Modern syfy with traditional scifi roots.
If you.are bright enough to enjoy the creation of.a wholly different universe, and educated enough to appreciate its story telling roots and modern adult themes, you will love Anthony's Mode series. Read it slowly to.get every reference and nuance.
    Finally a Story!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, It's a very good listen.
What did you like best about this story?
The writer greatly expands Colenes character. The subject matter is simply fascinating and well developed explanations for those unfamiliar with fractals. The other main character, Darius, remains virtually undeveloped and we know little more about him than he is a guy from another dimension (mode) . Still I would recommend this book as very entertaining.
    Nothings perfect.
Which character as performed by Mark Winston was your favorite?
    The horse.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    No
    Any additional comments?
It's worth reading and well worth the listen, but not in one sitting. There are too many facts to absorb and enjoy!

    Strange
A strange strange story but not horrible. It is not as good as Lovecraft Country but I listened.
    awful
I looked forward to this book from an award winner but it ended up one of the few I've ever just lost total interest in, even at 3/4 through. I gave it an hour to get better and it got worse. m
    Really, really bad...no really
Really bad - the narrator, the story, everything. I was sucked in by reviews comparing it favorably to PK Dick and the like. It is not on par with any of his works; it is a truly lame mash-up of fight club, a scanner darkly and some other interesting works. the difference is, this is is a mess of cliches and sloppy writing. the "twists" are clearly made up as the author goes along. that and the narrator is indescribably weak. Look away, dear listener, look away..
    simplistic
uninteresting and poorly written, pass it by
Awesome - down to Earth dialogue
loved it. It has very good clean writing. grabbed me at the beginning and had me guessing throughout.

    Publisher's Summary:
AD 3580. The Intersolar Commonwealth has spread through the galaxy to over a thousand star systems. It is a culture of rich diversity with a place for everyone. Even death itself has been overcome. But at the centre of the Commonwealth is a massive black hole. This Void is not a natural artefact. Inside there is a strange universe where the laws of physics are very different to those we know. It is slowly consuming the other stars of the galactic core - one day it will devour the entire galaxy.
Inigo, a human, has started to dream of a wonderful existence in the Void. He has a following of millions of believers and they now clamour to make a pilgrimage into the Void to live the life they have been shown. Other starfaring species fear their migration will cause the Void to expand again. They are prepared to stop them no matter what the cost.
    And so the pilgrimage begins....

    Complex, fascinating and thrilling
Hammilton does again. Creating a truely manificient Si-Fi future, with a magnitude of ideas and technology I for one have not come across before. The plot unwinds slowly - this book alone is over around a 1000 pages and the story continues in the newly released follow-up. But that does not make Hammilton a slow writer - the story is facinating and captivating all the way through.
Reades migh be confused by the sheer number of characters and parallel plotlines, as well as the little trick of inserting a series of dreams essential to the plot inbetween the normal chapters. But rest assured knowning that Hammilton is the man to bring it all together to create that perfect picture in the end (the eventual end, that is).
It might be recommended that you start with Pandoras Star followed by Judas Unchained, since a few characters reapper (and that series is now completed). Not essential though, as the timeline has progressed 1200 years, and the plot is all new.
Hammilton is a must-read for Si-Fi fans, but be warned: Like me, you might not be able to turn it off. Beam me up.
    Superbly voice acted and paced
Toby Longworth's narration places this audiobook at the pinnacle of dozens I've heard from Audible. His pacing and voice acting is effective and diverse, and brings the book to life. The Dreaming Void itself is pure space opera, and really enjoyable. My previous exposure to Hamilton was via the Night's Dawn trilogy, which spun off into left field with its mystical/afterlife/religious overtones. I'm very glad to report that with a mix of post-singularity galactic society and very human politicking this one feels a lot more like Ian M Banks' style, particulary when the measured pacing explodes into the microsecond scale and violent energy of high technology combat. Great space opera, but the clincher for this audiobook is unsurpassed commitment and acting by the narrator.
A little confusing to start with.. and then...
OK I found the start of this book a little confusing, the narrative flits around like a butterfly from plotline to plotline without fully explaining who the characters are, but you get the hang of it eventually.
And then... Just when I was really getting into the book, it ended. It didnt really end with a satisfactory conclusion, or even a cliffhanger to have you wanting a sequel, it just stopped. It's as if the author was told by the publisher to hurry up and finish it. Well I for one am hoping there is a sequel.

