meh.

just not that good. tagline for this could read 'an exceedingly dull romp through time' two guys bounce through time, hitting all the high-spots in history, but never with enough happening to make it interesting. at all. seriously. not interesting at all. when the climax in the story comes, it induces a yawn and some gratitude that the book must be coming to an end.

the narrator gives it the college try, but without much to work with, he comes off as trying too hard. don't waste your time or credit.

i suppose this book might be interesting to very young readers, or if it were still 1952 and time travel were a brand new idea in fiction. but it ain't.

Difficult listen

I'm only a few chapters in but this has been the most difficult to understand of any of my audio books. Is it the narrators diction? Is it his technique? Is it the sound engineers? It just seems that the end of words and sentences just drop off and I find myself having to up the volume to an uncomfortable level to make sure that I'm not missing anything. Make sure you have a sample listen before you purchase to make sure you can tolerate it. I like Jack McDevitt's work just not this narration.

Staccato Steams of Simple Sentences

I made the mistake of listening to this after an elegant piece of literature (The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet). The story line is extremely simple bedded in a rambling series of excursions into the past to participate in first-person experiences straight out of a textbook (civil rights march, Ben Franklin, Greek figures, presidents, authors, etc.) This is good fourth grade entertainment. I did manage to make it through the book, but the never-ending series of 'he said' and 'she said' combined with lusterless reading made it a trial.

Terrible narration

What disappointed you about Time Travelers Never Die?

The narration was simply awful. I should have believed the other reviews and not wasted my credit!

Regarding the story itself: I found myself unable to care about the characters or what became of them, and the disjointed forays into various historical moments were not at all compelling. The few scenes that had the possibility to engage my interest were suddenly dropped and, without warning, we were elsewhere.

At Last Some Action!

The first Cobra trilogy was OK but realy didn't have much action. It was good to listen to but lacked real action. This trilogy has a very easy to listen to format with action and drama. Very Good It keeps your attention for hours.

Zahn writes a good audiobook.

Some fiction books work really well as audiobooks. This series by Timothy Zahn is very good as an audiobook for several reasons. First, the plot is engaging without being overly complicated. That means you don't get lost in dozens of characters or multiple intertwining subplots. I do like that kind of book when I'm reading -- I read in a quiet room with few distractions. But I tend to listen to audiobooks when I'm also doing other things, like driving or jogging, so I want it to be exciting, unpredictable, and fun, with a few characters I get to know very, very well. This series fits that bill just fine.

The performance was good, too. I found the multiple accents to be a bit distracting, but they seem to fit the story.

Best of the bunch

I may be generous in my assessment of this book but I felt it was the best of the "JAG in Space" series to date (4 in the series). All of the novels follow the same formula - some action at the beginning with a tragedy of sorts, followed by a prolonged court room drama. Apart from the fact that the action occurs in space the novels really aren't science fiction. Don't bother with the book if you want hard sci fi.

The books roughly follow the experiences and tensions of a junior ship's officer with collateral 'legal officer' duty. In this book (more than the others) the tension seems more realistic because the protagonist is the instigator of the court martial procedings and so has a more vested interest in the outcome. That makes the tension and concern seem more plausible than in other books.While the consequences of going against more senior officers do not materialise in this book (but are implied to become manifest in book four), the real concern that they could and that the court room drama could become "career defining" make this a book worth listening to if that is your 'cup ot tea'.

The small things that are observed in court including the lawyer tricks add to the overall interest in the developing character of the protagonist but the arm wrestle between prosecution and defense should have been a bit meatier.

Naval Law

This story (series) could take place in the past, present or future time. I think that is what makes it interesting, people and their behaviour and problems are the same and Jack Campbell's story is a good example. This is not a war type military Sci Fi but is a timeless story of human behavior and military leadership. The military law is interesting and the USS. Michaelson's legal officer Lt Sinclair is growing into his job, in this second book of the series. The first part of the story has some space action and an explosion on the ship when it returns to base. The second half of the book deals with naval law and a court marshal trial. If you enjoy court room drama you will enjoy this book. Nick sullivan did a good job narrating the story. I enjoyed the JAG T.V. series and find this series equally enjoyable.

Writers in the Sky

This particular writer, Jack Campbell, has shown great flexibility in his books. The central theme is space: Flight in space, Living in space, Fighting in space. Now we have lawyers in space. He has developed all with attention to detail, characters of substance, and "you're bad, I'm good, and I'm going to eliminate you from my space" action.

Imaginative with a serious lesson

A fitting ending to the mode series, DoOon Mode does take several disturbing situations from the previous books even further. If you do not like where the other books are going then this book is not for you. Although they switched narrators from the other three books in the series, Natalie Ross was so good it didn't take long to get used to the change.

Its what you expect, and thats not a bad thing.

I was hovering between 3-4 stars on this one, then realized i was looking forward to getting the next book enough for it to be a 4 star.

The narration started off a bit iffy, but quickly improved. The "vampire" angle has been approached with an original take, and I enjoyed that. Its becoming hard to find good "Gothic" Sci-fi/fantasy lately without wading through masses of poorly written erotic chic-lit with the cover a cross between Fabio and Boris karloff.

