    Editing, What's Editing?
This is a good story by an excellent author with a decent performance that unfortunately has not been edited properly if it all. There must be at least 15 or more instances of the performer repeating sentence fragments that obviously should have been edited out of the final copy. It occurs so often that it makes listening to this book for any length of time longer than twenty minutes into an annoying tedious task that has one dreading the next jarring break in the narration.
Hopefully Audible will strongly encourage the publisher to provide a fully edited final copy of this production so that other people purchasing this title will feel like they got a fair deal for their coin and not a half baked copy of a story produced by a lack wit.
    Good Mystery
A decent story with some fun characters though the technology seems dated. An overall good standalone novel and mystery. Doesn't need any sequels and not Bova's best but worth listening to if you're a Bova fan.

Audie Award Nominee, Science Fiction, 2013
We know you are here, our brothers and sisters....
Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop, where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost - how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers... to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia to either be trained as a soldier or, if they are too damaged and weak, to be used as live targets, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small. Pressia is on the run.
Burn a Pure and Breathe the Ash....
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss - maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter. Or maybe it's his claustrophobia: his feeling that this Dome has become a swaddling of intensely rigid order. So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her. When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Baggott's highly anticipated postapocalyptic horror novel...is a fascinating mix of stark, oppressive authoritarianism and grotesque anarchy...Baggott mixes brutality, occasional wry humor, and strong dialogue into an exemplar of the subgenre." (Publisher's Weekly, Starred Review)
"A great gorgeous whirlwind of a novel, boundless in its imagination. You will be swept away." (Justin Cronin, New York Times bestselling author of The Passage)
"Pure is a dark adventure that is both startling and addictive at once. Pressia Belze is one part manga heroine and one part post-apocalyptic Alice, stranded in a surreal Wonderland where everyone and everything resonates with what has been lost. Breathtaking and frightening. I couldn't stop reading Pure." (Danielle Trussoni, bestselling author of Angelology)

    Pure Surprise
Unbelievably, a while ago Audio was selling this book on a discount list. I bought it just to keep in my library if I ever found myself short on listening material. Now that the sequel has come out, Fuse, I decided to give the first book a listen, and maybe it was the discounted price but I was pleasantly surprised.
Billed as a YA book, to me, it has more of a sci-fi adventure feel, even though it did have some but not the usual overwhelming amount of teenage romance that is usually associated with such genre, as detonated super-bombs containing nanobot technology changes the face of the world. The post-apocalyptic result is a dystopian society separated into two groups: those affected by the bombs, and those who were protected by a dome.
I thought the descriptive graphic writing from Julianna Baggott was exceptional, if not a little dark, as she describes in great detail the twisted and deformed bodies of the survivors living outside of the dome.

Fast Paced Adventure in an Expertly Crafted World
I'll start by saying I absolutely loved it, and I'm shocked that this only Dayton's second novel. Her diction and writing style are indicative of a much more established author.
I'm usually leery of novels that involve multiple time lines, but I've got to say Dayton pulled it off beautifully. Through a series of flashbacks Dayton quickly sets up the premise for the book. From then on the series mainly focuses on the present day while periodically visiting characters 5,000 years gone. Once the common link between the time lines is established both proceed to tell their respective stories in a way that leads you yearning for the next chapter.
My only complaint is that the ending seemed a little rushed. And while all of the main plot lines were resolved there was room in universe she created for more. I hope Dayton chooses to revisit the world she created.
I've listened to a few books now where Kate Rudd was the reader and while I've loved her performances in the past, most noteably Debris: The Veiled Worlds, I was initially a little put off during the first chapter. I can't say whether the story was so good that I ignored what I had initially found displeasing, or Kate grew into the characters. Either way, I found overall that it was an excellent performance and I was glad that I got past the initial distaste.
OK but not the best I have ever read
The story line was a good one but seemed to lack dimension that would have made it better. Not shore if there will be another in this series, but I would buy it, just to see what happen to everyone.