The worst book in 4 years of Audible.com
Would you try another book from Robert J. Sawyer and/or Jonathan Davis and Robert J. Sawyer ?
Before this book, and to some degree before this series in general, I'd have said yes. I like some of their other books, but this was simply terrible. It fails in so many ways.
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds
    Which scene was your favorite?
Sigh... there were some OK parts, sections of the book that touch on science fiction. It all seems so forced though; those parts of the book were contrived and inexpertly jammed into a very bad story arc. It makes even the better scene's somehow feel outside the story.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Not much.
    Any additional comments?
So disappointing; I'm not so much bitter, but just incredibly disappointed. This really isn't worth your time. This is the first negative review I've written in over 100+ books.
    Hated it!
I liked the first book in this series a lot. The second one wasn't as good, but I still liked it. I was hoping that this book would redeem the second, but I thought it was terrible! I had to make myself finish it. There are so many things that were bad it's hard to know where to begin and I certainly can't list them all. The main female character, Mary, is often unreasonably bitchy and childish while the main male character (a neanderthal) is always calming her and being understanding of her petulance- it makes them both kind of boring. The writing was weak, there was hardly any character development. Well, we do learn that Mary seems to be quite the Star Trek devotee, several times connecting something in the story with a Star Trek episode - she knew the names of guest stars and who had directed. Perhaps Mr. Sawyer needed some filler and so he took from his own fanatical knowledge? According to the book, Americans are repugnant, there aren't very many American characters and none of them are good people. Throughout the series neaderthals are portrayed as having taken much better care of their world while we "gliksins" have ruined ours, which we have, no arguement there. But at one point the author compares neanderthals to Canadians and gliksins to Americans. Ok I get it, he hates Americans. Next sentence contains a spoiler: He also doesn't seem too keen on men (homo sapiens that is), so it's no surprise that the big villain in the book is an American male. Lazy, boring writing and I didn't like the narration either. Too bad, it started out as such a promising series.
Un-ending social commentary, not Sci Fi.
This first book in this series was very good. I love books about alternate timelines and this story about an alternate universe with Neanderthals as the dominant species was a great premise. However, the second and third books give up the science fiction and become social commentary books. In both the second and third installments are long dialogs about what I assume to be the author's pet peeves.

Final Blackout is a master piece!
I read it 2 decades ago, and decided to listen to it anew.
What a brilliant description of what a commander ought to be and do.
In those days of uncertainty, when government leaders are all about self power and blood shedding, this book is highly recommended :-)
    gripping story
the performance is excellent! the story is one that should be part of all countries history lessons. very educational. it should be required reading for any politicians.
Honor The Way It Used to be
A fantastic story about honor courage and sacrifice in the face of corrupt governments and their pawns. Refreshing in today's world.
    I liked this book
I really like some of the readings by Roddy McDowall and one of my favorites is his reading of Ole Doc Methuselah.
He also reads this book as well and does a good job. (It incorrectly says Bruce Boxleitner)

Great Political Satire with a Good Sci-Fi Story
I really enjoyed the book. Full of comments like "if we put sanctions on the French, then we must have a Wine for Food program" and "if Washington gets destroyed, we'll rebuild the capitol in Kansas - it's closer to Texas anyway".
Lots of likable good-guys and despicable bad guys spread out between Earth and the Moon.
    Worth the time
Not only did I enjoy the audiobook, my son got hooked while listening for just half an hour. It will keep your attention. Can't wait for the next one in the series.
    A really good story
It is well written and well read. There were a few twists and turns that challenge the disbelieve scale, but not overly so.
It was a great way to pass several hundred miles on the road.
    Great sequal!
This was a great follow up book to the first one (which sadly I have a hard time finding). It is an entertaining and thought provoking of what if's. A research station on the moon, intrigue, world conquest. Great book and you won't want to turn it off!
    Good Story, Awful Narration
First let me say the STORY was an excellent sequel to Coonts original Saucer novel. The narrator, however, was the absolute worst I have listened to. After the first couple hours, I put away the audible version with the intent of buying the book (paper) version so I could get through the story.
After not finding the time and letting a few months pass, I finally forced myself to bear the narrators monotonous, 4th grade level reading through the end. (Apparently this narrator never learned what punctuation is!) Anyway, my recommendation would be to buy the paper version for a great read. Unfortunately I would have to say stay away from the audible version.

