just like the first volume of the trilogy

Extremely intense, just like the first volume of the trilogy, "A Star Called Henry," which I read and enjoyed, which is why I purchased the second volume. On the one hand, the story is entirely unbelievable, but the verve with which it is told carries you along. The hero, Henry Smart, is kind of a mythological figure who emerges alive, if not unscathed, from very close calls. He becomes Louis Armstrong's pet white man in the middle of the book, which explains its title. Doyle writes vividly, with a good bit of humor. His evocation of the poverty and displacement of the American Depression is more convincing than a lot of Henry Smart's adventures, and a useful reminder of the way things were for quite a few years. If you read the first volume, I don't see how you can resist going on to the second. I'm already on the third!

I love Roddy Doyle

I love Roddy Doyle, and "Henry". But but but, this book was tough to get into and tough to stay with. It often rambled - and then jumped forward or back in time. Closer to stream of consciousness than the tight narrative of Doyle's other books. I'm glad I read it, but wish I had had to work so hard

Read A Star called Henry first!

Book two of the Henry Smart trilogy, as silly and far fetched a good story goes it just gets better!

Worth a read

This was an all-around good read, but not as great as "A Star Called Henry." Also, you have to have read the first book for much of the second to make sense. If you like Roddy Doyle it will still be an interesting read.

Too Cutsy

My first impression of this book was; it reminded me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in the sense of an unlikely detective solving a crime. It was probably with this thought that made me not enjoy this book as much as expected. While there is some very interesting concepts in this book; it has a very philosophical theme throughout of this book, I thought the author padded the book a little too much. While the sheep made for very interesting and enjoy about characters, I felt that they were the only part of the book that I actually enjoyed. In the end I just felt the book was too cutesy for my likely.

Wonderful, entertaining and charming

What other book might you compare Three Bags Full to, and why?

I like to change the pace of my listens, following a dark Jo Nesbo with an Agatha Raisin comic piece. It was in the expectation of Agatha type wit that I bought Three Bags Full.

But, Leonnie Swann's herd of detective sheep are in a league of their own, a creation of sensitive observation of animal behaviour and great imagination. Brilliant.

Which character as performed by Hugh Lee was your favourite?

Hugh Lee is rapidly rising to no. 1 spot in my personal 'best narrator' top ten. The characterization of each individual is thorough, distinctive and utterly convincing. This is a group (flock) piece, each character adding a particular spice to the mix, so it is not really fair to single out one. They all have a charm and appeal. The dialogue is brilliantly dramatised and articulated, and Hugh Lee's reading style in descriptive passages is easy and flowing. There is a sense of a lot of background and preparatory work before the recording being worn lightly in a confident, polished performance.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are lots of moments to note, but saying anything here risks me writing spoilers that would undermine the narrativeand plot...

Utterly sublime

Having read (and loved) the book I wondered how well the author would do with the different voices... I shouldn't have worried, he's done a fantastic job and I enjoyed this enormously. One for a long journey. Sit back and enjoy!

In a strange room, and a dark place

Having listened to the audio of The Impostor and found it compelling and plot-driven, I had high hopes for this book. It was clear from the beginning that the nature of the tale would be more philosophical, a musing on the nature of travel and identity, but I struggled at times with the third part, where the narrator plays the role of the Guardian. One needs great inner resilience to listen and not to be reminded of other friends lost in a similar way. Clearly this is a true, and haunting tale, but too, too poignant at times.

That having been said, there is so much to praise here: the narration is good, and once again the landscape is vividly described and comes to life before one's eyes.

Psychotravelogue...

This book explores the desire, pressure and joys of travel - interfaced with self-exploration and a set of relationships with other travelers, random acquaintances and close friends. Traversing a number of settings in Africa - Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania - and others in India, the reflective author explores friendship, love, loneliness, interfacing with experiences of corruption, power, terror, and anxiety. Nicely written and narrated with some beautifully written passages and insights, at times unsettling. Recommended.

Very entertaining

Iâm coming to this novel rather late, which is unfortunate in a way because I would have loved to have read it earlier, but itâs good in another way because I see Mr. Yates has another novel coming out soon and now I donât have to wait as long to read it. Moondogs is a wonderfully unique and entertaining book, one of those gems that you canât easily put down (and wouldnât want to, in any case, because it's so engaging). Yates masterfully weaves together several different storylines, and brings together extremely disparate characters â some of the most memorable characters, in fact, that Iâve come across in ages. Also, his evocation of the Philippines, in particular Manila, was as good as any Iâve yet encountered, and itâs a delight to see his handling of language, showing dazzling playfulness while at times also carrying serious and touching drama. Heâs a master storyteller in every way.

Engaging Read

Moondogs captures the readers attention with images and characters that are totally engaging. Centered in the Philippines, Mr. Yates masterfully leads the audience through a maze of experiences that takes the reader on a journey through a foreign culture that becomes more familiar than foreign.
