    Supernatural Mystery
If you could sum up The Cross of St. Anne in three words, what would they be?
Enchanting story with romance, witchcraft, and things that go bump in the night
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Cross of St. Anne?
When Annie opens the case and the St Anne's cross is not in it.
Have you listened to any of Bill Burrowss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Bill Burrow's is a new to me narrator. I like his deep voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Annie discovers that the Devereaux family is not anything like she thought they were.
    Any additional comments?
I liked this story because it had a mixture of romance, supernatural and spooky as well as some surprises that things as well as people are not always what they appear to be.
Step in to the Masion of Mystery
Annie is driven to Curt's mansion by his chauffeur/handyman Spenser, she doesn't like him, he makes her feel somehow uneasy. Curt is not there to greet Annie, instead she is met by Karen who runs an hotel nearby, in her down time she assists with the planned museum. The two women take to each other immediately and Annie accepts Karen's invitation to tour the house.
On their return, Curt appears, and when the time comes to complete the delivery of the relic Annie is stunned to find that it's missing, but as she last saw it during the trip to the house she could only conclude that it had been stolen. Annie's nightmare begins.
She meets Curt's strange family who treat her with hostility and she finds staying in the mansion to be a creepy and scary experience, she wants to leave but the police and Curt want her to stay until the theft has been resolved. From her gloomy bedroom she witnesses strange goings on in the dead of night, why was Spenser out in the grounds carrying a shovel? In true sleuth fashion she ignores all risks to her safety and sneaks out to follow him, she almost gets the life scared out of her by the sinister cat. That's not the most frightening thing she is to experience! She finally gets to discover what lay beyond the locked door of the chapel.
This book is what I would call an almost cozy, it has all the cozy attributes: female comes across a crime; turns into amateur sleuth, abandons common sense to put life and limb at risk, and there is of course, a bit of romance. It's a good formula but this story is just a bit too sinister for the cozy label as there are some potentially disturbing accounts of occult and evil activities. The author certainly knows how to create atmosphere with some great descriptive writing, yet I didn't find it a compelling listen, and I certainly needed the denouement.
    Narrator
Narrated by Bill Burrows, who has a wonderful voice but I found his style too "announcer" like.

    A Thorne Tour De Force
I've enjoyed Mark Billingham's work for many years now. I first found out about his detective thriller writing when I'd gone to listen to Christopher Brookmeyer talk at a Book Festival event and Mark happened to be on with him. Mark's transition from stand up comedy to thriller writing seemed odd and intriguing then. But reading the Tom Thorne series it seemed to make more sense - there was lots of observational detail and black humour peppers some of the characters core relationships. His research into the issues that are used in his books, especially around homelessness, abuse and drug use - marks him out as an author - lending sensitivity and realism. I really enjoyed Rush of Blood - one of his stand alone thrillers that I listened to. So I was excited at 'the new Tom Thorne book' and wondering where on earth it was going to go - in pretty much every sense of the word - after the mayhem on Bardsey Island in 'The Bones Beneath'.
Mark Billingham performs this book and how. I was gripped from the beginning, I was up all last night feeling emotionally wrenched around by the rollercoaster ending. I read and listen to so many thrillers that I'm amazed that I didn't see plot twists coming - I don't know if that was due to me be being so emotionally caught up in a harrowing story that seemed all to real. The pace and switching of narrative voices seemed just right to me - I wanted to know what was going on with each set of people and was worried about the other characters who were out of the action in the moment.
The story and the characters became more powerful, real, punchy and gripping the nearer it got to the conclusion. And I'd thought it was a bloody good book to start with. I purposely haven't mentioned anything - the directions the book takes, the how and the why of it, are part of the skill and the art. I wouldn't have liked to have missed any surprises or twists and turns. I'd just like to give the author a standing ovation.

Bullets. Booze. Bad luck. It's all here.
These tales - best devoured with a stiff pour of bourbon - delve into the dark underworld of drifters, gangsters, wannabe hoods, and small-town folks in slippery situations. Written in terse and urgent prose, these stories cling to the edge of reason and peer into the dark abyss that is human deviance.
Here's a taste of what you'll find in Tough Guys, an entertaining collection of thrilling stories:

    Tough Guys=Good Read
Five star read. Nice original stories, live characters. Dialogue leaps off the page. Grits, blood, and tough guys going soft, highly recommended.
    Entertaining!
Enjoyable and very different short stories. A couple of them had me scratching my head, wondering what I just read but for the most part, the reading was entertaining.
Guns, girls, bourbon (of course!) and...eventually something more.
Guns, girls, bourbon (of course!) and...eventually something more.
I would recommend this book for anyone out there that wants to read something quick and fun--someone who likes fast action, but also for someone who wants to see a writer grow. The first half will make you think `Tarantino.' But the end is where you'll find a new voice with highly entertaining and well-written stories and deep characters.
I was given a free copy for an honest review.

