    Publisher's Summary:
Follow the adventures of a Dueber Hampden wristwatch from its original owner, a physician living in New York City in 1923, across generations to a young college woman in Saudi Arabia in 2004. This is a collection of novellas originally appearing in the novel, Alexios, Before Dying: Velia and the Magician, Kimi and the Shaman, and Leta and the Sufi.
    Members Reviews:
    Well written metaphysical fantasy
The Lives of Alexios by Chance Maree is a collection of novellas previously published in another variation (see book description): Velia and the Magician, Kimi and the Shaman, and Leta and the Sufi. The link between these stories is a wristwatch and its owners â beginning the watchâs journey in New York City in 1923 and continuing to Saudi Arabia in 2004.
Quick summary: Veila and the Magician meet after the Magician witnesses Veila (a young black girl with the power to know things others donât) harassed by boys on the street and then get hit by a car. He is the first on the scene and they become close friends.
Kimi and the Shaman: Kimi learns that she has terminal cancer at the time she is wife, stepmother and caretaker to a child who will be wheelchair bound for his entire life. As a result of her diagnosis, she makes the dramatic choice to follow a Shaman in Mexico, which leads to many adventures/misadventures.
Leta and the Sufi: Leta is a beautiful young woman visiting historical religious sites in the Middle East where she becomes interested in a young man who doesnât reciprocate her feelings. The Sufi is a spiritual guide. Leta believes that objects (rocks in particular) hold the memories of incidents they witnessed and that it may be possible for people to interpret these memories.
While these are separate stories, there are links between them (not concretely). The author takes a generous metaphysical approach to how the stories of these characters hold meaning and is quite playful at points throughout. The prose is excellent and powerful. The overall concept for these novellas was creative and unique. I enjoyed the fantasy aspect and the spiritual threads that wove through the stories. Overall, this is an excellent collection â well written, powerful, and resonant metaphysical fantasy.

    Title: Unmanned
    Author: Dan Fesperman
    Narrator: Armand Schultz
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 12 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-01-15
    Publisher: Jammer Audio
    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
As an F-16 fighter pilot, Darwin Cole was a family man on top of his world. Now he's a washout, drunk and alone, haunted by the memory of an Afghan child running for her life from the Predator drone he 'piloted. Reluctantly, Cole teams up with three journalists seeking to discover the identity of the anonymous intelligence operative who called the shots in that ill-fated mission.
    Critic Reviews:
"An utterly compelling thriller and quite simply the best" (The Sunday Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
    ...disappointing... again...
I have read all of Fesperman's books. Unfortunately, like many authors, his writing seems to be declining in quality. The plot, the characters, the setting - all seemed trite, banal and shallow. I felt no empathy for any of the protagonists; and although many plots are often "predictable", and this does not detract from the book, this one was mindlessly predictable. I really lost interest in the book, and, much to my consternation, subsequently skimmed the last third of the book (without losing much of anything).
I am saddened that his last several books have been so disappointing, as some of his earlier books were amazing. His next book needs to hit some high points, otherwise he risks falling into the " James Patterson " book mill category.
    Gripping from the get go!
A cracker! Captain Darwin Cole, top-gun fighter pilot transferred to flying Predator drones, begins to be sickened by what he sees and does. Especially when some of his missions go badly - and inexplicably - wrong. He drops out, and teams up with three journalists to try to uncover who's screwing whom and how.
Drones: a hot topic - what they do, and some of the truly frightening things they almost certainly will soon be able to do. The FBI and CIA: behaving badly, but then true-grit Americans don't like the Feds - though the US Army also seems to have its share of rotten apples. Small Band takes on Huge Behemoth: David meets Goliath in cyberspace. This book has lots going for it, and then some.
What makes it so readable? Sheer storytelling, to begin with. A great story, with lots of convincing twists and turns. Good cyberwar procedurals. The pace is cracking, the dialogue taut, the scene-setting brisk and minimal.
And the characterisation is excellent; no cardboard cut-outs, everyone is 3.5 dimensional, same as in real life. The goodies who turn out to be baddies recognise the fact that they are harming others, the baddies who become goodies are never Simon pure.
So what's not to like? Well, it's a pretty standard thriller line: small guys go up against dirty-tricks big guys, slowly uncover leads, get a couple of breaks, arrive at the grand finale. But so what, Shakespeare copied other people's plots, and he seems to be doing pretty good.
    Drones are here to stay
The book portrays the drama behind piloting a drone from a remote site. The pilot is even more removed from the action then in flying a plane. The consequences are more removed. A lot of collateral damage is possible. This book describes the effects that killing innocent civilians and children can have on the victims and those operating the drones. More than that the people from above giving the orders can be anonymous like on a chat line. Who gave the orders that caused the collateral damage? Will they take responsibility? Or is it on the pilot? That is the central theme of this story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Is the brutal assassination in Hong Kong of a respected Marine Insurance executive, carried out days after a violent assault by sinister forces on his family, merely a coincidence - or part of a covert plan running out of control? With a senior and well connected member of the Chinese Mafia taking an interest, someone is now determined to find out! Why has an aerial engagement between super fast fighter jets, high above the disputed territories of the Persian Gulf signalled an early end to the life of a top level government official in Tehran? Perhaps only the head of the notorious Iranian Rev Guard could answer that particularly interesting question.
Scheme 112/406, also known as The Geneveh Project, is at the heart of it all, driven by the greed of one single man. With the American CIA determined to scupper the whole plan and the British SIS sitting on the sidelines, the second most powerful man in Iran puts pressure on the cavalier English oilfield entrepreneur to finish the work on time, quoting an ancient Persian saying; He who wants a rose must respect the thorn The warning is clear the consequences of failure - life threatening!
The stakes are running high, as is the escalating price for finishing the complex, delicate works in the middle of a front line war zone, forcing the cunning millionaire industrialist to do a deal with a dubious anglophile Iraqi Air Force General, who has the power to destroy the ambitions of all concerned at the press of a button! When the final confrontation arrives, it is unexpected, forcing the SIS to come out of the shadows and act, leaving the senior covert CIA Middle East operative impotent; merely a bystander in an event that is to eventually take many lives and send shockwaves around the world! So, will the possibly over confident oilfield tycoon succeed in the gamble of his life? The head of the Iranian Rev Guard has put the Englishmans life on it! The CIA have put a billion dollar submarine on it!