    The Michaluk Virus is loose.
In the heart of Atlanta, the virus has escaped the CDC, and its effects are widespread and devastating. The virus infects nearly everyone in its path, turning much of the population of the southeastern United States into homicidal cannibals. As society rapidly crumbles under the hordes of infected, three people - Ethan Bennett, a Memphis police officer; Cade Alton, his best friend and former IDF sharpshooter; and Brandt Evans, a lieutenant in the US Marines - band together against the oncoming crush of death and terror sweeping across the world.
As Cade, Brandt, and Ethan hole up in safe houses, others begin to join them in their bid for survival. When the infected attack and theyre forced to flee, one departs to Memphis in search of answers while the others escape south to Biloxi, where they encounter more danger than they bargained for. And in Memphis, the answers that one man finds are the last answers he wanted, answers that herald a horrific possibility that there may be more to this virus than first suspected.
    Editorial Reviews:
In the first book of Jessica Meigs' The Becoming series, the Michaluk Virus has escaped Atlanta's Center for Disease Control, engulfing the Southeast and turning its citizens into zombies. Cade, Brandt, and Ethan band together in an attempt to survive the hordes of walking dead and find the truth behind the virus. Christian Rummel has an incredible burr to his voice, so pleasingly rumbling and intense in his performance of Meigs' story that he helps to make The Becoming a riveting experience. His laudable commitment to Meigs' characters and scenario should sway even the most undead skeptic of zombie fiction.

some annoyances but i enjoyed it
Would you recommend The Becoming to your friends? Why or why not?
sure if they're avid zombie fans. if you're new to the zombie genre, there are a lot of other books you should read before this.
    Any additional comments?
i've been eating my way through the zombie novels on audible, and i came across this one, the becoming. i was skeptical at 1st b/c of the cover art, but i gave the sample a try. being an avid zombie fan, i decided to download the book b/c of the fast start to the story.
the story starts out with brandt running, hiding, and fighting through the streets of atllanta. apparently, he was part of a marine contingent at the cdc (center for disease control) when a virus went air born and started infecting people. he abandoned his post as soon as he realized the red line was crossed.
the story then breaks to memphis, tn. it's the morning after ethan has been promoted. he's hung over. he manages to join his wife, anna, and best friend, cabe, out back for some grilled food. when ethan asks cabe about her boyfriend, drew, she tells him that he came back from his business trip to atlanta with a cold. later in the day, they get the news that there's rioting in memphis. anna is called into the hospital to help. as night falls, all H-E-Double Hockey Sticks starts to break loose.
the 1st part of the becoming covers the initial outbreak of the michaluk virus. then there is a time skip of about 3 months. this is done pretty well.
    the book is paced well.

The arrival of the aliens shot Earth technology forward at a dizzying rate---the world of 1960 includes routine space shuttle traffic, computers on every desk, and other high-tech advancements. Aftershocks reveals that it was the United States that launched the nuclear offensive against the aliens, and when the aliens learn the truth, Indianapolis disappears in nuclear fire.
In alien-held China, a full-fledged rebellion is launched, and in Poland, a nuclear bomb goes missing - held by Jewish forces who seek to use it against the Nazis. The nations of Earth begin to realize that their only hope in holding back the aliens will be to work together. Because separately, they may face extinction.

    Nothing much happens (entire series)
What did you like best about Aftershocks? What did you like least?
This is the third and last book in the "Colonization" series. After the World War series, this left me utterly disappointed. It feels like Turtledove got a contract for writing three books as a sequel for WW, but fell short on thinking up an interesting storyline. As with the previous series, the story revolves around the lives of several key characters, some new, some old acquaintances from the previous series.
The most interesting aspect of THIS series is the insight into the impact in culture, society and politics of living with the lizards for 40 years. But that's where it ends. All throughout the 3 books there are only 3 truly interesting events, that could have been condensed into a single book. All the rest is endless dribble about mostly irrelevant and boring every day stuff about the main characters.
Entire chapters seem to be dedicated to mundane dinner-time conversations that lead absolutely nowhere. I can't grasp why Turtledove dedicates so many paragraphs to the absolutely boring storyline of Rance Hourback and Penny Summers. The almost senseless yakking of the Russie's (don't know the spelling), Goldfarbs, even some of the lizard characters are utterly meaningless in the overall story. As it is, and on the third book already, I'm continuing just because I want to know what happens in the end, while being aware it's going to be horribly painful and boring getting there.
The narrator doesn't do very well either. I can't understand why they didn't keep the same narrator as in the first novel. Yet, after the first 2 books I got used to this narrator in every aspect except the way in which he portrays Jonathan Yeager. It just doesn't work.

