Title: The Lost Diary of Don Juan
    Author: Douglas Carlton Abrams
    Narrator: Gordon Griffin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-28-11
    Publisher: Whole Story Audiobooks
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Evicted from the convent, he was taken under the wing of the libertine Don Pedro, the Marquis of Mota, who coached him in skills both courtly and amorous and then employed him as a spy at court. So began a life devoted to giving and receiving pleasure.
To Abrams' Don Juan is no playboy; instead Don Juan's mastery of the arts of passion liberates the women he meets. Through his connections with Don Pedro, he is made an 'hidalgo', an honorary nobleman, and is therefore protected from the wrath of the Inquisition by the King, but his position is precarious.
Then Don Juan embarks on the most perilous adventure of all - he falls in love, and finds that not only his reputation but also his life is in danger.

    Quality historical writing
Quick and easy read. Good character development and interesting and reasonably plausible plot. I'd say the historical details were fairly accurate, and I am a historian of the period. The Inaquisitor was a bit too typical, might have been able to make him less evil, but the author follows a long tradition of treating that institution one dimensionally. He might have been better off putting the story back even fifty years later for the development of some of the underlying philosophies.
    Good British translation
    Good translation! Good reading!
    SO Much Better than Byron!
I was so disappointed after reading Byron's Don Juan that I decided to read another book about Don Juan immediately. THIS is the Don Juan I was searching for. Abrams' characters are vibrant and seem to step right off the page and into reality.
Unlike most fictional works dealing with morals, the story itself is never weighed down by the heavy subject matter- even through its exploration of one of man's greatest moral challenges: the dichotomy of love and lust.
Because it DOES explore the many nuances of love and lust, AND is set at the height of the Inquisition, this book is not for everyone.
Don Juan is a skilled lover and a skilled swordsman. While much is left to the imagination in the description of his... swordplay, there are a few passages that some people might find a bit too graphic.
On the flip-side, the Inquisition has its own ways of... questioning its detainees. Some of these passages might prove too graphic for other people.
If you're looking for a great story, a moral challenge, and/or a "how to" book on the art of seduction, I highly recommend this book. If you're uncomfortable with sexuality in general, or uncomfortable with its tenuous relation to religion, you are unlikely to enjoy this particular work.
    The truth about Love
Doug Abrams knows how to love a woman, and he weaves this precious
knowledge throughout a beautifully written novel, filled with God, with Goddess and with Spirit, who is alive and well in all those delicious details.
A lifetime of reading has made me a sensitive and discerning 'enjoyer of books'. My passion for love and loving is fanned by reading the words of a man who caresses me with his prose and insight. This book should be required for every boy coming of age. Teach them early, I would pray!
Caroline Muir, co-author, TANTRA, THE ART OF CONSCIOUS LOVING,
and Founder of the DIVINE FEMININE INSTITUTE <[...]>
    Not just a "chic-flick" book
This book is excellent. Tastefully written - no smut but lots of
    intrigue.

    Disappointing
What would have made Rescue better?
This story was way too slow and I was hooked in by the characters at all.
What was most disappointing about Anita Shreves story?
If you are looking for entertainment like 'The Pilot's Wife' in this book, you will be sorely disappointed. I love 'The Pilot's Wife,' and rate it one of my all time favourites. The characters in 'Rescue' are blandly constructed and the storyline just never takes off. Webster, the central character, is flat and is difficult to connect with. Basically, it's a bit of a love story without the endearing characters.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
    Narrator was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Rescue?
    All of them.
    Any additional comments?
Don't waste your credits or time.
    Couldn't switch the 'off' button
Would you listen to Rescue again? Why?
I loved this book. It took me a couple of chapters to embrace the accents of the characters but I'm Australian! Once I was hooked I just wanted to listen to the whole book and had to strictly limit my listening time as I was on holidays and didn't want to finish too quickly!
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the characters and just thought the story was a bit different!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I thought the voice narration was irritating at first but after chapter 2 I really loved them!
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    It did make me cry
    Any additional comments?
    Would definitely recommend
    Disappointing
I have enjoyed Anita Shreve's books but found this one to be predictable and with nothing new to say. It was not helped by a poor performance by the reader. She is unable to do male voices, so compensates but shouting whenever a male character is speaking.
    A very addictive read.
This is a very good read, the story line a little pretictive but so endearing.

