After another wild night at his bar, Freddy's Lounge, he arrives home to find his front door riddled with bullet holes and his windows shattered. His live-in grandfather, Cecil Tango, drunk and angry, a pistol within reach, raves about being attacked by a long-dead outlaw named Percy Yates. Freddy discounts Cecil's accusations as alcohol-induced delusions. Following that fateful night, Freddy decides to seek justice with the assistance of a couple of friends. As he begins fitting together pieces of a sinister puzzle, Freddy realizes there is a kernel of truth to his grandfather's claims. Someone is looking for Percy Yates's treasure. And they believe Cecil Tango has it. Up against unseen evils determined to harm his grandfather, Freddy is ill-prepared for the forces out to get them. But he will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and protect his loved ones. Then, when detectives uncover an audio tape of Lyons talking to a gang member about the benefits of getting shot, they release the tape. The embarrassed newspaper editor fires Lyons, who then sets out on the streets of Southside Los Angeles with a vengeance to find the shooter. An imprisoned, notorious gang shot-caller known as Big Evil, who Lyons made famous in a gang profile and whose younger brother is among the victims. But who is doing the killing?

    A thrilling page turner
Crime novels aren't my genre, but this engrossing book, which is in part a sincere homage to the microcosm of LA, was captivating. Krikorian's undeniable personal experience with the subject matter shows through, and is the foundation of a great thriller, written with plausible plot lines and original, but believable characters. The book is undoubtly gritty in its realistic depiction of gang life, violence, and even journalism, but an equally gritty humor is found throughout the book that the reader with enjoy.
The structure and narrative techniques are well executed, but most impotantly the perspective of the world given by the author is absolutely unique.
Bottom line: it is a fun book to read and well worth the readers time.
A Passionate Thrill Ride Through Los Angeles
Southside was a thrill ride through Los Angeles, taking me to rough streets, dark bars, LAPD squad rooms and rushed newsrooms. I liked the writing a lot. it was lean and fast. But, then on just about every page was a simply wonderful sentence or two that made this book so passionate. I read on the back of the book jacket a comparison to George Pelecanos, which is what got me to buy the book in the first place, and after reading Southside. I would agree. I hope there is more. Being from Los Angeles, I'm looking forward to more from Michael Krikorian. L.A. has lots of great novelist, Michael Connelly at the forefront, but we need more and Krikorian provides a vivid gritty tour of the, well, Southside of Los Angeles. - Oliver Silverton
    A Geat L.A. Story!
"Southside" is a fascinating tale of journalism combined with street gangs. There's many great Los Angeles stories about killers and detectives, but this debut book by Michael Krikorian ranks with "The Poet" by Michael Connelly as my favorite book about a crime reporter. Urgent, vivid and raw with a good dose of humor. Very highly recommended! - Jeanine Sarah Brown
    Fast paced, edgy, Bool.
I was trapped in this story with no exit in sight, such a good read it was.
Wish it was longer. Maybe a sequel will satisfy. What do you say, Michael?

Stay away if you have a weak stomach!
If you could sum up Turtle Island in three words, what would they be?
    Evil serial killers!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Georgina. A female FBI agent trying to make it in a 'mans' world, and paying a price for it. Actually all the characters were written very well, and Carmen Beaubeaux did a great job voicing all of them.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book was kind of hard for me to listen to at times due to the content. I so wanted the bad guys to get what was coming to them, and I was anxious as the clock was ticking down. I wouldn't say this book is a favorite- but it definitely got a reaction out of me. It reminded me of the movie Untraceable with the internet playing a part in how a person is tortured and how fast they will die- all aired live on line, but this goes into so much more detail with it.
    Turtle Island
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It was hard for me to pause and do some other things but I listened to its entirety. Good audiobook to listen to.
    Many twists and turns
What made the experience of listening to Turtle Island the most enjoyable?
the many different voices of the narrator was great.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Turtle Island?
Child pornography?? And they walked away from it? Told me right there it was an inside job the police don't let sleeping dogs like that lie..
    Any additional comments?
If it is suspense you are looking for than this is the book for you. So many twists and turns you have no choice but to back track because you think you missed something..
I received this free for an honest review
    This novel was intense
Turtle Island by Darren E. Laws is the first in a trilogy called the Georgina ONeill Trilogy. Georgina ONeill is an FBI agent who arrives in an ordinarily quiet town in Mississippi to find a dead body and a murderer to catch. Rick Montoya and Leroy LaPortiere are local detectives who are shocked by the sudden appearance of murder in their town. Three of them work together to case the murder as the case escalates and they uncover not only murders but cases of pedophilia. Now they must find and arrest the perpetrators and determine whether these crimes are related or if Turtle Island has suddenly been transformed into a criminal hot zone.
This novel was intense. I didnt find the beginning particularly interesting and I didnt find the characters particularly compelling.