A New Generation Gives a Fresh Feel
Down to the Sea is the beginning of a new chapter in The Lost Regiment series. I've read the entire series although I have to admit I struggled through books 7 and 8. It's not that William R. Forstchen is a bad writer, he's not. Or that Patrick Lawlor makes the books difficult to listen to, he doesn't. It's that the topic is gruesome and it begins to weigh not just on the mind but also on the soul. Anyone that has seen violence up close and personal will have no problem seeing in their mind's eye the picture of war that Forstchen paints and Lawlor makes come to life. Leaving the violence and butchery out of the picture the writting is good and the performance is just as good. But, this series is not for the faint of heart, the young, or those that have personal demons from war or violence. Forstchen does a little too good a job in painting his picture and makes you face a reality most people would rather not. For those unfamilar with The Lost Regiment it is about a group of Union soldiers trapped on a world far from home facing annihalation by an enemy that sees them as food. It is a story about the strength of the human spirit, human enginuity, the will to live, and the desire all men have for freedom. Down to the Sea continues the story with the second generation. It's now their turn to stand and to find out for themselves just what they are made of. I enjoyed the book and it was a nice change from the earlier series.
Patrick Lawlor is not the most versitile actor on Audible, but he does a good job with Forstchen's work. He has narrated the entire series and brings with him a knowledge of the work that is necessary to communicate Forstchen's complicated engineering concepts. Lawlor does a fine job delivering Forstchen's work.
    Beginning of Act II
Book 9 starts a new story. The stage is expanding and so are the characters; there is a risk that the world grow too big. Unlike in the Weber/Ringo "Prince Roger" series, where the main characters move from horde to horde, this series is bringing new hordes onto the orginal stage. Also, technolgy is developing at a frightful pace. Nuclear weapons if not aliens in flying saucers can't be far off (the raw materials for nuclear weapones were introduced in Book 2).
Also, I'm often reminded on Charles Stross's "A Colder War"......Don't go into the light!
Really enjoyed the new generation of the story...
    Any additional comments?
It's a shame that it looks like it's the last of the series given it was written in 2000. I would I have loved to see the storyline move further given the new generation of characters and tech advancement.
    A comment & a question
This book was splendid but it leaves the story unfinished. When will it be completed ?
    enjoyable and unpredictable
The book makes a great transition to the next phase of the Republics history. It kept me glued to my headphones.

But there are those who want to see the utopia destroyed, whose answer to tomorrow's best and brightest hope is mindless violence. And they have just entered Todos Santos.
    Members Reviews:
    Fun political science fiction
This thriller from the early 80's plops you down in a near future LA development with incredibly low crime, responsive government, and community togetherness. It's a paradise for engineering geeks and a good place to raise a family. Unfortunately, not everybody likes how they've gone about it.
This is one of the few utopian books I've ever enjoyed wholeheartedly. Rereading it all these years later, I'm not quite as thrilled by its libertarian vision, but it's amazing to see how many trends of modern life Niven and Pournelle predicted correctly. (For better or worse.) The fast-moving story still works, too, and most of the science fiction we haven't caught up with. Contains some sex and violence, as thrillers often do.
I think you'll enjoy your trip to Todos Santos. I know I did.
    Great book
    Even better listening than reading.
Makes you really think about the future. Well told story
    It's an entertaining enough listen
If you could sum up Oath of Fealty in three words, what would they be?
    anachronistic, interesting, futuristic
What does Jeremy Johnson and Suzanne Toren bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
They are quite good performers and really bring the characters to life.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
It's a worthwhile read/listen but it's definitely a product of the time it was written.
    Awesome Story
Excellent tale, but didn't make the translation into audiobook as well as I had hoped, still very enjoyable. Once again, the voices I had put to characters as I read were not quite what the narrators give us.

    Members Reviews:
And excellent book and hard to stop listen to
This is the second book about Dan Randolph even if it was writte well before Powersat.
The earth is heading towards a greenhouse cliff, a sudden climate change that will destroy much of the planet in ten years if something isn't done soon. The ice caps will melt. Cities will be flooded. Millions will die. When Randolph tries to let people know what's going on and try to help orchestrate a plan to avoid this catastrophe, government officials from the Global Economic Council (the GEC) confiscate his company, imprison him, and silence his scientific team.
The story continues and as usual it quite good and i find the book hard to put down, or stop listen to if you, like me listen to the audio book.
Stefan Rudnicki does an very excellent job adjusting his voice to each of the characters so you get a god idea of who speach. Speech tags become redundant. He captures a variety of accents well, and the voices match the personalities. He tries hard to get the Japanese right, but it doesn't roll off his tongue well.
Its even a bit scary to think that this book was written back in 1993 and quite well talks about some of the problems we have been facing today. The tsunamis in Indonesia and the flooding of New Orleans.
    Another keeper from Ben Bova
Would you listen to Empire Builders again? Why?
Yes, I would listens again, I enjoyed this book
What other book might you compare Empire Builders to and why?
I think I could compare this title to the Orion series, there is a lot of space travel and exploration in both
What about Stefan Rudnickis performance did you like?
I like Stefan Rudnicki, he is a very good narrator for truck drivers because he keeps his voice at a fairly constant volume, which is nice because I don't have to keep fooling with the volume control while I'm driving
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, I'm generally not an emotional person