    Enjoyed this book
I enjoyed this book so much so that once I started reading it I didn't put it down for 2 days I found myself bringing the book to the table and reading it while I was eating I rarely if ever do that but this is a well written book and just when I thought I could put the book down for a bit something else surprising happened and I had to keep reading. Of course, being a freethinker might have made me more interested in the outcome and the dialog but the main story was excellent on it's own. It doesn't surprise me that they made this into a movie.
    Salvation Boulevard
Really enjoyed his book, The Librarian which I rate 4.5 stars, but whilst this was reasonably enjoyable
    not a must read .
    Bad Guys
I wanted to like this book . . . it is an interesting, thoughtful premise. But the plot wobbled all over the place, the initial plot mechanic got lost . . .and I didn't like the protagonist . . .and most of the other characters. It will be interesting to see what he projected movie does with this unfortunate mish-mash . . . RHB
Few surprises, an annoying loose end
First, I must acknowledge that I've never had any contact with evangelical Christians. So I can't judge whether the author's portrayal of their beliefs is accurate and fair. I intend to check out the discussion he encouraged at his website, but I haven't found time to do it yet.
Given that...in a story of murder and mayhem, I hope for surprises. Here, I was only truly surprised by one plot development, which takes place less than midway through the book. I'm not saying I anticipated all the specifics. But the characters I expected (from the way they'd been portrayed all along) to be guilty of wrongdoing were in fact guilty of wrongdoing.
Early on, we're told a minor character has insisted on something's being worded in a certain way, rejecting another possibility. I kept waiting for that to have some plot relevance, but it never does.
Finally, while I can understand the author's wanting to end the story the way he did, the denouement was too long and dragged-out for my taste.
    BEINHART READERS, REJOICE!
You probably won't find Larry Beinhart signing copies of his new novel, SALVATION BOULEVARD, at a mega-church near you.

Took Two Tries To Finish This Book
I started this book twice. The narrator is a bad choice. Luckily, this was a $2.95 book or I would have felt like I wasted my money. The book was only fair. Considering that the male lead only spoke about 100 words the entire book, it just wasn't that interesting. Then add a narrator that sounds as if she is reading a book word for word, and it was a chore to finish.
Listen to a sample first to see if you can stand the narrator, and if you can, then it might be an okay book for the money.
    oh please!!
This book was incredibly unrealistic to the point of nauseum...A beautiful A-List actress gives up her cushy life in LA to move back to a one horse town in texas (that the good people of the other parts of texas probably wouldn't even want to live in) because she had an accident that left a scar on her face that's barely recognizable and hooks up with a cowboy (very stereotypical) that's barely even in the book to have a happily ever after living on a farm milking cows and raising chickens...YEAH RIGHT!!! lol

    Wimped Out!
The story started out really well. Lots of mayhem, then with a phone call the bad guy is put out of business. Wimpy!! Such a disappointment. Come on this story had cowboys, the least we could have had was a couple of fisticuffs. Yup not even one lil throw down. Rather boring.

    A little boring...
this was a short listen and I'm glad because it was kind of boring. I won't say it was a waste of money because I paid less than $2.00 for it. It was a typical "insecure plain jane getting the hot guy in town" story which I'm not particularly a fan of..i'm glad I paid so little for it but it should be free.

    Engaging but not thrilling lifestory
An engaging life story of Han Olafson, which intertwines the burdens of his early life in Sweden, with those of his later life in Africa. From this author I expected more of a thriller, but it is not that sort of book. Engaging, but not thrilling, and not one I would listen to again. As ever superb narration by Saul Reichlin.
immerses one in the heat and fear
a totally different tack to Wallander, great narrative excellent tension and heat.
