What disappointed you about Isaac Asimov's I Robot?

I thought I was purchasing a title by Asimov, but this is fan fiction. It reads like a simple detective novel. Very disappointing. I found it difficult from this site to determine this is not an Asimov book.

really over written and dull. sub par

the overly perfect main characters, the overly explained jokes, the constant medical jargon. it really just wasn't fun. All tedious with too many little discussions, and no over arching theme.

This book has very little to do with the earlier robot stories by Isaac Asimov. A very misleading title. It's more medical mystery than science fiction. Wasn't what I expected.

Good Story Terribly Produced

Who the heck edited this? The Narrator did an OK job. Maybe he was a little lackluster in expression. But the bad part was that retakes were not cut out. Liam would repeat a line or two a few times as obvious attempts to get it right and whomever edited the audio left these retakes in. Very distracting.

Then in a few cases, when announcing the next chapter's title it just sounds like the previous conversation continued. It's not until a few seconds later that I realize they moved on. Ugh. Terrible editing. OK narration. Good story.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better characters, better plot, tighter writing, narration with differentiation.

What was most disappointing about Jay Allans story?

The premise is fine. The last chapter gives a history of the universe leading up to this story. It is almost more interesting than the story. The battles are not engaging, and I didn't care about the people. They were not distinct or well-rounded, and they did not include the interesting characters in the first prequel.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Liam Owen and Sci-Fi Publishing ?

Mark Boyett, Jeff Gurner, Jeffrey Kafer, Nick Sullivan.

Sci-fi needs to do a bit more cleanup on their recordings. As has been mentioned in another review, there are at least 5 repeats in the audio (the last line or two is inexplicably repeated). Then the readings of the chapter numbers comes so closely on the heels of the last words of the paragraph that you think it really reads: "...and the ship blew up chapter seven." That is an editing/production flaw that seems very amateur. Aren't there industry standards or something about how many seconds to allow between ending a chapter and introducing the next?

What character would you cut from Bitter Glory?

Doesn't matter. None were distinct or care-worthy. I am sorry for the deaths but I was never involved so I couldn't get worked up about what's-his-name's grief.

Any additional comments?

Jay Allan has a good idea. Perhaps some courses on story writing, or some good work with a great editor would help. Any of my Master's Thesis chair people could help.

Please. Shoot this story.

I saw this book on a "Recommended Reads" list and it sounded interesting. After reading the synopsis and a few reviews I was even intrigued!

Then I listened to it.

The premise is pretty good, but it's ruined by what seems like a desire, by the author, to write a movie rather than a good novel. The characters are insanely irritating. The story lurches along like a hobbled puppy. Several times I wondered if it was a Young Adult novel trying to look big in its father's clothes. The heroine is someone you just want to dislike. The hero is flat and pretty stereotypical.

I ended up rooting for the protagonists because I just wanted the main characters to die.

Performance.

I think Hunter Davis did the best he could and took the only option available...lifting the characters from Seinfeld.

Putty, Elain, Bania...they make appearances.

It was just sad how much effort he put into polishing this turd.

So, avoid this trap. Really. It's bad.

I read the whole thing.

Some parts almost read like a romance novel, cringe, so maybe a 1+ star rating for some women, 2 star if you are 12 years-old since the work is sophomoric. Reading this book was a painful experience, so maybe 3 star if you are a masochist, which I might be since I finished the book. The pain grows worse as the book plods along. I think I finished this book to punish myself for having purchased it. I should have read the derogatory reviews more carefully, and after rereading the 5 star reviews for this book I think I will never again read or believe a 5 star review. From now on I'm going straight to the 1 and 2 star reviews before buying a book. I really don't like trashing an author. I know they work hard and have a lot riding on the success of each book, but this author should do his readers a big favor and find a productive way to spend his life. It isn't right to make your living by making others suffer. I love Sci-Fi but not fantasy. To me, good Sci-Fi must be plausible and the author should know more than I know about the science that under pins his story, which is not really that high a bar to clear. I am no Albert Einstein. Fantasy novelist don't even try to clear that bar. Their books are sheer flights of imagination, based on science that seems more like magic. That must appeal to magical thinkers, readers who's average age in 6 to12. Fantasy that thinks it is science fiction is just sad, and this book is an example. For me this book was almost unreadable. I deserve some sort of award for reading it through to the lackluster finish.

