    Captain Alexei Dimitrevich Korolev returns...
Moscow, 1937. Captain Korolev, a police investigator, is enjoying a long-overdue visit from his young son Yuri when an eminent scientist is shot dead within sight of the Kremlin and Korolev is ordered to find the killer. It soon emerges that the victim, a man who it appears would stop at nothing to fulfil his ambitions, was engaged in research of great interest to those at the very top ranks of Soviet power.
When another scientist is brutally murdered, and evidence of the professors' dark experiments is hastily removed, Korolev begins to realise that, along with having a difficult case to solve, he's caught in a dangerous battle between two warring factions of the NKVD. And then his son Yuri goes missing...
A desperate race against time, set against a city gripped by Stalin's Great Terror and teeming with spies, street children and Thieves, The Twelfth Department confirms William Ryan as one of the most compelling historical crime novelists at work today.

    One bullet wreaked havok
Outstanding and original whodunit set in Stalin's Russia. A regular police inspector is caught up in the paranoid
politics of Stalinism. Wonderfujjy narrated by Sean Barrett.
The most interesting one in the series
The Twelfth Department is definitely the most interesting book in the Captain Korolev series.
Korolev's personal and professional lives cross each other's paths and it's a very uncertain, most stressful period for everyone involved. With Stalin's rise to power came the terror and expanded powers of the secret police: citizens spying on one another, everyone could be investigated, arrested and sent to the Gulag often by using only extrajudicial punishment without further explanation. With that in mind, when Korolev finds out that he and his family are under investigation/surveillance it makes him cautious, willing to have the outcome of his current investigation influenced and fearful for his loved ones. He is trying to solve a double murder, figure out why his ex-wife might be in trouble and spend some quality time with is son, Yuri all at once. His most trustworthy comrades (some of whom would even qualify as friends?) come to his aid and they start the difficult task of finding the culprits responsible for the killings and his personal troubles.
I'd love it if there were more than just 3 books in the series. I came to like Korolev, the other returning characters and the insight into life in the late 1930s Soviet Union. I would recommend these books to anyone interested in this era and location.
Great struggle in the Politics of the Communists
A truly good old story of right and wrong and the abuse of position and power. The story is well written and the characters run true through the intricate storyline.
Sean Barratt provides the icing on the cake, voice and the craft give the story a meaning that draws you into the pre-war world of the Soviet Union.
    I would recommend this book.
    Cracking thriller
Some earlier reviews were quite harsh on this third installment. If you enjoyed the previous 2 books, then don't hesitate to listen to this. Exactly as expected, the series just keeps getting better! Enjoy.
Another fabulous book in this series
This book might be the weakest of the three so far but it's still a GREAT listen.

    Well written
This is an excellent story in an excellent series. High entertainment with exceptional characters. The mystery is well crafted. I didn't see the ending coming until the very end. I have enjoyed every one of Blackstone's stories and will read the rest immediately.
    Good Read
If you like historical fiction this story and series might just be something you would enjoy. The characters and storyline were engaging. The ending wasn't what I expected or particularly liked so I probably wouldn't read another book in this series.
    Five Stars
    as described
    Mystery Worth Reading!
Scotland Yard Inspector Sam Blackstone is tasked with bringing back a prisoner from America. Sounds straightforward, but his superior changes his assignment, and Blackstone finds himself working with a rather impressionable young New York Detective Sergeant Alex Meade. They both must wade through police and political corruption in order to find the murderer of a controversial copper, Inspector O'Brien. I will fully admit this mystery stumped me to the end. The interrogations were very cleverly done. Blackstone and Meade make a great and yet appealingly odd pair. Although they were thrown together to solve a crime, their easy rapport made the story enjoyable. I also love it when Blackstone talks to himself and the voice answers! I love his wry sense of humor. Needless to say, I will be reading "Blackstone and the Wolf of Wall Street" where the duo will work together again!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Spencer is a new author for me, now is he someone I will be binge reading
Sally Spenser.is a new author for me, he is a treat. I will be reading many more of his books