    A Wonderful surprise!
Having spent some time in the Mid East during the timing of this novel I bought it just out of interest. What a WONDEFUL SURPRISE!!! I could not put this book down. The detail was so accurate and the story line was fast moving and exciting. I have no doubt that Quentin Cope will soon be in the library of action book readers. Quentin's work reminds me of Jack Higgins or even early Ken Follett.
He who wants a rose must respect the thorn. Ancient Persian proverb.
Such a precarious situation. Middle East volatility and American aggression, protecting their own interests.
Many of the events are based on fact and Cope has created a fast-moving, tense, political thriller that exposes megalomania, corruption and greed on a damning scale with devastating results. No winners, just losers.
The stakes are high. This is about oil in the Gulf.

    Part six of ten
Cruelty and Regret are loose and causing all sorts of mayhem and destruction.
This is a serialized novel. That means the really big story is broken up into smaller parts, in this case, ten parts. So you do need to have read parts one through five before reading this installment and then you will need to read parts seven through ten to finish the story. There is strong language and violence throughout all of the parts so far. Those are you warnings. If you just can't stand serials though, the book is going to be put out as two omnibus editions. Omnibus one contains parts one through five and is already out. Omnibus two with parts two through ten will be released after all the parts have been released.
If you got past the warnings, then you will probably not have a problem with this ongoing story. Personally, I enjoy the smaller segments. It helps to break up the reading of a long story. It is like watching a TV series. Sometimes, I just don't have the time to watch an entire season in one sitting. Also, it gives me something to look forward to reading. The other good thing about serialized novels is that you can usually try them fairly cheaply and see if you like them before getting too invested.
This story is full of action, great characters, and supernatural suspense. It is well worth following.
4 Regrets Cruelly Forgotten for Cruelty: Episode Six
Disclaimer: I follow E. Lorn on Goodreads. He and I follow each other's blogs on Booklikes. We've never exchanged more than a few polite words on either platform. If you think that colours this review, then click away now ...
Edward Lorn's serial novel continues in exciting fashion with Episode Six, with some backstory to the supernatural antagonists being fleshed out, and a couple of other dramatic developments that will leave fans aching for more from the series.
To be honest, I was a little on the fence regarding the five episodes in the first collection I read last year. I even opted not to give it a grade, because I wanted to see how it all played out.
Having now returned to reading in episodic format, I feel more confident in saying this is shaping to be an excellent serialised novel. And more than that, much like Stephen King did with The Green Mile, I think Lorn has managed to hit on the head what works for serialised fiction. Especially since it's all I can do not to go scrambling for Episode Seven right now. But then I must be patient as at the time of this reviewing, there's still two episodes to complete Cruelty's final act.
If you haven't yet got around to it, get on to this - just pace yourself appropriately. Because none of us want to end up calling for E. Lorn's blood in the same way half the reading world does for one George R. R. Martin's.
