    Publisher's Summary:
Alice-Miranda is in bustling New York City. It's a blur of skyscrapers, hot dog carts, chats with zoo animals and classes at Mrs Kimmel's School for Girls, right next to glorious Central Park. Her family's glamorous department store, Highton's on Fifth, has just been renovated, but plans for the fabulous reopening party are going curiously wrong. Is that why Alice-Miranda's father, Hugh, seems so worried? And why is her new friend, Lucinda, so shy about inviting Alice-Miranda home?
Jacqueline Harvey is an award-winning, best-selling children's author from Australia. A former teacher and Deputy Headmistress, she writes the very popular Alice-Miranda books and has recently launched a spin-off series about a lovely little girl called Clementine Rose.
Jacqueline is travelling in the UK and Singapore in early 2013, introducing Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose and having a wonderful time meeting children and visiting schools. She likes to write her books with a view - preferably of the ocean, but she is not averse to the countryside either.

    Excellent again.
Another fun filled story. I love all the characters and all the wonderful descriptions. I rdally there were more on audible.
    Excruciating
My nine year old daughter enjoyed this but I thought the narration was excruciating and find Alice Miranda to be an annoying character.
    Brilliant
Love the character voices. Great, captivating story. Couldn't wait to discover how the mysteries came together.

    Release date: 02-05-16
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Marianne is no child prodigy at drawing. Confined to her bed with an illness, she finds a pencil in her great-grandmother's workbox, but the house she draws is as unsatisfying as always - like a shaky doll's house with grass as unlike anything growing as ever.
But that night she dreams and rediscovers her drawing in a completely new world. Returning to this world night after night, Marianne encounters a strange but familiar boy, and the house takes on an increasingly ominous significance for both of them....
Funny, unusual, indefinable, the spirit of Marianne Dreams lingers long after the final sentence.
Catherine Storr was born and lived most of her life in London. She practised medicine for 15 years but never forgot her ambition to be a writer. She wrote her first children's books for her three daughters, and many went on to become classics. Marianne Dreams was made into a film, The Paper House, in 1990.

No violence but a wee bit scary!
I found a wonderful show on YouTube called "Escape Into Night" - a six-part, 30-minute per part "children's" show made by ATV/ITV in the UK back in the early 1970s. I loved it so much I bought the DVD! Then, wanting to read the book upon which the show was based, I bought the book. It's a nice read - a wonderful fantasy about a young girl whose dreams "come to life" while she is confined to bed, recovering from an illness. I actually bought the book for my nephew. I did a bit of research and discovered it was recommended for 6th grade (US) and up. My nephew is entering the 3rd grade but I think he's up to it. If you miss the days of thoughtful, intelligent children's literature, you'll enjoy it - regardless of your age.
I recommend you read the book first. Then, watch the UK television series. Do not waste your time with the theatrical film. I haven't seen it but from what I have read, it is nothing like the book!
    An overlooked classic
Marianne Dreams is a story of a young girl facing a long convalescence, who fills her time by doodling in a writing pad. One day she picks up a pencil that looks different from the others. She discovers that whatever she draws with this pencil turns up in her dreams that night. She finds a world in which she is drawn out of herself and her own problems and into the life of another person, also coalescing from long illness. In this alternate--and yet real--world Marianne learns about commitment and selflessness. The story is engaging, compelling, eerie, and deeply satisfying. C. S. Lewis said that a good children's book is worth reading after you've grown up, or it probably wasn't a very good children's book to start with. Catherine Storr has proven Lewis right with this one. A 12 year-old can read and enjoy it, but so can a 58 year old, or a 98 year old.
found it a good read. I say "surprise
This book deserves to be a classic. I first came across it as I was entering "senior citizenship" and, to my surprise, found it a good read. I say "surprise," because when it comes to modern books for children, which I have to read because of my job, I am very hard to please.

    Publisher's Summary:
Experience the breadth and depth of Paul Laurence Dunbar's poetry - and learn how it reflects his singular life as a late-nineteenth-century black man.
Did you know that Paul Laurence Dunbar originated such famous lines as "I know why the caged bird sings" and "We wear the mask that grins and lies"? From his childhood in poverty and his early promise as a poet through his struggles to find acceptance as a writer and his tumultuous romance with his wife, to his immense fame and his untimely death, Dunbar's story is one of triumph and tragedy. But his legacy remains in his much-beloved poetry - told in both Standard English and in dialect - which continues to delight and inspire readers today. More than two dozen of Dunbar's poems are woven throughout this volume, illuminating the phases of his life and serving as examples of dialect, imagery, and tone. Narrating in a voice full of admiration and respect, Sally Derby introduces Paul Laurence Dunbar's life and poetry to listeners young and old.