    I Like This Series
Another good DCI Wooden book. Why I'd never heard of Sally Spencer before is beyond me. Perhaps it is because they are British mysteries. By the way, Sally Spencer is written by a man. That makes it better for me. Sometimes mysteries written by a woman seem to lack a certain something that makes the book come alive. Many of them can be read for free with Kindle Unlimited & I have liked them well enough to actually buy some & plan to buy more!
    A Winning Series
This was my first exposure to the Inspector Charlie Woodend series, and I was pleased to find that there are a lot more titles available. I found it to be an Ed McBain 87th Precinct tale set in England in the 70s.
The story is dark, involving the kidnapping and murder of children. The police investigating the case are understandably edgy and anxious to halt any further killings. The plot twists are unexpected and refreshing.
It is well written with several engaging characters, just the kind of thing that works well for a series. I will certainly check out more of Sally Spencer's works.

One of many good books in this series!!
Would you listen to another book narrated by Kevin Kraft?
Yes, Kevin Kraft has great tone and timing. His voice is clear and I like it. His voice for the child, however, seemed too big. His females are mostly good but his male voices and characters are really great.

    Wonderful idiosyncratic, funny,unique heroine
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I love these books. Flavia is a unique amateur detective. She is frighteningly intelligent, unstoppable, funny and yet vulnerable. Why can't I find all the books in the series on audible? Even some I have don't seem available now. There is a new one due out in September 2016. Why can't I find it to pre order on audible? Is it because there is a film coming out?
What did you like best about this story?
The main character , the setting, the humour and unusual plot. Enjoyed all the books in the series so far.
What about Sophie Aldreds performance did you like?
    She captured the character beautifully.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
More Flavia de Luce please! Bravo Alan Bradley. These books are both funny and dark with a wonderful heroine. I love Flavia.
    Not my cup of tea
As this book had many good reviews I continued to listen rather than giving up after a couple of chapters. I did manage to put my initial dislike of the narrator's style behind me as I realised she sounds prissy because she is telling the story on behalf of a prissy girl. The unveiling of the murderer all happens very quickly and with little explanation as to how the police find out. Not great and I shan't be downloading any more.
    jumped the shark
I have very much enjoyed this series and characters within but this storyline was odd, jarring and quite unbelievable. A stepping stone for a new direction, it was badly conceived and most unlike the other books in tone and humour and its conclusion was most unsatisfactory. Flavia as detective no more. A very awkward transition.

