My students loved it!

I recently used this book in a fourth-grade reading group. The students loved it. The story engaged them; they could not wait to see what would happen to Emily next. The characters have so much dialogue that I let them read it in parts, and they loved doing so. In fact, they wanted to do it with the book we read following it. It was interesting to see how this opportunity to take on a persona helped them develop as expressive readers. For my students who had never met a punctuation mark they could not ignore, it forced them to pay attention to quotation and end marks. I used the book to give mini-lessons on punctuating dialogue, counting paragraphs, alliterationâthey all wanted to be the one finishing the chapters so they could read the closing statements. I was able get them to use inference skills as they described the characters and their personalities. Incidentally, they loved laughing at the interaction between the sisters and Emilyâs evil uncle.

Enough of my thoughts. The best recommendation I can give comes from my students. When I mentioned that a new Emily and Jackson book would be coming out later this year, they were quite excited. Days later when discussing what they want to read in the future, more than half the group mentioned the new book. Theyâre not the only ones who have it on their reading list.

Awesome story!!

This is one of the neatest stories I've ever read!! It's fun, funny, and keeps you reading! And I didn't even fall asleep reading it, which I do so often with other books. I was hooked on this book from the beginning. I am amazed at what variety of books Ms. Naylor has written. As another reviewer wrote, it is a very decent book--other than the two deaths and a swear word here or there--and you won't be able to stop reading it until you reach the last page!!

Perfect Summer Reading

My 4th grade daughter loved reading this book! Funny, suspenseful and entertaining. A recommended good read for students this age.

You have to be kidding!

This is my second review on a John Grisham book and seriously this is almost kindergarten stuff. Boring, sentimental rubbish. Nothing like pumping out a book that barely rises above mediocre. Dont bother wasting a credit on this one.

Half the length, twice the enjoyment

If John Grisham wrote this story to reach a wider audience, I think he will succeed. This novel is far less technical than his legal thrillers, and much less tense. Still, the story moves along with pace and humour, and the characters are all believable and interesting.

The narrator does a good job and by the end I was hoping the book would go on longer. Great story, brilliantly told.

A great book to start Audiobooks

Excellent narration. The book comes to life through the hundred thousands voices that the narrator has. This is the perfect "First Audiobook" - Simple, effective and terrific.

A lot of promise but fails to deliver.

I thoroughly enjoy Grisham's books and was looking forward to this one, even though I knew it was a children's book.

The plot is slow and unexciting, with no real sense of conclusion. Whilst I appreciate it is a children's book, the level of exposition is far too high and treats its audience like dimwits e.g. going as far as to explain what a judge is.

The characters are shallow and unbelievable, a class of 13 year old boys who show no intererst in girls and don't have cell phones? Or the main character who is far too perfect for a boy his age, or the fact that this is a state school that has classes of 16 children per class.

As a set up for a sequel there is some promise, the potential intrigue around Theo's uncle and the roll over from this story possibly.

I'll give the next book a chance, but to be honest, based on this Grisham should stick to adult fiction.

Is this really a work of John Grisham

I have read many John Grisham books and generally feel very inclined towards reading more. I appreciate this was a childrens book but felt this was just not very interesting I couldnt care less about any of the characters and Theodore Boone had no substance to him in my opinion. I finished it just and can see that there are other Theodore Boone books following on. I for one will be on the other side of the street walking in the opposite direction from them!

Wanda E. Brunstetter does it again. Just Plain Foolishness is the continuing story of Rachel Yoder, an Amish pre-teen. This is book 6 in the series.

Rachel has a new little sister, and she is feeling just a little jealous and left out. It seems she's always in the way. She and some of her English friends decide to go to an amusement park. Rachel does not ask permission. Her family is frantic with worry. When Rachel is around, trouble is not far away.

I love this series. I always know that I can give them to a child to read without worrying about the content. Wanda E. Brunstetter allows readers a glimpse into the Amish lifestyle. Regardless of the culture, girls face the same emotions. They want to be loved, and when a new baby is around, they often feel left out.

