Dragons and Ninjas

This book was really good for my whole family. We took a 3 week camping adventure last year and we opened our trip with an audio version of this book. My kids (3-9 at the time) were hooked. Really good adventure, really good plot, lots of fun and excitement.

A worthy companion to Alex

In "The Secret Garden," Frances Hodgson Burnett created Mary Lennox, a snarky, attitude-filled brat who finally got a clue.

Why am I talking about a 97-year-old classic when this review is supposed to be about Adrienne Kress' new book, Timothy and the Dragon's Gate? Go with me here. Timothy's favorite response to just about anything is, "Whatever." If Mary Lennox were dropped into the modern world, I'd bet money that "Whatever" would be hers as well.

Timothy isn't an underachieving punk. Just the opposite: he's brilliant, insightful, and bored. Adults can't deal with his intellect and attitude and he's been expelled from every single school in town. His dad is ineffectual, his mom is off pursuing a mediocre acting career. When Timothy has to accompany his dad to work because no sitter will come within a mile of him, he falls into an internship for his dad's reclusive boss.

Oh, about the dragon. And the gate. And all the possible adventures that combination conjures up. One might think Timothy--this unlikable eleven-year-old snot--makes the combination doomed to failure.

Don't be fooled. As Kress did to Alex in her first book, "Alex and the Ironic Gentleman," Timothy is thrown into danger and adventures. He has to rely on his intellect to make it through--with the dragon in tow. (Abandon hope. I'm not going to reveal it. About the dragon, that is. And that's why I can't quote my favorite line: the dragon says it, and I'd spoil the plot.) In the process, Timothy messes things up to a point where he admits he can't blame his weak father, his absentee mother, his teachers, or anyone but himself.

Great read aloud book for my class

I use this series to read aloud to my special education class. My kids love the story and it has good messages about caring and sharing.

The whole series of toad books by Morris Gleitzman were enjoyed thoroughly by my 9 year old son. His teacher also read Toad Rage in class, and it was a big hit among all the 3rd graders.

Great book

you should read the first book first though, it's a great series . I thought it's a funny series.

It had alot of very childish cliche themes with no real threat. Monsters died without ever having any real confrontation. There were better stories from strange matter.

Joyful Noise/I Am Phoenix audiobook

This audiobook has the 1989 Newbery winner, Joyful Noise, poems about insects, as well as an earlier, similar book, I Am Phoenix, poems about birds, by the same author. They are read aloud by anywhere from two to five voices.

The most effective poems, though, were those read only by two (as the author intended) that also had few or no contrasting words spoken simultaneously. I found the overlapping in the latter often difficult to understand, especially when read aloud by more than two voices. In Joyful Noise, five voices were used on "Cicada" (its concluding line is the source of the book's title) and "Whirligig Beetles." All this did was make the poems too loud (they seemed to be shouting) and too difficult to understand.

On the other hand, "Honeybees" was quite successful, even when overlapping, especially as voiced on the audiobook by a boy (the worker) and a girl (the queen). The boy was especially effective in expressing the malcontent of the worker bee's life, portraying frustration in lines like "then I put in an hour making wax, without two minutes time to sit still and relax," "..I'm on larva detail feeding the grubs in their cells, wishing that I were still helpless and pale," and "Then I build some new cells, slaving away at enlarging this Hell, dreading the sight of another sunrise, wondering why we don't all unionize."

I thought the poems in I Am Phoenix were less effective; most seemed to simply be naming species of birds. Nevertheless, both books benefit from being read aloud; neither book would be as successful if read silently by a single person. Running time for both books is only 35 minutes.

Depends on the Readers

HI, With Joyful Noise/I Am Phoenix on tape how much you like it really really really depends on the readers/performers. The best one I've heard was by Lloyd and Twomey. The poems are meant for only 2 voices, so I don't understand why some publishers have more than 2 people doing them. I've listened to other performances and some have been HORRID -- my 8yo dd made me turn them off they were so bad -- the inflection was condescending and overacted and the timing was all wrong. Lloyd and Twomey are wonderful! Their voices are full of inflection and meaning without being overdone and their rhythm is impeccable. This is the one I searched for and have now purchased -- we love these poems and listening to them over and over in the car. Hope that helps.

This is an excellent book of poetry for two voices. I highly reccommend it.

Charming and well written story

Author Emily Rodda has created a charmingly engrossing tale of two cousins who enter the music box world of Rondo. There, the cousins Leo and Mimi, meet a cast of familiar fairy tale characters. The reader (or listener in this case) will find humorous and somewhat different perspectives on the lives of some of these characters. For instance, we are introduced to Bertha, a rather vain and seemingly shallow pig, who is a fierce and successful wolf fighter. How about the gingerbread men called "dots", obnoxious pests that infest cellars and dark places. A clever and funny character is the Hidey Hole, who you just have to meet to understand. And then there is the beautiful and evil Blue Queen with a magic mirror who has enchanted the beautiful daughter she hates. Leo and Mimi who don't like each other, end up being thrust into an adventure which will teach them some things about themselves and each other. They learn to get along with one another, learn the extent of their own courage and perseverance, and discover that things aren't always as they first seem. We are treated to a host of revelations about the different characters along the way which keeps the story moving and interest from waning.