    Publisher's Summary:
In 1975 the small town of Hulis was ground zero in a frantic search for 10-year-old Merrie Frances Callahan, as well as an intense manhunt for her abductor.
Thirty-five years later, it seems the FBI would like to pretend it never happened.
Special Agent Constance Mandalay didn't get that memo.
The small town of Hulis is hiding a killer secret.
In The Bleak Midwinter is based on the short teaser novella Merrie Axemas: A Killer Holiday Tale, but it tells the whole story of 10-year-old Merrie Frances Callahan's 1975 abduction, and the present-day murders that are somehow intricately linked to that event.
SA Constance Mandalay is assigned what appears to be a seven-year-old cold case that echos the events of the 35-year-old child abduction. Unfortunately for all involved, the case heats up for a short time each year with a brutal murder that appears eerily staged, and occurs under impossible circumstances.
Undaunted, she faces the task with no backup, a mysteriously redacted case file, and the inevitable murder fast approaching.
Mandalay's experience as the handler for an FBI occult/paranormal expert makes her the perfect choice for this investigation. However, even her brushes with the unexplained still cannot prepare her for the answer she was not supposed to discover.

A holiday thriller that's hard to beat
I read the original short story Merry Axemas before taking on the first of the Agent Constance Mandalay series. Having recently gotten into audiobooks as my standby for obtaining my literary fix, and having read the Rowan Gant Investigation series by MR Sellars, I was quite excited to find this particular story available as an audiobook. I was not disappointed. The story was incredibly compelling, thrilling and shocking, as all the best thrillers should be. The narration was well done and allowed me to become engrossed in the story almost as well as reading would have done. I felt the narrator really captured the stream of consciousness of Agent Mandalay, and allowed for the story to really envelop the reader. No spoilers here, but what an amazing read/listen.the attention to detail in the crime scenes, the character development, all lead to an ending that is certain not to disappoint. I look forward to more of the MR Sellars books to make their audio debut.
    Worst Narration Ever
Would you try another book from M. R. Sellars and/or Nicole Greevy?
    Maybe
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was a whiny as the child in the book. Every emotion exaggerated - couldn't even finish the book.

Ein Buch das mich nicht losließ. Eine SciFi Story der besonderen Art.
Und ich muss jetzt unbedingt die "Fortsetzung" lesen.
    Excellent time travel mystery.
Finally, Andreas Eschbach's best novel has been released in eBook form (probably, certainly, because its sequel - 'der Jesus-Deal' - is being released later in the year).
I've read it perhaps 4 times over the years, and enjoyed it as much the last time as I did the first time.
Included is a sample from 'der Jesus-Video', which I have on pre-order (I don't expect it to be as good though, but hope to be surprised).
Inexplicably, 'das Jesus-Video' hasn't been translated into English.

Could not put it down, very compelling
    Like it
It's a nice read and easy. I watched the movie became curious about the book. I'm not dissapointed. Than"s a lot
    Well Written
This was one of the better thrillers I have read in quite some time. Although there are a few holes, the book was well-written and well thought out. What I liked about this particular book is that the author didn't leave you hanging - at least not entirely. The plot centered around a search for a video camera and cassette tape that were supposedly used to film Christ 2,000 years ago. During most of the book you aren't sure whether the whole thing is a huge hoax or whether it really happened. During several of the chapters the reader is left thinking that Christ never existed at all. As has been said in other reviews, the camera and video are eventually found and that is where many thriller authors would have left things, principally because of the complications involved in continuing the plot from that point. However, this author actually takes the plot several steps further and clears up a lot of loose ends. The book pictures the role of the Catholic Church in all of this in a very negative way. Many soul-searching questions and points are taken up as the book goes along. I thought the plot was intriguing and thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone. Sadly, I think it is only available in German. The author ought to get it translated into English so it can be put on the English-speaking market.

    Publisher's Summary:
The Jack Lazar Series has it all from mystery and suspense to action, humor, and sensuality.
Meet Jack Lazar, a wealthy businessman whose battles are usually fought in the boardroom, not on the street for his life. But an evening on the beach at the brink of a raging storm changes all that as he witnesses the shooting of a beautiful woman, saves her life, and thrusts himself into the middle of a corrupt DEA investigation.
To make matters worse, Jack was just blackmailed into leaving his lucrative job by one of the firm's senior partners, and now he discovers the event is somehow connected to the DEA's case. How is that even possible? But the DEA won't tell Jack anything, so he sets off on his own mission to solve the mystery, and every step digs him deeper into trouble.
Sexy Government Agents Always Make Things More Complicated
Sarina is the stunning, exotic agent Jack rescued, and she gets a little out of hand when it comes to sex. So Jack is immediately hooked as any red-blooded male would be, and it's probably why he pushes so hard for them to join forces. But Sarina has a knack for disregarding orders and creating havoc, so it doesn't take long before people want to kill her... and Jack, too.