Rachel needs glasses.

This is the fifth book in the Rachel Yoder--Always Trouble Somewhere series. I am always on the watch for books that will appeal to my granddaughter, an avid reader. This one fits the bill perfectly. Second grade through fourth grade girls will love this series. In A Happy Heart, Rachel Yoder, usually a pleasant girl, has turned into a grouch. Rachel Yoder needs glasses, and she has too many chores to do. I look forward to sharing this one with my grandchildren.

Wanda Brunstetter is a talented author. It is always a pleasure to read her books. Brunstetter usually writes about the Amish. I find their life fascinating. She writes in a positive manner. When it is a book by Brunstetter, I know it is safe to pass it on to children.

Dog that can act like a human?

My boys (aged 5 & 7) enjoyed this - largely I think due to the fact it has children and spying in.

I found it all a bit of a stretch. Dog surfing? OK. Dog climbing ladder? Umm ok but no thumbs. Dog riding motorbike? Sigh, you've lost me.

I think it was a good book for the age of the audience. Not ideal for adults who have to listen too. Can't wait for them to get into more complicated books so I can enjoy them as well.

My daughter loves them!

It is so hard to find decent books for our children, so it is a blessing when our daughter likes something that is in a series...we know it will last a little longer than a few days! I think she was 7 or 8 when started these books but will keep them for her kids (a long way off! smile).

Wonderful!

Provided a great story and treasured time between my daughter and me. I love the Godly values it promotes, and the insight into the Amish lifestyle. Beautifully written, and very enjoyable!

A Familiar Light

I enjoyed Cadillac Light very much, especially Holt's deft art of creating characters. I think I'm beginning to see a similar pattern in her books' characters and stories, and though this is not at all a bad thing in itself, there is a danger of making a template out of a personal style. Guess it's just the writer in me.

Wow!! loved this book

This wonderful book held me from the first to the very end. It was like eating the best ice cream cone from first to the very last crumb of the cone. Her characters were so real, made me laugh out loud and even tear up at times. I cannot praise this Author enough.. She is that good!

Best book I have ever read

I love it so much I cried at the ending. I am now happy that I had to do this assignment for school.

It is 1968, just before Neil Armstrong's historic walk on the moon, and eleven-year-old Jaynell Lambert lives in the little village of Moon, TX, with her father Rollins, mother Arlene, and ten-year-old sister Racine. Her mother's sister, Aunt Loveda Thigpen, and her family, Uncle Floyd and cousins Sweet Adeline and Little Floyd, live in nearby Marshall, TX. Jaynell's Grandpap, Maurice Boudreaux, also lives in Moon. A little while before the book opens, Grandma had died. Grandpap started moping and mumbling around, so Aunt Loveda and Uncle Floyd took him home to live with them until he started planting sugarcane near Loveda's roses, so the Lamberts took him into their home, and Jaynell had to move into a room with Racine.

A lot of people think that old Maurice is going crazy. He had been a mailman, and now he wanders around the neighborhood, taking folks' mail into their house from their mailboxes and visiting with them. While out on Caddo Lake in his boat with Jaynell, he runs some duck hunters off, although admittedly it was not yet duck season. He goes and buys a bright green Cadillac and even lets Jaynell drive it in the field. The only other crazy person whom Jaynell knows is Betty Jean Kizer who, after her son Clyde T. was killed while swimming in the creek, runs around with wild hair and dances in the moonlight. Then, Grandpap turns his old house over to the Pickenses, a family which many in town consider "white trash." Uncle Floyd is even talking about going to the sheriff for an eviction notice. What will Jaynell learn about her grandfather that will change her attitude towards him, her own family, and even the Pickenses?

The characters of Kimberly Willis Holt's books, which include My Louisiana Sky, Mister and Me, and When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, have been called quirky. I would certainly agree that this is true for Dancing in Cadillac Light as well.
