Justin Trudeau is promising to ban all military-style assault rifles as part of a broader gun-control plan that will also take steps towards restricting and banning handguns. The Liberals also pledge to work with provinces and territories to empower municipalities to further restrict or ban handguns.

How did the Asian giant hornets come to Nanaimo?

The Ministry of Agriculture says it will preserve the bodies invasive hornets found in a nest in Nanaimo, to try and determine where they came from.

The underground nest of invasive Asian giant hornets was discovered and destroyed Wednesday night after the first three insects were found in the area last month.

The giant hornets can be up to five centimetres long with a wingspan of seven centimetres and while stings are rare, the government statement says if a person is stung multiple times there is a risk of toxic or allergic reaction.

The hornets, which are common in parts of China, Korea and Japan, feed on insects and are capable of destroying a honeybee hive in a short period of time.

Justin Trudeau is in Toronto, hoping to take back control of his re-election campaign after spending yesterday apologizing for donning blackface when he was younger.  Today, the Liberal leader said he will speak personally with one of his opponents, NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, about the blackface images that came to light this week. Singh says he's willing to hear Trudeau out.

The world's press wasted no time pouncing on three separate instances in the 1990s and 2000s where Trudeau acknowledged he committed the racist act of painting his face and hands black or brown for various costume events.

There were headlines around the globe, Trudeau was the butt of late-night comic jokes in the U-S last night and even US President Donald Trump weighed in, saying he was very surprised to see the photos.