Edwina Wren does an excellent job of narration. The different voices she uses for each character is quite impressive, so much so that it seems that there are numerous speakers rather than just one.

I look forward to hearing the next installment on stories from Rondo!

Best Book

This book is very good for ages 5 - 15 and is narrated very well. I have listened to it a million times and know every word by heart. It tells the tale of Mimi and Leo who travel into a magical world. It is great for lover of fantasy, comedy, adventure and general stories that are interesting and light a bright spark in your brain. I also recommend the other rondo books.

moxy maxwell is back...and funnier than before

Everyone's favorite procrastinator is back! I think this is the best and funniest book in the series. It took most until easter the year before to write her thank you notes and her mother insists they be written before moxy leaves for her trip to Hollywood. Writing the notes won't due for moxy, so she finds another way, with the whole extended family joining in. Chaos (and of course hilarity) insue. My favorite part is the ceiling painting remark. It doesn't get any less funny. Good for reluctant readers because once you start reading, you'll want to know how it ends, no matter how old you are.

LOVED IT

It was such a short book but such a good book. I read it in 2 days and really enjoyed it. I really think all you people who are reading this should get it.

Moxy's hilarious!

Moxy has a problem. She has to write twelve thank you notes or else she won't get to go to Hollywood to see her father. She's been looking forward to this trip but has one little problem. She HATES writing thank you notes. Why can't her mother realize this? When her mother goes to the mall to exchange a dress in time for Moxy's trip, well, let's just Moxy's got some ideas on how to speed this process up.

This book is hilarious!!! I was laughing throughout the story and at Moxy's attics. Also included are photographs of what goes on in Moxy's house. From spray painting HANK YOU on the wall( hey, it wasn't Moxy's fault the paint went over the paper!) to the photo of the macaroni decorated pencil cup holder(who didn't make one of these as a kid?). Funny stuff! I highly recommend this!

We couldn't help laughing

First, the reader, who also happens to be the author, is great. He was able to supply just the right amount of sarcasm to the dialog. The story was funny and silly but interesting enough for a wide range of ages (10 y.o. 13 y.o. and mom all liked it). There were, surprisingly, some deeper issues to think about, like cultural sensitivity, but presented in a very funny way.

Excellent book and narrator!

The book is funny so well written and read that my son asked, "Is this a book? It's sounds like somebody just talking." All of our boys listened to it ages 5 to 15 and enjoyed it all the way through! The author reads it so well that you wish there was another book when it's over just to hear him read!

This book spurs a child's imagination

This story is so good that it is difficult to believe it's Paul Feig's first book for children. I'd classify it as humorous science fiction that is likely to be enjoyed most by children between ages 7 and 12. Read the publisher's review for more details. Excellent book

This is a short easy and fun history book that blends excerpts Robert Louis Stevenson's "Amateur Emigrant" and "Across the Plains" with Jim Murphy's prose and descriptions. I was expecting a kids book but far from it - while not academic or even pretentiously so, it's on par with a PBS episode of "American Experience" and reminds me of how fun history can be. The historical photo's are excellent, numerous and tightly connected to the text. Highly recommended for anyone interested in RLS, American history and the immigrant experience of the late 19th century. Jim Murphy has written about a dozen books like this including some Newbury award winners, hope to read some more, the language and prose is easy and leaves a strong impression of time and place, very enjoyable.

And we think air travel is grueling.

Enlightening, little-known history about what people endured to journey by train from Atlantic to Pacific in the 1800s.

An excellent telling of an important, an over-looked part of our national history. Great for kids and adults alike.

Across America on an Emigrant Train.

This was a wonderful over view of the hardships endured by our ancestors as they made their way west. There is not really to much information out there about the emigrant trains and this one helped reinforce my own research of my own Grandfather's trip to the west coast with his family from West Virginia as a boy.

Highly recomend for anyone interested in Pioneer times and life.

A magical tale

A lovely children's story of a family uprooting to move to the country. It tells of the son Oliver's period of adjustment and his magical adventures as he attempts to save the home called Gullywith which the family has bought. It all happens during the long summer holidays and indirectly the adventures also help Oliver settle into his new school

Easy listening for an adult but interesting, fun and engaging. Liked the real life family.

What disappointed you about The Battle for Gullywith?

The story was laboured, confused and so slow to develop.

The narration was poor - just read as if an average reader was reading to to their child - no differentiation between characters and no real feeling to the storyline

Such a shame. Susan Hill is a great author but she makes the mistake of reading this like she's reading to very young children, and as I work with children, I know that the rather patronising style quickly palls with them, as well as me! Someone else e.g Nadia May? would do a much better job. Do it again, please!
