Should be a classic!
This book is awesome. It is so well-written, with such quaint Victorian (?) style of writing... it should be a classic along with Oliver Twist." The quote on the back is very true: Every character, and I think every one, has another side to him and is out for himself. No one is who he/she appears to be...not even Sari.
I will admit, the book starts out slow, the print is small, and it took me a while to read it. But as you get near to the end you can't put it down. It's AR and Junior High level, with relatively few "bad" words. Good choice for a school library!

Perfect time for perfect book
Great middle school book for those who love history and mystery.
I'd definitely recommend this book to middle school students who enjoy mysteries and aren't afraid of historical settings - or, conversely, to those who enjoy history and aren't afraid of a mystery being mixed in.
Avi does an excellent job of incorporating historical settings and situations into this story: from the sponging house to debtor's prison; from the Traitor's Gate to the homeless, huddled masses; from a wealthy but woefully ill woman to the first inspectors at Scotland Yard. And while setting the stage throughout, allowing the reader to visualize a different time and place, there is a mystery to solve.
And therein lies my only complaint: there's a bit too much repetition of clues so that the reader isn't surprised when the mysterious "inspector" is finally revealed; or when the financial backing for both the Irish and the French is unmasked; or even the final moments before we're told who's really come to take the secret plans. But even so, the story is very well told. Fans of young adult fiction certainly won't be disappointed with this book.

THE TRAITORS' GATE is everything you'd expect from an Avi novel--a well-realized historical adventure, plenty of suspense, and lots of surprises along the way. Whether you're intrigued by Victorian England, you like a good mystery, or you're just looking for a book that will keep you guessing right until the final chapter, you'll find something to enjoy here.
It is the mystery of THE TRAITORS' GATE that will keep readers turning the pages. If 14-year-old John Huffam wants to save his family from destitution, he must find a scheming traitor, who engineered his father's arrest in order to force Mr. Huffam to sell the military secrets he has memorized. Unfortunately for John, he has more suspects than he can count, and every piece of information he learns raises as many questions as answers. Even with the help of a Scotland Yard inspector and a scruffy street girl who knows all the secrets of London, the task seems close to impossible. Yet John pushes on, through multiple twists and turns, to an ending that is satisfying yet unpredictable.
Underneath the mystery, however, there is a lot more to the story. At heart, it is a tale of lost innocence and growing up. John must come to terms with the fact that many of the adults in his life, including his father, are deeply flawed.
