Second week of Saanich school strike comes to a close

Students in Saanich are entering a 10th straight day of missing classes, as the union representing school support workers continue to strike over wages.

The school district says they offered the union a 7 to 12 percent raise, but CUPE president Dean Coates says it's not enough. Saanich Board of Education's Elsie McMurphy says they can't offer the union any more money.

It doesn't look like kids will be in school soon, as both sides say there are no plans to get back to the bargaining table.

A new survey conducted for staffing firm Robert Half suggests more than one-third of Canadian workers say their commute is stressful.

Commute times average 53 minutes per day, and the number of respondents saying it's causing them stress is up from similar surveys taken in previous years.

To stop the flow of people from East Germany into the west, the East German government under the authority of the Soviet Union, began to build the Berlin Wall in the overnight hours of August 1961. Niki Reitmayer looked back on this moment in history with those who were there.