    Scribbles - Absolutely Excellent Read!
There are some books I prefer over others; that's just human nature regarding preference and prerogatives. However, some books tilt my personal Richter scale exponentiall; Scribbles is one such book. Give me my "Multiple MC's" (as I refer to them) and I am one extremely happy camper. Mystery, Murder, Mayhem and Mind Control, coupled with Conspiracies, Cool Characters and lots and lots of Conflict is always considered icing on the cake. Ms. Tommy Lyn even goes a step further and weaves a romantic interest-turned-love affair for our deeply scarred protagonist and flawed heroin as she steals the heart of her readers. I just enjoyed this book so much I really hated for it to end.
I did have my peeves about the book, and believe me, I'm outspoken enough to comment on them (even though I can't wait for the author's next book about Meg McAllister's supernatural gifts!). First off, the story ended rather abruptly (not cliff-hanger abrupt) and I'm not sure why. There were also some parts of the book that were totally unbelievable; however, that's the nature of science fiction, right? Another issue was the inherent neediness associated with the protagonist that rubbed me the wrong way (but those are obviously all MY issues more than the author's).
So why the 5-Star rating after these gnawing peeves were obviously triggered? Simply put, the book's positive attributes FAR OUTWEIGH the negative ones. Also, conspiracies and psychic powers can be challenging topics for some of the best writers out there. That being said, I would really like to commend the author for stepping out of her comfort zone to pursue these difficult topics. Anyway, Thu this is a must-read for conspiracy/sci-fi junkies and anyone else who loves lots of action, adventure and suspense in their reading material. Good job Tommie Lyn!
Never read, not sure why asking for review
I have not read this, and can't downloaded on any of my devices. It is asking for a review and I can't simply delete the review request for some reason
    Interesting
Others have written an overview of this book so I will say that I did enjoy it very much. I do wish that several parts had been more fleshed out. I wanted more information about the device and some of the court details about how the parents were convicted. Also Meg read the details about the convictions but we find this out after the fact.

Twenty years ago, Ray Campbell, now a cautious risk-management consultant, was a well-intentioned aid worker dedicated to improving conditions in Lubanda, a newly independent African country. He is forced to reconsider that year of living dangerously when a friend from his time in Lubanda is found murdered in a New York alley. Signs suggest that this most recent tragedy is rooted in the far more distant one of Martine Aubert, the only woman Ray ever truly loved and whose fate hed sealed in a moment of grievous error.
Martine Aubert was a white, native Lubandan farmer whose dream for her homeland starkly conflicted with those charged with its so-called development. But it was Rays failure to understand Martines commitment to her country that had placed a noose around her neck, one tightened by a circle of vicious men, cruel taunts, and whistling machetes. Rays return to the passion hed once felt for Martine makes A Dancer in the Dust the enthralling and moving story of two loves: Rays love for Martine Aubert, and Martines for a homeland that did not love her back.

    Good read.
This is a fast paced action packed storyline involving a UK counterterrorism black ops organization. There are numerous twists and turns as the plot includes international intelligence coordination, the Russian mafia, murder, black widow bombers as well as UK domestic and foreign operations.
    One Star
Poor grammar, misspellings, poor plotline, terrible editing.
Soft Target II Tank (Soft Target Series)
Obviously I like this guy's writings . . I've read about 4 of them - they can be a little on the poorly-edited side but easy to overlook - good stories; really keep moving -lots of action. Keeps one's interest.
    Fun Fast Read
Nothing very deep here. But it is very satisfying and moves at a brisk pace. I'd recommend it to someone who likes action but doesn't like to think too hard.
    Enjoyable
The bad points first, this is the second soft target book I read (currently on my 4th) and a continuing theme is the almost amateur publishing on the kindle edition, whether it be spelling mistakes or several blank pages in a row. Then there is the authors use of re-using large chunks to go over similar plots or describing ttf members. Then there's the silly stuff like the author only seems to know one motorbike (Honda blackbird). All that aside I'm really enjoying the series and hoping it expands more as the author learns his trade. All in all a great holiday read from a new author who is learning his craft