DI Alec Ramsay is stretched to the limit as a serial killer stalks the bars of Liverpool's busy city center. Six months before, riots tore society apart when fuel supplies ran dry, and the Western world ground to a halt. The inner cities were plunged into lawlessness. As a fragile peace is restored, a young child disappears from home. Her father is critically injured at the scene along with three members of a drug gang.
Detective Superintendent Alec Ramsay leads the Major Investigation Team in the search for the missing girl. The investigation is marred by the death of two undercover Drug Squad officers in the neighboring county. Internal politics and misinformation send their search into chaos.

    Difficult to follow
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Love to read the Alec Ramsey series on Kindle and thought I would give audible a go for a change. Wish I hadn't. The narration is awful. I became focused on Pauls pronounciation of 'vehicle' which was constant. It was almost like a computer speaking veh-hicle ! Also the female voice is terrible and very annoying. She did nothing for the characters she spoke for and sounded like a high pitched child. All this took away from the storyline so constantly lost my concentration
How did the narrator detract from the book?
    See above
    Dreadful narration
What would have made Frozen Betrayal better?
    A different narrator
Would you recommend Frozen Betrayal to your friends? Why or why not?
No, because I still have no idea what the book is about, I gave up at 2 hours as I cannot concentrate on the storyline due to the ludicrous american accents and the mispronunciation of various northern slang words made the whole thing indecipherable.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Holbrook?
Anyone with a English accent, preferably a northern accent, from somewhere in the region of Liverpool to lend some authenticity to the narration.
What character would you cut from Frozen Betrayal?
    The narrator.
    Any additional comments?
The Child taker and Criminally Insane are fantastic novels, I had hoped to enjoy the rest of series and feel sorely disappointed by this narrator.

Cattle thieves are always difficult to apprehend, but when they are protected by mountainous terrain, a lawman must resort to deception to gain access. A trio of thrilling stories from one of the masters of the genre.
    Members Reviews:
Mixed Bag of Western Stories - Not Recommended!
It's rather daunting to write a negative review of a book written by an author "The Tombstone Epitaph" rates as being 'in the top five Western novelists of all time.' Lauran Paine may be that good but either he had a bad day when he put together this short story collection or I don't know good writing when I read it!
This book contains two short stories and the self-titled novella. 'Renegade Rifles,' the first story, dates from 1952 and is an ok tale of a turncoat Cavalry officer selling guns to Indians. 'Trouble Weather,' date unknown, tells the story of an Indian-hating cattle baron who finds his lost humanity. Neither story is anything special but not bad reading.
'Rain Valley' however is another matter. Basically it's 160 pages of waiting for the other shoe to drop. The set-up: a mysterious stranger slinks into a remote mountain valley which contains several cattle ranches. Why is he there? What's he up to? Who's the mysterious man he keeps meeting? Will 'mysterious stranger' and the sweet young thing become an item and on and on. Sorry Paine fans but here's the other shoe - the guy's a lawman sent to break up a cattle-rustling operation. There, I've saved you slogging through a one-trick pony tale wherein bland characters make cryptic commments and it's all supposed to be so mysterious and, after 160 pages, who cares!?! 'Rain Valley' is one badly done novella; I hated it.
The book sells for $5.99. I can't recommend it even at that price.

A âDEAD DROPâ IS THE CATALYST FOR A DANGEROUS AFGHAN MISSION.
Four and a half RISKY Stars. âDead Dropâ (Dan Shepherd series) is a âSpiderâ Shepherd short story by talented author Stephen Leather. The plot has Shepherd and his sidekick, another Special Air Service (SAS) soldier, in Afghanistan and interacting with the âlocalsâ, which reveals some deplorable actions and an opportunity to execute a necessary mission with some action-packed engagements. Highly Recommended. Four and a half DANGEROUS Stars. (Amazon Digital Services LLC, publisher. 36 pages. Befriend and then betray: a rivetiing story of an undercover cop who is in the same jail as his target is.
If you want action, often disguise as planning and execution of an undercover police officer who really should be licensed as a deadly weapon, and whose undercover work is in a jail with very dangerous prisoners and one where the prisoners really run the internal operations of the jail, then this exciting and hard to shut book is for you. Written by a very experienced and highly competent author, Stephen Leather you can always be assured that right will prevail although in many cases it seems almost a complete in impossibility.
The tension starts early and is relentlessly maintained right thru to the extraordinary conclusion. Go ahead, invest in suspense, and enjoy this excellent book.
    Five Stars
This story gives a good idea of operations in Afghanistan, not pretty at all. Enlightening & full of action.
    enjoyable
The story was fast paced and enjoyable. Can't wait to continue the series from the short book. Similar to Chris Ryan and Andy McNab
    fine
It's a fine background, quick read, but for a $ I'm satisfied. It stays in the general style of the other books.

