In the spirit of A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series, The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters will captivate middle-grade listeners looking for humor, hijinks, and a swashbuckling good time. Meet Jaundice and Kale Bland, two sisters who avoid excitement at any cost. Together, they patiently await the return of their parents, who left on an errand years ago and have never returned. One day, the Bland sisters are kidnapped by an all-female band of pirates. They're unwillingly swept into a high-seas romp that might just lead to solving the mystery of what happened to their parents. With Roald Dahl-esque wit, this new series is for listeners who are looking for an anything-but-bland adventure.
Critic Reviews:
"Each pirate's unique voice adds to the atmosphere. Fatima, the cook, is especially well developed as she displays emotions ranging from meanness to hurt feelings to friendliness - -with a fine singing voice to boot! Arghh, matey, 'tis real treasure." (

Absolutely perfect for my 9 year old grandaughter ...
It arrived two days ago and my 9 year-old granddaughter has already read it! She quoted parts of it, delighted in some new vocabulary, and just couldn't put it down. I don't think I've ever seen her quite so excited by a book. Clearly a hit. Her mother, babysitter, and I are all "fighting" over who gets to read it next. My granddaughter is hoping the author will write at least four books a year!
Such a great book!
This book is anything but bland! A great read that enthralled my 9 and 6 year old girls to the very end, I highly recommend it!
The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters: The Jolly Regina
I always appreciate the opportunity to read advanced copies of middle grade novels because I have three girls in elementary school. We read the books together, and their feedback helps me with my book reviews.
The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters: The Jolly Regina is the first book in a new series by Kara LaReau. Jaundice and Kale Bland live by themselves. Their parents left on an errand several years ago, and never returned. This does not bother Jaundice and Kale; they are perfectly content to sit at home, darn socks, and eat cheese sandwiches. If there is a question that they canât answer, they consult their beloved childrenâs dictionary. Their lives are simple and predictable. But one day, a mysterious visitor arrives, and Jaundice and Kale are carried off (quite literally) on an unintentional adventure featuring a ferocious crew of female pirates. Along the way, they will make friends, and more importantly, they will learn that they are intelligent and capable.
My girls loved this book so much. They laughed and laughed at the antics; the humor is quirky and witty and this is just such a delightful book. The girls always asked for one more chapter- even if we had already read two or more chapters already!
Speaking of which, each of the chapters begins with a new vocabulary word that ends up being featured in the chapter. Some of the words are: vehemence, scrimshaw, saboteurs, and incinerator. I thought this was a cute touch that went along with the sistersâ penchant for looking things up in the dictionary.