    Five Stars
I loved this audio book. The narration is great. I liked that they used two different people to rad this--a female voice for the author's narration, and a male voice for Dunbar's poem. It felt like my grandma was telling me a story about Dunbar, and that Dunbar was reading the poem to me. I had no idea Dunbar wrote the famous phrase "I know why the caged bird sings," and I especially like his poem "The Haunted Oak."
    Five Stars
    wonderful and informative
    Five Stars
Excellent condition! The poems are a bit more advanced than I'd hoped for, but will "grow" into them.
A Poet and His Poetry Beautifully Intertwined
From the first sentence of this concise, lyrical biography a grandmotherly narrator takes the reader firmly by the hand: âYou never heard of the poet Paul Laurence Dunbar? Child, whereâve you been? I got to have a word with you.â The âwordâ flows into the spellbinding story of a black poet, born in Dayton, Ohio in 1872, the son of two former slaves. He impressed his teachers and his all-white classmates by getting two poems published at the age of 16 only to hit the color wall upon high school graduation: the same newspaper that had accepted his poems refused to hire a negro. So the talented Paul Laurence Dunbar took a job that was open to a colored man of his day: he became an elevator operator. âI know why the caged bird sings, ah me,â he later wrote in one of his poems. Those two pieces of himself - the singing piece and the caged piece - battled inside him throughout his brief 33-year life. Teachers will find a historical goldmine here - from the post-Civil-War shadow of slavery to the shame of Jim Crow to the various ways blacks have found, through the years, of living and speaking their blackness in a hostile world. Dunbarâs poems, some in dialect, some in formal English, are perfectly placed throughout the story to illuminate and be illuminated by the events of his life. They beg to be âperformed,â read aloud at full throat for their sheer sound and sadness and celebration. Folksy acrylic and pencil illustrations are icing on the cake. This is nonfiction storytelling at its very best.

    Merry Christmas every block
Personally I thought this was a great book and could tell people a lot about minecraft however the pictures aren't as good as a lot of other books and was a little bit too game like with all the codes and stuff but this is one of the best and most original minecraft books I've read.4 stars
    Short but sweet
I have this book four stars because it was way to short and had only two chapters. I recommend this to all minecraft fans and players but highly advise for people who like long books with a lot of chapters to NOT get this book. Overall, very good book.
    Awesome For Kids!!

    Love this cat
This is the second in the trilogy and I could not wait to finish it. Also am anxious for the third installment. Hoping that the same person, Kenny James, narrates. He does a really amazing job of bringing the characters to life. Does not overly dramatize the voices. Really quite good with the narration. I recommend this trilogy to anyone who loves a good story and knows a little something about cats. The author must as he brings the mystery that is cat to life.

    Fascination goes beyond cover love
Lately, Iâve found myself drawn more and more to middle-grade fiction. Thereâs a magic to it that gets lost in trendy YA. Thatâs not to say that Iâve given up on YA, itâs just harder to find the magic. My latest magical find is âThe Girl with the Glass Bird,â by Esme Kerr.
I wanted to read âThe Girl with the Glass Birdâ the minute it arrived. Cover love! I could tell there was something magical to it, and I wasnât disappointed.
âThe Girl with the Glass Birdâ is like stepping back in time but holding on to the context of today. The juxtaposition of cell phones mixed with old-timey school rules helps make the book accessible. It also helps show you donât need technology to unravel a mystery.
Author Esme Kerrâs writing is accessible and her pacing is strong, although the book does wane in a few places. Esme descriptions are strong enough to allow the reader to place themselves at Knightâs Haddon School, but theyâre also loose enough to allow the reader to develop their own sense of place. Itâs a balancing act she performs exceptionally well.
âThe Girl with the Glass Doorâsâ plot isnât exceptionally complicated â I did figure things out fairly early on. However, this book is geared toward 8-12-year-olds, so I wouldnât expect much more on this front. Overall, itâs a charming book worth reading more than once. Iâm looking forward to the next book in this new series.
    British boarding school mystery
I was drawn to the cover and I like a good British boarding school read, so I gave this a shot. It was not bad and the plot was well crafted, but ultimately the characters didn't spark to life for me. I did get caught up in the mystery by the end and found the ending satisfying, so that is good, but there were too many times up till then that I felt tempted to put this down. If the students or teachers had been more captivating or likable, and if there had been a bit more lightness or fun, I would have liked it better.
    Five Stars
    I really enjoyed this book

Would you listen to Jeff Madison and the Shimmers of Drakmere again? Why?
Jeff Madison and the Shimmers of Drakmere is an unpredictable and exciting adventure, packed with mystery and suspense.