Annie Honeycut is one of the countrys most daring freelance photographers, known for her willingness to risk anything for the perfect shot. She gets the picture, but it will be her last. Annie is found the next morning on the houses lawn, dead with a broken neck. After Annies funeral, her sister inherits the camera. As cautious and sensible as Annie was wild, Nora is nevertheless intrigued by Annies final picture, which shows a seemingly human shape in the corner of the room. I really wanted to give a better rating to this book but, the narration is too awful. The narrator has one tone. Her voice never strays from cheerful. No matter what happens in the story, she sounds happy about it. Forget the audio. Read the book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Stephen King on Christopher Smith: "Put me down as an enthusiastic Christopher Smith fan. Smith is a cultural genius."
From the #1 International best-selling author of Fifth Avenue comes Smith's best thriller yet!
Sixteen years ago, Camille Miller left behind her life as an assassin in order to raise her daughter, Emma. But now, when her billionaire father is found brutally murdered, she must tap into old instincts to learn who killed her father and why.
The suspects? Her six siblings, each so desperate for their father's money that they'd kill for it. What Camille doesn't see coming is Emma's plan to solve the mystery first. Or P.I. Marty Spellman's assignment, which is to find Camille or risk the deaths of those dearest to him.
Over the course of one day, all three players, plus Spellman's teenaged daughter Beth, find themselves in a race to the finish. Nobody's goals are what they appear to be. Twists abound. And not one single person, for one single moment, is safe.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent!
Kenneth Miller, billionaire, died in a fall down the staircase in his home, and one of his daughters, Camille, inherited, while the other 6 were written out of the will. After the will was contested, and the suit dismissed, Marty Spellman, private investigator, was hired to find Camille Miller. But this is no ordinary case: the man who hired him has threatened to dill his wife, ex, and daughters if Camille is not found within 72 hours. This was a well written story; the author switched between the viewpoints of Spellman, his daughter, Beth, and Camille Miller to increase the suspense. This was well worth the time to read!
    Unputdownable!
You have to face it: Mr. Christopher Smith is one heck of a storyteller. I have to admit that afterFrom Manhattan with Love: A Novella (The Fifth Avenue Series)I had my doubts... the author seemed to dispose of his heroes all too lightly. That's why I really dug for his new MC, Detective Marty, and his family. In A Rush to Violence, Mr. Smith shows he's not only a fine wordsmith but also a passionate and conscientious person who desperately wants good to win - in his books if not in reality. His new heroes - Marty and his wife Jennifer, Camille the assassin and her daughter Emma - are described with so much love and understanding that you find it hard to finish the book because you don't want to part with them!
A Rush to Violence is a fine thriller in every respect. The author's timing is perfect resulting in scene after scene of unputdownable reading. Mr. Smith is a fine writer with a lot of attention for detail that makes the story literally jump off the page. He does tend to go a bit over the top in places but he does it with so much panache and describes even the most implausible events so realistically that you have to agree that truth can be stranger than fiction. Honestly, I'm quite happy he's so prolific so I can look forward to more of the same.
I'd recommend this book to all lovers of dark, gritty, noir fiction inhabited by larger-than-life characters doing incredible things in the name of love and justice.
    Alex
    Excellent book and author!
As someone else mentioned, yeah, the plot started out a little beyond belief... but even as a skeptic, I decided to look past that and just go with the story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Noah Barnes grew up watching his hero, big brother Zeke, develop into an up-and-coming championship Heavyweight boxer. A tragic head injury leaves Zeke mentally impaired, and the "big brother" becomes the little brother, forcing Noah to resign from the police department so he can take care of Zeke. Noah opens a Detective Agency, and his gentle giant brother tags along as a show of force when necessary.
It's only Zeke's mirrored sunglasses, hiding his gentle, smiling eyes that keep people from knowing the giant is far from violent. Bored with matrimonial and insurance cases, Noah longs for the day when a "real case" will come along and offer him a challenge to his old police detective skills. His day comes when Dr. Anne Lynch, a beautiful veterinarian who owns an organic dairy farm in rural Pennsylvania calls him for help. Noah and Zeke drive out to Anne's farm, where Zeke is instantly smitten with Anne's dog Cody and the rest of her animals. Noah finds himself smitten as well-but not with the farm animals.
Anne is a widow, and a smart, witty woman who captivates Noah from their first meeting. Anne explains how Globalvision Energy has purchased the farm next door and has been fracking and deep-well drilling for natural gas. As a result of their drilling, she believes her animals are getting sick and dying. Her healthy herd of Holsteins is reduced to a quarantined pack of worthless beef, and no one will help her. The DEP, the local Ag Board and her government ignore her tissue samples and medical opinions.
"Fracking is legal" and she's just out of luck. Desperate to save her farm, she hires Noah to help prove the culpability of the drillers next door, but as Noah looks into the case, he finds much more than he bargained for. With billions of dollars at stake, Noah's simple case may end up getting him killed.

Great book! Could not put it down!
This is an awesome book! Noah is taking care of Zeke after he had a brain injury which leaves him unable to watch out for himself. Noah is now a PI because he left the force to take care of Zeke. Zeke isn't the main character in the story but you can't help but love him and his gentle giant ways. Anne contacted Noah as a last resort because her dairy cows were dying and she knew it was from the mining operation that was near her farm. She enlists Noah's help to discover the truth behind her dying animals. This story kept me turning pages all day. I couldn't put it down till it was finished. Thank you Diamond Dave for yet another great story!
Novel with great characters that stimulates logical thinking about our environment.
I, like David Salkin, do not claim to be an expert on fracing. That being said, there are certain industrial processes that one need not be an expert on in order to make a sound judgement. Salkin weaves his knowledge of this hot button environmental topic in and out of the enrapturing love story of a former cop and a widowed farmer. The combination of the two make for a MUST READ. The characters are all extremely sympathetic, and grow significantly as their lives become more and more intertwined when their battle VS industrial fracing heats up. Its a page-turner, a tear-jerker, and at points a knee-slapper. And you'll learn a little bit about the environment along the way.