    Great for fans!
If you aren't already a fan of the tv series or books you won't understand this novel. It continues were the series lets off and I thought it was great as the series left me asking "What happens next?" Captain Jack only appears in dreams but the story actually works without him. Gwen and Reece are parents and will do anything to protect there little girl. The enemies of Torchwood are still out there and so are aliens. I like this book as it makes one look at who the "bad" guys are and what it is to be human. With laugh out loud bits as well as scarey bits this book follows the classic Torchwood example and will be a treat for all fans. English sci-fi at its best.
    Great plot!
True Torchwood 'grab and don't let go' story!! I like hearing the plot from each character's perspective and in their own voices. Helps to not miss the show so much
    Really worth your time
Kept our interest through the full story, well read, loved it! Loved that Reese and Gwen read this again.
wow! story needed a bit of polish but great! what
what a great non torchwood, Torchwood story... griping, had the obligatory homosexual couple, a Torchwood standard, (Hence minus one star) super readings by the actors, recommended!
    Best Torchwood Book so far
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I'd recomment this book, yes, to anyone who enjoys science fiction whether or not they have seen Torchwood or Doctor Who
What was one of the most memorable moments of Torchwood: First Born?
My favorite moment is when Rhys is carrying baby Anwyn in the papoose. I love Rhys in general and that image stayed with me.
Have you listened to any of the narratorss other performances before? How does this one compare?
This set of characters could only be brought to life by these narrators. Kai Owen is amazing
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Gwyn and Rhys' conversations about their daughter are so honest and so hilarious, I laughed ever time.
    Any additional comments?

Flinx and Pip are always entertaining
Where does Flinx in Flux rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Middling, but due to the difference of listening to a favorite story as opposed to re-reading it. It wasn't a good transition for me.
What about Stefan Rudnickis performance did you like?
He did a good job with Flinx's moments of philosophy and kept it from being melodramatic. He did especially well with the somewhat crazy evil lady and the eco-terrorists.
    Any additional comments?
I have been reading Flinx stories forever, it seems, and I have enjoyed Flinx's maturation and the eventual resolution of his story. Flinx in Flux is a pivotal step in Flinx's life, so I recommend this to anyone who wasn't sure if they want to continue the saga. I especially like the aliens presented in this particular story, and the set up of "frontier" worlds. If you read the entire set of Flinx stories, it's obvious these were written over a long time and there are some loose ends that never get tied up, but that's a minor drawback because Alan Dean Foster is a great storyteller. He is also a great SF author. I love exploring new worlds with him. However, he has a tendency to pontificate, and it seems he especially likes Flinx to pontificate. I always enjoy this the first time or two that I read the passages, but I found listening to them a bit annoying. I just have to learn how to fast forward, I guess. This is the only reason I will hesitate to listen to one of his stories again.
    best read & re-read & listen ever! !!
I never tire of this series. it has everything but more than in any other series, the characters are real, not cliches and full of surprises. I am so glad this is a complete series since I can't seem to read/listen to just one . once started I have to go through all .
    amazing
Can't seem to put these stories down I read these stories years ago and find myself even more fasteated by them this time
    another favorite
    Any additional comments?
I love Alan Dean Foster's writing style. Its hard to go wrong with his stories.
    Flinx in Love
By now Flinx has become self sufficent and a loner, but in this installment in the series he learns how to love and allows himself to be loved. The long-tunnel pieces remind me about Fosters "Sentenced to Prism" in many ways. This is the book where Flinx gets his great challenge that will trouble him throughout the rest of the series. Fun Read

    Doesn't work...
It works on my Android phone but doesn't work on my Kindle and the free audio book is supposed to be included with the free book.
    Good sequel
it was full of interesting philosophy and moral dilemmas; but it was, at times, hard to follow. there were a few POV jumps which I had to rewind for several times because of the rate at which things develop towards the end of the story
    Shprt, but intense.
I'm an addict! Keep coming back for more. The storyline has me hooked. On to the next!
    Good story, bad message
I can't say what ruined this book for me without also ruining the ending. Either the author wrote himself into a hole and had to use the duex ex machina to get out, or he has some really twisted views on government and power.

author lost focus, rescinded story with metaphors. did not end story, instead gave the review of a student in chemistry or earth science that had fell asleep during class in metaphysics, entertaining relativity. A C+ for class participation. Reader, writer, wrong.
A Great First Book In A Terribly Average Trilogy
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No; I would've liked to say it was but... no. It was not well-spent time. While Reader (the first book in the trilogy) was quite enjoyable, the other two were boring, confusing, and incredibly repetitive.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would've stuck to Ambra Dawn's POV, rewrite that atrocious romantic plot device that was Writer, and made it into a story of a semi-omnipotent girl on the path to self destruction. If you've only listened to Reader, you might think this is where the story will lead you but... I'm afraid I must shatter your dreams.
What about Maria Marquiss performance did you like?
Her performance in Reader and Maker was very good; she conveys Ambra's emotional state so well I could not help but be completely enthralled by her painful journey. I felt it.