I liked the book a lot
I liked the book a lot. I don't think of it really as horror though. More suspense . Well written and very detailed. The twist at the end was a big surprise. Found the afterward to be helpful in clearing up any questions. In reading you find yourself wondering what is the crazy Sev going to do next. I would recommend this book for sure
    Fun, Clever, and Informative
A clever, fun, fast-paced book that was tough to put down. The complex representation of Smith's "heinous adversary" added depth to an already interesting storyline. If you love detail, you will love this book- Kirk's background in science and medicine was evident throughout. I recommend this book and will be looking forward to The Redivivus Trilogy
    Five Stars
    excellent read
A story, a puzzle and a mystery. You will really "feel" the horror!
I want to first thank Dr. Withrow for the opportunity to read and now review his book,Â"Four."
It was an enjoyable and quick read that was a story, a puzzle and a mystery rolled into about 130 pages.
As I am a writer of a dozen or so non-fictionÂ"How To" guides ("How To Use The Digital Camera You Just Bought" is the current one), I am always a bit in awe of anyone who can craft a story with fleshed-out characters from thin air! The author did this well.
But first, a caution: ÂDo NOT read this from back to front toÂ"get an idea of what it is about." ÂThere are also no spoilers in this review, so please continue.
The main character is a battle-hardened veteran of our wars in the Middle East. He is now living a secluded life with a service-related disability. Through back-tracking we learn that his solitary, almost accidental anti-social lifestyle began with a simple birth defect.
Muscles in his tongue made it difficult to speak clearly, and the merciless taunting of his schoolmates only ceased when a growth spurt made him much bigger and stronger than the others, and his "short fuse" temperament taught several in school what happens when he is angered.
Refusing an operation, he trains himself to speak Âwell, and his iron will and natural tendency to never be too close with others (combined with his physical prowess) is a perfect fit for dangerous assignments in the Marines. Â He finds comfort in the routine of the military and especially in the idea that his comrades never require anyone to bare his soul.

    Members Reviews:
    Good story
Good story , edge of the seat suspense in parts . Very good narration as usual from Jeff Harding
    suspenseful
Where does Suspicion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It comes very high among the thrillers I have listened to, I give it 4* plus, not quite a 5* because even though a book may be extremely good you can only give 5* to something you find exceptional.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
I found the locker room scene and Galvin's office scene very taut, but I think I liked the part where Danny finally decided to 'man up'.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Not that sort of book
    Any additional comments?
I chose the book partly due to the fact that Jeff Harding was the narrator. Big fan of Lee Child's Jack Reacher books.
    Suspicion - Too far fetched
    Suspicion - Too far fetched
This book seemed a little to far fetched &a daughter Abby's voice grated on me, even the great Jeff Harding ceding do a good job with voice
Good narration except for comment above
    A bit too long!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would - but with reservations. It is too long. 250 pages would be plenty! But still quite gripping
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Enjoyed it!
Which character as performed by Jeff Harding was your favourite?
    Tom Galvin of course
Could you see Suspicion being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
Very easily - in fact I think that is part of the problem!
    Any additional comments?
The relationship between the hero and his daughter strikes me as really rather creepy! All the big hugs and "I love you" seem a bit over the top - but then I'm a rather old Anglo-Saxon!
    Full of twists and turns
Where does Suspicion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This was my first listen to Joseph Finder, what a fine. He is up there with Lee Child, Michael Robothom etc. I will definitely be listening to more from this author.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Suspicion?
This story kept changing direction and you were never sure who was a good guy.
Have you listened to any of Jeff Hardings other performances? How does this one compare?
Jeff Harding is one off my favorite narrators he always brings the stories to life. Once again here he delivered a 5 star performance.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
If it seems to good to be true....It probably is!
    Any additional comments?
Great story top performance looking forward to hearing more.