Too over the top

Series of books are too violent. The impossibility of surviving certain situations while a very high percentage of fellow characters being killed off is annoying. The fact that we humans couldn't find a common purpose after a global calamity to work together to rebuild society is improbable at best. The author has the world constantly in nuclear war after 90 plus of the human and mammal populations are destroyed by nanobots.

Overall don't waste your money on this series of books. If you get it for Free somehow then I'd say listen to it. You might be entertained by the complete absurdity of the situations portrayed in the books.

No Empathy

I tried to enjoy this book, but while the narrator did a reasonable job the author failed.

I made it half way through the book, but a good percentage was trying to give me the back story it failed to make the characters real, I could not feel anything for them, in fact at times I wish they just died (sorry couldn't help myself).

Takes MEARS Out of Your Life

IN MY EXPERIENCE GUYS WHO WERE ANAL ENOUGH ABOUT USING THEIR FULL FIRST NAME, NEVER BOUGHT A ROUND.

It has been a while sense a listened to Identity Theft, but I believe the first two hours of this book is that story or one similar. The first two hours is five star listening, but after that it gets old quick. I would not recommend buying this book, but I would recommend getting Identity Theft.

STUPID HAD IT'S OWN VELOCITY

Noir detective stories are usually good short stories, but not long books. After a while you lose interest. The action scenes where some of the worst ever. In the middle of a fight scene I found my mind wondering. Sawyer tries so hard to get a fight on Mars and it's low gravity come off as realistic that it is too detailed and too stilted. Parts of the book was sophomoric. All the women were curvy.

HITHER TO

There are parts that are funny. It is also interesting to consider if you could move your consciousness into a plastic, but real looking and feeling body, and be almost immortal, would you do it and what type of body would you get. It reminded me of breast implants. Suppose an old man could get a young muscular body, with a large endowment, so to speak, wouldn't he do it.

Christian Rummel is a top tier narrator.

Sometimes we listen to a futuristic novel and say to ourselves, "Yup, that could happen" or, "That is in the realm of possibility." A fun read, set in season 2, characters depiction true to the DS9 series, all the characters have a part to play in the book.

The return of the Horta

This is the 11th in the DEEP SPACE NINE series of STAR TREK novels and takes place early in the DS9 series.

The Cardassians had held Bajor captive for generations. Recently the Bajorans had regained control of their home and had petitioned the Federation to help them keep their hard won freedom. Now the Bajorans and their Federation advisors were desparately trying to rebuild the Bajoran culture and economy. Other than the Wormhole, which was discovered after they had left, the Cardassians had left few resources on the planet. In an attempt to locate any mineral resources that the Cardassians might have overlooked some enterprising Bajorans had contacted the Horta for help. The Horta, first seen in the original series, are a race of silicon based beings who can travel though solid rock as easily as others walk through their native atmospheres. The Horta had responsed by sending T'tan, a young mother with a taste for adventure. Complications arise when the ship transporting the Horta and her eggs is hijacked before reaching DS9. Sisko and the DS9 staff are then faced with the task of locating the kidnapped T'tan and protecting her children.

This is set early in the series and so fans of the series might find some frustrations with the characterizations. Over the course of the series the characters evolved and their relationships changed quite markedly. As long as the reader keeps this in mind DEVIL IN THE SKY makes quite an enjoyable read. The characters are consistent with what they were at the time the novel is set. The problems are compelling and handled well, the descriptions in particular are quite good, making it possible for the reader to easily visualize the action. It is also a treat to see the Horta again. On the down side the final resolution is a bit trite, most readers will see it coming very early on. No surprises with this one but some interesting scenes.

DS9 #11 Devil in the Sky - An enjoyable Trek tale!

