Sophie Rivers thinks shes fallen on her feet when a temporary research post takes her to George Muntz College, just yards from her Birmingham home. Her new employer offers pleasant, even lavish, facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. Perhaps, though, all is not as comfortable as it seems, as Melina, a computer technician, may have been about to explain. For once Sophie doesnt have time to listen. But when Melina is found dead, its soon clear that other people are keen to hear what Sophie herself has to say - both her home and her college office are bugged. There are any number of suspects. Theres the elusive Principal; Melinas former colleague Dr Trevelyan, rapidly confined to a psychiatric ward; and Richard Fairfax, the powerful property tycoon who enters Sophies life. Then theres the fact that the College seems to lack only one thing: students.

    Three Stars
Good light reading, I like Judith Cutler, mostly, but perhaps you shouldn't read them all at once............
    Dying on Principle
Sophie Rivers - lecturer in English - has been seconded to a nearby college for a term to get a computer project up and running. The college is a short walk from her home and has more mod cons than where she usually works but she soon realises that there is something odd going on there.
For a start there seem to be very few students and management seem to want to oppress the staff as much as they possibly can. Then there's the new contract of employment which all lecturers are expected to sign. When a computer technician who had wanted to speak to Sophie urgently dies in mysterious circumstances Sophie finds herself involved in crime once again.
This was an interesting and intriguing read following Sophie as she tries to work out exactly what is going on at George Muntz and why Richard Fairfax, rich local business man seems to want to be friends with her. Her off/on friendship with DCI Chris Groom is well done too and I thought all the other characters were well drawn and interesting.
It makes a pleasant change to read a crime novel set somewhere else apart from London - this series is set in Birmingham. The book is well written and I feel the author really brings Sophie to life. She is a likeable character even though she is far from perfect and doesn't always make the best decisions.
Third Sophie Rivers Mystery Set in Corporate Education
Seconded to work on a computer project at George Muntz College, Sophie finds herself missing the rather rundown surroundings of the prior educational institution where she had been a lecturer in English. George Muntz College is far more concerned about the well being of the Managers of the College than the technical or academic staff.
Then a young tech's body is discovered in a garbage skip and a lecturer in computer studies has to be hospitalized for psychiatric problem. Meanwhile Sophie finds herself threatened by possible accidents and harassment.
One think I really like about Sophie is her randiness when it comes to an attractive male, although she has some appalling bad luck when it comes to her choice in men.

Appropriately, someone must die in order for Kareem to get his way.

    Breath of fresh air
This is the third book I have read by Rahiem Brooks. I really love the series about the Bezel brothers. This book has a very intricate action packed plot. I love the way the story is weaved together. The story starts off with Andre' Bezel in jail and his younger brother Kareem orchestrating a plan to have him released. Kareem is a mastermind at creating plans to get the family out of trouble for the perfect crimes they commit.
Even though the brothers are still young, I believe they are in their mid twenties they are still with their high school sweethearts. I really enjoy the back-story of love between Tasha and Andre' as well as Toi and Kareem.
Kareem Bezel is a very intelligent young man and a very successful entrepreneur. All he wants is a better life for his family. Even though he goes on a white collar crime spree to fund his fashion line Bjorn Prodigy you can't help but admire his ambition.
Andre' Bezel is a former drug dealer who had to commit some crimes to stay on top of his game. Leaving the drug game behind a little too late and joining his brother in a more upscale crime of fraud and identity theft has landed Andre' in prison. Too bad the wits of his younger brother sets Andre' free on bail after a year to rekindle his relationship with his girlfriend Tasha and his son.
I really enjoyed this book and I recommend everyone pick up the first book Laugh Now and then read Die Later. It's refreshing to read a book with a great story line different from the usual urban books. I can't wait for the next installment of this series. I'm wondering how Kareem will get his self out of this mess.
Who Said Sequels Were Inferior?! Laugh Now!
The Bezel brothers are back at it and involved in the trial of their lives. From page one this novel will command your attention as you are taken on a chase that ends in irony for the unlucky thug who crosses the wrong path. You will see just how complex the minds of the Bezel brothers really are as they leave you picking your jaw up in anticipation of their next move. Unpredictable to say the least are the protagonists in this title as they maneuver the pages with chess-like precision! I was throughly impressed with the character development and non-stop action in this book. Looking for a page turner filled with dramatic effect and an unmatched air of mystery? This is the title for you. It is hands down the author's greatest work yet! Salute!
    Die Later (legal thriller)
I found Die Later to be a very interesting read. The moment I read the first chapter I was hooked and could not put it down until I finished. I commend Rahiem Brooks for writing this book that was full of intense drama, mystery and thrills and for a great story line that intwined each character. Look forward to his next book.
    Five Stars

