Silly and sillier

Would you try another book written by R.S. Pateman or narrated by Penelope Rawlins?

Sadly, no...

What could R.S. Pateman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Ummmmm, I am afraid it just got sillier and sillier. I would have preferred more focus on the land and the folk lore More Alan Garner less hammer horror? Also the perspective from which it was written was infuriating.

What character would you cut from The Prophecy of Bees?

The protagonist I am afraid

Any additional comments?

For some reason in my head I had decided it was going to be an interesting mix of The Owl Service and The Wasp Factory, sadly, this was not the case.

weird and boring

tried twice, finished the second time and wasn't worth it . main character annoying and sillu story about witch craft.

It wasn't as bad as the other reviews say....

Where does The Prophecy of Bees rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It wasn't the best piece of literature I have ever read - but equally, not the worst either! I wasn't expecting much as the other reviews were quite disparaging about this book, but I have listened to Mr Pateman's first book, so i decided to find out for myself. Glad I did. Personally, I think they area little harsh... Its a nice little story, that isn't unpredictable, but isn't bad either! It's a little rushed in places and some things could have dpne with a little more explanation, but it was good!

What about Penelope Rawlinss performance did you like?

Some of her accents were a little "testing" at times, but overall, not too bad. Some other reviews were very unfair on her I feel.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I think so. Ilistened to it over the course of 1 day.

Any additional comments?

Give it a go! If you enjoyed his first book, what do you have to lose? You can always get a refund if you hate it!! Try it. You never know, you may enjoy it too!

Am Overdone Dish

I think that you need a light hand when writing a book of this sort, but this writer used a hammer and mallet instead. Hardly a literary device was left out: black dogs, hidden skeletons, ancient books written in code, stone circles, midsummer nights, wraiths .... the list goes on and on. I felt no sympathy with any of the characters. In the end the only one I felt sorry for was the dog. The ending was also unsatisfactory. I know it's perhaps old fashioned but I do like some sort of change or resolution.

The reader was good.

Addicts who have hit bottom know how terrifying the road back up appears. Private detective Charlie Street got off the booze years ago, but hes plateaued on an addiction that he finds both shameful and irresistible: sex. A beating that could have killed him leads him to partner with a crazy-violent bar-brawler, who turns out to be the son of a woman Charlie had a crush on when he was a teen-ager. Back then, he thought she was "the one." Can she help him recover his lost happiness? Or is that just another addicts escape fantasy? For an addict, giving up the drug of choice may be just the beginning, and finding true freedom may be more terrifying than giving up the booze.

Members Reviews:

inspirational fiction relating to issues of addict

Charlie Street, a private investigator in his sixties, is a recovering alcoholic, who has lost his family after a divorce and who now substitutes his alcohol addiction with sex. Charlie uses women, among them Viv, who has been supporting him through his alcohol-fueled days and has stayed by his side for years. But as a bit on the side, Charlie sees a married woman and then also becomes reacquainted with a crush from his youth. Charlie wants to solve a cold case in order to get some money to be able to retire. He is a deeply troubled guy who is just scraping by day by day trying to keep his addictions under control.

While there are bad guys, some fighting and some investigating, A Thousand Times is not really a murder mystery or crime story as such. That part of the story is more an accessory that provides the setting. The book is more about Charlie examining his life. It's about Charlie's Christian faith, about redemption, changing his ways and discovering what has been right in front of him. Written in the first person, the writing flowed nicely and was very engaging. Parts of it made me think I was listening to someone's memoir, and that feeling was underlined by the narration.

The narration is provided by Lane Wray, the author's son. He is an actor, but this is his first audio book narration, and it was a very good performance. For most parts, it felt as if I was sitting cozily opposite Charlie and was being told his story. I felt the narrator really managed to capture the protagonist's struggles. He also used a variety of voices and styles for the different characters. My only criticism would be that a couple of the voices felt as if someone was screaming at me.

While I wouldn't recommend it as a mystery or crime story, I would definitely commend this if you are interested in general, inspirational fiction relating to issues of addiction and redemption. I was actually quite surprised that there weren't more reviews of this book around. It has a feeling of authenticity, and the author, Billy Wray, has obviously an intricate understanding of the subject. And call me sentimental, but I love the fact that a son has brought his father's self-published book to life on audio, so it deserves to be heard.

Audiobook provided for review by the narrator.

Es zeichnet Rönkäs Romane aus, dass sie virtuos mit einem Klima der Angst spielen, die Bedrohungsszenarien aber nicht zwanghaft in Gewaltexzesse münden!
