Title: The Spoken Word

Subtitle: A Moroni Traveler Novel

Author: Robert R. Irvine

Length: 4 hrs and 55 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-10-14

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense

Publisher's Summary:

"How many times have I told you? Never get involved with the church hierarchy."

Words of wisdom, surely, but Moroni Traveler can't seem to take his father's advice. Salt Lake City private investigators, Moroni and his father, Martin, maintain an uneasy truce with the Church of Latter-day Saints. But Moroni owes a debt to his boyhood friend Willis Tanner, now one of the top-ranking officials in the LDS, and Willis has come to collect. Lael Woolley, grandniece of the First Prophet, the head of the Mormon church on earth, has been kidnapped, and the prophet believes only Traveler, a Gentile, can rescue her. Moroni agrees, although reluctantly - in Salt Lake City you just don't say no to the LDS. He and his father set out to find Lael with carte blanche from the prophet and the assistance of three enterprising, offbeat drifters who live in the lobby of the Travelers' office building. Their search takes them around the state and into the church's extensive genealogical records, pointing to a subversive Mormon feminist group that may or may not be responsible for Lael's disappearance.

Publisher: Audible Studios

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense

A tour de force of suspense, Shock Wave is the tense tale of a female reporter who, on assignment in a midwestern university town, finds she has stepped into an environment fused for violence.

After two decades of covering riots, assassinations, and urban decay, Kate Osborn comes to Venice, Illinois, to profile Steve Higgins, an old-school Chicago-style politician. Although Higgins hews to tradition, the problems in Venice are thoroughly modern. Student unrest roils beneath the quiet surface of the university, kept in check only by the well-armed campus police, and in town, the white merchants and black coal miners are preparing to go to war. It takes all of Higgins' strength to keep the town in check - but two shocking murders tip the balance. Kate came to interview a politician, but she is about to get a firsthand look at a war zone right in the middle of America's heartland.

Title: Desert Town

Author: Ramona Stewart

Narrator: Michael Bower

Format: Unabridged

Length: 6 hrs and 32 mins

Language: English

Release date: 12-05-14

Publisher: Raven's Head Press

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense

Publisher's Summary:

Desert Town is dark crime fiction for those who have a taste for the perverse and violent. It was made into a major film, Desert Fury, starring Burt Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott and Mary Astor. Its the story of seventeen year old Paula Hallers transition into womanhood as she defies her mother, Fritzis dominance. Fritzi runs the small town of Chuckawalla including the Purple Sage casino and saloon as well as a bordello or two. Fritzi can control everything but Paula and the tension between the two is drawn as tight as a drum. The scenery includes sprawling ranches, a very much out of place colonial mansion and the vast beauty of the desert. Mix in a notorious gangster, his insanely jealous torpedo, a love triangle, the town sheriff, some weirdly eccentric characters and innuendo aplenty. Once the sun brings all these ingredients to a boil youve got the backdrop for a noir setting like no other.

A Classic Crime Noir Rediscovered

Raven's head Press has brought this great Crime Noir Novel from 1947 back to press. I assume that the cover is new. If so the have done a great job when they commissioined the art. It follows the story and adds to the Noir feel.

I bought this book blind after seeing the art and description on a Pulp website. I thought is resembled a Hard Case Crime Book. If that is the type of story you are looking for I don't think you will be disappointed.

The story follows Paula Haller a 17 year old young woman who lives with her dominating strong mother who runs the the local town saloon. casino and brothel. Sheltered from her Mom's business Paula is a lonely woman who is friends only with adults. Things take a very Noir twist when Paula gets involved with a drifting pair of criminals. One man loves her and one man hates her. We have a past murder to solve involving a woman who looked quite a bit like Paula.

Author Romana Stewart writes a nice fast paced set of Hard Boiled prose telling an engaging story. Unfortunately she did not stay in this style of writing which she has a flair for but ventured in to realm of the Occult fiction. J. F. Norris does a very good introduction for the book following the authors career.

The book was made into a Full Color Film Noir movie called DESERT FURY, starring Burt Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott and Mary Astor. The movie is currently not available on DVD but is available in it's entirety on U-Tube. The movie is also recommended.

The book and packaging are very good and I would give it Five Stars. Raven's head Press is a small Print On Demand company (this is their 2nd book) the first edition of this book had way too many typos for me to give it the five stars but the publisher has informed me that has been corrected and so has my review.

Highly Recommended.

Friends to die for

I enjoyed this book & didn't really want it to end.

My most memorable moment was finding out who the killer was ... I didn't see that coming.

I have a lot of books read by Annie & enjoy listening to her.

Narrator

Good story but narrator not the best - reminiscent of Catherine Tate's 'Nan' at times. Think a male would have been better.

Gripping

Easy but addictive listen with good story line. Reader was pleasant to listen to and easy to understand. Would recommend

Good old Whodunnit!

A disparate group of ten acquaintances have a Sunday dinner club arrangement. They like to play games in the truth or dare tradition. One fatal Sunday each one must reveal a life-changing moment from their past. Little do they know that this moment will lead to another life-changing moment for them all but with sinister results.

Although you might feel these people would never actually be friends in real life the story gets going at a cracking pace so your suspension of disbelief is maintained very well.

This is a classic whodunnit in the manner of an Agatha Christie albeit far removed from her particular universe of retired colonels and genteel settings; here the action takes place in Central London. Just as you think you have guessed the murderer your suspect is cleared or dies! The reader does an excellent job and is really pleasant to listen to.

This was an off-chance buy for me and I don't regret it for an instant.

Brilliant book

Loved this ! Annie was brilliant as always . Couldn't stop listening! Kept me wondering. Brilliant will download another :))) sad it ended .