An experimental rafting expedition, an FBI manhunt for a delusional killer, and the worst storm in decades collide in the remote mountain wilderness...and then THEY come out.
    "'Deliverance' with fangs."
    THE GORGE
Bowie Whitlock and a team of celebrity athletes is commissioned to test two experimental rafts in the rugged Unegama Wilderness Gorge in the remote Appalachian Mountains, considered the most dangerous whitewater rapids in the eastern United States. Photographer Dove Krueger, Bowie's occasional lover, is there to document the journey. The expedition is tense from the start as jealousy, romance, and money are riding on the mission's success.
FBI agent Jim Castle and his partner are in the gorge looking for Ace Goodall, a deranged abortion clinic bomber. Ace, accompanied by a fragile young woman, is having visions that guide his murderous behavior. A trip-wire around his camp detonates a rigged explosive, tearing apart part of a cliff wall and exposing a long-hidden vampire species to the world.
The race is on as dark storm clouds gather, the river is swollen, and Ace hijacks the rafting expedition to make his escape. But the bloodthirsty creatures swooping down from the high cliffs have been too long without prey.
Ace has one more bomb. God is talking to him. It's raining again, and his young companion is pregnant. And killing isn't what it used to be, because the dead no longer stay dead.

    I'm torn over this one.
Fairly well written (ever read one of those books where there appears to have been no editing process at all? This is better than that.)
    Story moves along along good.
Interesting baddies. Appalachian vampires? There's a series in there somewhere.
But hell, I don't know when I last read a story with so few (zero) likable characters. Everyone in this story seemed motivated only by how big a jerkface they could be.
Seems like it could have been a lot better. Vampires. In Appalachia. It has such promise.
    A Bit Disappointed
I happen to be a fan of Scott Nicholson, and enjoy his writing immensely. Unfortunately, I found myself disappointed in this novel. It wasn't because of it not being a typical vampire novel, because it's not. That is actually the intriguing part of the novel. The characters are so well developed and you get to know each ones thoughts and feelings. But the book forms this grand crescendo and then nothing! The ending was a complete disappointment, leaving the reader to wonder what happened!
For those readers who are expecting your typical vampire story, with the sex and pleasurable neck biting, forget it! This book introduces you to a vampire that you will not get to know personally. It leaves you feeling flat.
Despite my feelings for this novel, I have still remained a fan of Nicholson's. I still find his books to be thrilling and well written and would recommend any of his other books to anyone.
    Bloody Appalachia
The concept of putting the "fangs" back in vampires gets a lot of buzz these days. In large part because of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series, but it can also be traced back to Anne Rice.

Six young people who had worked for the Kennedy administration in 1963, but all in minor jobs, receive a death threat 10 years later for reasons they "will fully understand". Why them? They hadn't even known the president. Then one night Congressman Thomas Medwick is killed. His car veers out of control, and the police rule it an accident. But George Williams, one of those named on the list, knows better. As a deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department, and its most skilled investigator, he takes the threat seriously, indeed. He had loved the young president, had shared the excitement and mission Kennedy had inspired in America during the '60s; for Jack Kennedy, Williams would have sacrificed anything. But he never thought it would have to include his life. An epic story of the men and women of the Kennedy years.

    Fantastic listen
Would you listen to Last Man at Arlington again? Why?
This is an excellent novel, which I'm so glad I listened to.It is a finely crafted and constructed thriller - well plotted and researched - and very engrossing.Last Man at Arlington was written in, and takes place, in the early 70s, with the era almost serving as one of the novel's characters. Initially some of the references to "grass" and "hash" and "draft dodgers" seem a bit archaic 40 years on, but the novel ultimately captures the sense of loss over the death of JFK, mistrust of government in the immediate aftermath of Watergate, animosities stirred by the war in Vietnam, and interdepartmental and political in-fighting in Washington really well.Listening to the novel you can tell that Mr. Dimona knew what it was like to work inside the Beltway and also that he did significant research to make sure technical aspects of the novel were realistic..Point of view bounces from the villain/antihero to the six potential victims, to the hero and back again - with backstories supplemented by Hoover-esque confidential informant files. While I felt the story started a bit slowly, it gathered steam throughout and drew me in until the exciting conclusion.I really enjoyed this book and would have gladly read or listened to any follow up (the hero George Williams could have carried a series), but sadly Mr. Dimona passed away.Last Man at Arlington stands as a fitting tribute to Mr. Dimon's talents as an author.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Last Man at Arlington?
I really loved a detailed explanation of how the FBI dealt with written evidence, as well as the vivid anecdotes used to provide background for the novel's characters.
What about David H. Lawrence XVIIs performance did you like?
The narrator, actor and voice actor, David H. Lawrence XV!II did an excellent job narrating this story. While he used his acting skills to provide some fantastic character voices - including a Brooklyn mobster and a spinster aunt - he allows the authors words to tell the story, which is how it should be.
    Any additional comments?
    Highly recommended.

    Good rea
The story played out very slowly, which is why I gave it three stars. But the last 3 or 4 chapters really made up for it. Former childhood friends seek revenge, employees trying to rip off their employer and 2 undercover FBI agents made for one heck of an ending.
A story of friendship, love and gore
If you like hard-driving crime fiction this book delivers. You have had to grown up in an urban environment with a group of friends who would be bonded through all of time. The verbiage, description of actions and emotions touched me and brought back memories of my early years. The game of Ring o levio was played everyday that it didn't snow or rain. There are only three of us left. All in our 80's. Even though we are scattered all over the states we are as close as if we were still running the streets of Fort Apache in the late 1930's.
