    A Fast-Paced and Fun Coming-of-Age Story.
The Haunting is the story about Ebram Casas-Treski, a 12-year-old boy in a new town, a new school. Being in the lowest grade in the school--and the new kid--he is forced to deal with all of the middle school drama, as well as the bullies. Then there's his new neighborhood, a home to strange and mysterious occurrences: sounds, voices, and lights of unknown origins, and sporadic weather changes. The more Ebram and his younger brother and sisters learn about their neighborhood, the less they understand about the strange goings on.
I really enjoyed reading this story, couldn't put it down. Though it's been years since I've been in the same public school atmosphere, I could easily relate with Ebram in his experience because I myself was the "new kid" a number of times, and it can be a very uncomfortable experience not unlike what many middle-schoolers go through. It wasn't just seeing through Ebram's eyes that I enjoyed. Locascio brought each of her characters to life with creative personalities and unique characteristics, evidenced partially in her Shrouda characters--an intriguing concept. It was a fast, and fun read.
I think a lot of students will be able to relate to Ebram's story, it's well written and ideal for a middle school audience, with a few lessons weaved in. If you know any young teens who love to read, now you know a book they'd certainly enjoy!
    Great twist
The Casas-Treski family has just moved into a new home in a new neighborhood. Ebram is having more trouble than his siblings in getting used to their new surroundings. But soon they all find themselves settled in with new friends and new schools. Although it's not the home they left behind, Ebram starts to accept it. Then the family notices strange things happening, as someone called Mazie starts talking to the children.
One of Ebram's new friends, the family babysitter, calls herself a shrouda. The members of this youth group wear distinctive items of clothing, and strive to live their Christian faith by doing good in the world. Ebram like this idea, and wants to also do his part in helping.

    Fascinating plot
I found the second book of the "Toby" story more exciting than the first. The idea of minute beings who believe that their tree is the whole world and that anyone else is suspicious and dangerous seems a subtle social comment on people today. This book is written for young people who I hope "get it" but also has something to say to the rest of us. Well written and holds ones attention.
    My daughter loves it!

    good
Great book and brilliant page turner. best book I've read in a while. A must buy really really good !!! Enjoy
    EPIC BOOK. VERY FAST LOADING.
Epic book. Very fast and all that. It is the second In the series, so read the first before this.
This allegorical tale is an optimistic one, though, and the story will ultimately pull at your heartstrings
Toby Lolness watched helplessly as his life crumbled away. His parents, Sim and Maya, were found guilty of crimes against the Tree and sent away as prisoners. Leo Blue, his former best friend, put a price on his head and slowly picked away at everything important to him. Elisha, Toby's romantic interest, was captured and held captive. Leo Blue doubled his efforts in drilling a deep, harmful crater in the middle of the Tree. Feeling lost, abandoned and powerless, Toby fled to the Grass People to try and forget his tortured past.
Once there, Toby slowly began to rebuild his strength, stamina and heart. He made friends, learned more about the world, and rekindled the desire to fight against the injustice Leo Blue was inflicting upon the Tree. Toby vowed never to stop until the Tree, his home, was reclaimed and healed. Now, more than ever, Toby has reason to return.
Elisha is currently being held in one of the eggs in the nest in the North branches. Although not able to fully get Elisha under his control, Leo Blue is nevertheless moving forward with a forced marriage. Elisha's freedom is slowly disappearing, and Toby is nowhere to be found. His parents have been struggling under harsh working conditions in the forced labor camp that is slowly digging a large, destructive crater in the middle of the tree, and they're beginning to lose hope that their son is even alive. In addition to Sim and Maya, numerous Grass People have been captured and forced into manual labor as well. Treated as second-class citizens, the Grass People are looking for a savior.
Never one to give up easily, Toby has a plan. One advantage he has is that no one recognizes him anymore. He used to be small and wiry but has since stretched out and grown into a young man. The other advantage is that he can instantly make friends and gain the trust of those around him.

Ella's mum is in a deep coma, having just had a new baby. That means Ella has to live with Jack, her hopeless stepfather, and cope with her tiny newborn brother, as well as worrying about Mum.
The only thing that's going right is her school project. It's all about whales and how they sing out to each other to attract a mate - sometimes for hours. Maybe a whale song could reach Mum, wherever she is, and bring her back to Ella and baby Samson. Surely it's worth a try?
    Critic Reviews:
"Wilson's clear, honest writing crackles through this moving tale ... This absorbing novel packs an emotional punch which should satisfy Wilson's many fans, old and new." (Booktrust)
"This story will delight ... As always, the characters are beautifully portrayed and you are really drawn into their lives, especially that of Ella" (Parents In Touch)
"With its honest characters and dialogue, its unique coverage of the trauma Ella and her family experience, and its ability to unite readers with Ella's coping process is a tender, moving story in the classic Wilson mould." (Inis)

    The longest whale song review
The longest whale song is about a girl called Ella who has a lovely mum and a stepdad not to her taste. When her mum has a baby, Ella's mum is terribly ill and is put in a coma. Ella has to cope with all the problems that come her way, including meeting her real dad and taking in that her best friend has abandoned her. Will Ella's love and the longest whale song bring mum back?
This book shows what life is like for others and what they've been through. This book is brilliant and very well thought through.
    By Katya Gower age 9.

    Publisher's Summary:
Born in 1800, William Holmes McGuffey had a remarkable ability to memorize and could commit to mind entire books of the Bible. After becoming a teacher at the age of 14, classroom size was just one of several challenges faced by McGuffey. In many one-teacher schools, students ages varied from six to 21, and few textbooks existed.
In 1835, a publishing firm asked McGuffey to create a series of graded Readers for primary-level students. The series consisted of stories, poems, essays, and speeches, and it is estimated that at least 120 million copies of McGuffey's Reader were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Websters Dictionary. Since 1961 they have continued to sell at a rate of some 30,000 copies a year. No other textbook bearing a single person's name has come close to that mark. McGuffeys Reader is appropriate for a variety of ages/reading levels, but most closely approximate 3rd to 5th grades.