I found it interesting to read in the interview with Greg Cox by Kevin Dilmore in the back of "Star Trek The Q Continuum" that Greg Cox and John Gregory Betancourt had written "Devil in the Sky" with only the series bible, the script for "Emissary" and having only watched a few episodes. The reason I found this so interesting is that in this novel, which was the inaugural Star Trek novel for both authors, they captured the characters and the feel of Star Trek Deep Space Nine so well. You will quickly find that the pacing of this novel and both authors overall writing styles lend well to a quick and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Both authors proved with this novel that both of their works, whether collaborative or individual, are to be looked forward to.

Too pricey!

1 star? Yes, because of the AMAZONE greediness! This is a series of 4 books with each book at only around 200 pages. Not only short, but about 30% of the first book is repeated over and over again in each successive making this seris WAY overpriced netting about 150 pages each! I am am avid fan of Jack Chalker's writing and although this series is a pretty good read, not his best and overall quite short.

AMAZON charges $5.99 for the first book, then books 2 & 3 go up to $7.99 each and finally the final one at $9.99 ! Cleary AMAZON is sucking it for all they can at the expense of the customer, knowing that once a series has been started an avid reader will want to finish, AMAZON is abusing their position by ripping off the buyer. Beware!

More "Chalkerish" Than the Previous Two

Jack L. Chalker's "Charon: A Dragon at the Gate" is the third in his "Four Lords of the Diamond" series. For the most part, if you've read the previous two books in the series, there will be no surprises here. About the only two differences I noticed are that the book has more of a "Chalkerish" feel to it than the previous books (more physical transformation) and the protagonist is presented with an additional enigma as he starts out on the planet. So, just like the previous two books, I rate this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.

Four books with interesting viewpoints

There are four (4) books in the "Lords of the Diamond" series, all of which are not only entertaining, but also have a buried commentary on possible future civilization, penal systems, and the human condition in general. This is the third of the series. As such, while it can be read as a stand-alone, it is much more enjoyable when all four books are read as a series and in order.

Though the series is now 20 years old, and not written in the style of modern science fiction, it is still enjoyable for all age brackets. For those of us who are 'older' fans, the style and content reflect the science fiction we grew up reading. As such, fans of 'cyber punk' and modern themes may not enjoy it, but it is still worthy of reading and as a reflection of how the genre has changed since the original days of "Astounding" and such magazines.

Love the books, disappointed in the kindle edition.

the 3rd book 15 years after the first 2

This is a little strange to me that the first book was written in 1986 the second in 1987 and then this one in 2002, that is a big gap in time but as it turns out it was for the better.

The first 2 books were sorta "dated" having some things in them that were, well, the best way to put it was "out of the 80's" and then this book in 2002 somewhat cleared up those things as well as add to some of the science as some thigns were missing in the first 2 books.

The "victory" that is in this book is something that you can probably figure out, but in case you cant I wont ruin it for you, we will say that what happens is not as expected but it exactly as expected - that is to say that the outcome was expected but the way it came about wasn't.

The thing about Michael McCollum is that his books that I have read when the "thing its all about" is over the book is over, there isn't anything really after the "thing" is over whatever that is, I wish there were some little after that but they do end properly.

I liked these 3 books and I hope a prequel is written because I think there can be like 3 more books before this one if not more than that.

Antares VictoryThe Book Where Everything Goes Well

What did you like best about Antares Victory? What did you like least?

I liked Antares Victory, a good cap to the series. All the characters come in to their own and play a role. The battles are well described, thought out and detailed. The space travel is very 'realistic'.

My main point that I love about McCollum, is that he is "fair". What I mean by this is that he doesn't give the bad guys superior advantage or have the hero's do stupid things to progress the plot. Both sides are well balanced. A lot of books give handicaps to the protagonists to make it exciting. In this book, the humans are just as likely to win the day as the enemy.

What I liked least is actually connected to the above... It goes a little too well for humanity. This book is really fun to listen to, but it seems to go all in humanities favor. No main characters die off, and by the end of it, I'm thinking, "oh new space battle! how is humanity going to kick butt this time??" instead of "oh new space battle, how is humanity going to faire?"

Overall though, I think this book is very fun.

Who was your favorite character and why?

My favorite character is most likely Adimiral Gauer. A hard steadfast, and unsung hero of the Sandar fleet.

Did Gavin Hammon do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

A very good job.