This is as advertised. A Military/vampire hunter theme, centered around a single likable character, written almost in a Horatio Hornblower fashion. All good things in my opinion.

Post Apocalyptic, vampires, traitors, corrupt politicians, guns and battles there is something for everyone if you don't mind your fantasy novels pushing the bounds of credulity (Oddly enough, some people want more realism in their fantasy novels.)

I enjoyed it, and i especially enjoy the fact that its 7 books, aka no waiting on the next one.

Vampire Earth 101

I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT

Lots of different elements in this book make for an interesting concept. A western with vampires and aliens. Knight says this is the second book he wrote and the first to get published. I wanted to like it as the competing subjects matters, seem interesting when you think about it. I also like that the story takes place in the Ozarks, where I live. My town is even mentioned as a border town. Unfortunately, it does read like a first attempt. The above phrase happens often, a character knows something is going to happen, but he can not explain why he knows. This is a novice way of getting around difficult situations. The world building, which should have been the best part of the book, was done through lecture. It was like sitting in a college class listening to a professor describe Vampire Earth 101. I don't want to be told, I want to be shown.

THEIR BRAINS ARE AT THE TAIL END, KIND OF LIKE THINNER HERE.

In different places we see glimpses of Knight's imagination. He has the ideas to put together a top notch novel or series, it is just a shame a publisher or editor did not force him to work harder and longer to come up with it. Hopefully, like many other writers have done, he will get better and better through experience. Sometimes getting published or popular early in your career can be the worst thing to happen in the long run. It could stifle his growth as a writer.

As far as the narrator, I don't know if it was him or just the way it was written, but at the end of each sentence where these long pauses. The result was to make the book sound like a child's letter. Hi, how are you.

Some authors write prose that speaks so distinctly that it needs no embellishment from a narrator. Silverberg is such an author, and so Rudnicki, being one of those no-frills narrators who basically acts as a conduit for the listener, is an ideal choice for narrator. His performance is understated but compelling and it is that understated nature of his reading that is largely responsible for his appeal. Rudnicki is not going to dazzle you with his range of voices or other vocal trickery; instead, he keeps things basic, and for the most part just conveys the author's text and keeps out of the way, making listening to an audiobook read by him akin to reading the book yourself.

Some folks just know how to tell a story. And when you get two natural-born storytellers like Silverberg and Rudnicki together on the same project, the result is quite an unforgettable journey.

Superb

I read this book shortly after it's first publication so it's a great pleasure hearing it in audio form. I only need to comment on it's superb, expert narration. Flawless.

a perfect listen

this is one of my all-time favourite fantasy books so i was delighted to see it on audible. as expected, i thoroughly enjoyed it, a magical listen and very well narrated. please can we have the other Majipoor books soon!

Magic!

A penetrating and original re-visitation of the classsic hero's quest. A dreamlike and magical journey through Majipor, world like no other. The narrators deep chocolate tone is perfect and only serves to broaden the listeners pleasure.

This is not Fantasy, nor Sci-Fi, rather a genre all of its own, perhaps Jungian is the world. The only comparison I dare to consider is the work of the British writer Christopher Priest.

Great story, compulsive narrative - highly recommended.

A dreamy stroll down memory lane.

Really good cyberpunk

Walter Jon Williams was one of the best authors of the cyberpunk genre. This is an excellent story and as with most cyber punk it is more focused on the story and the world with seriously flawed, often tragic characters. This novel has a lot of attitude and action.

The only down side is that the voice of the narrarator didn't match what I envisioned for the main character, but that is a personal choice. The narrarator took some getting used to but once I did I enjoyed the audiobook, although I have to admit I think I enjoyed reading it a little bit more. it is still worth a credit if you like this type of book.

Don't bother just read the book

What other book might you compare Voice of the Whirlwind to and why?

In the same genre as Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. Near Future neo noir cyberpunk.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator was horrible, bad accents, poor timing, lousy inflection. One of the worst science fiction audiobooks I have listened to and it all relates back to the performance.

This is one of my favorite books and I downloaded it planning to listen at work as I haven't read it in a couple years. The performance was so bad I just couldn't do it. Think of watching Arnold Schwatzengger do Hamlet, that was the level of the performance.

A good enough book that didn't grab me

Steward is a clone, the clone of a man who spent years as a member of a military polycorp called Coherent Light. The original, or "alpha," was murdered, and the clone, or "beta," is determined to find out who and why.

Unfortunately, he's been revived with fifteen years of memory missing. Nor is this an accident. It's a deliberate choice his alpha made, and chose not to explain. Steward has a lot of information to recover before he can hope to complete his mission, and every step of the way is dangerous. He's chasing through the solar system, one space habitat after another, and the history he missed includes the arrival of a significantly more advanced alien species known as the Powers.

It's a well-written story, with good plot and good characters, as you'd expect of Walter Jon Williams. Unfortunately, unlike many other Williams works, this one just didn't really connect for me.

a bit disappointing

I have loved most of the books written by Anne McCaffrey, but this one didn't live up to my expectations.

For one thing, I needed notes to try to keep up with the multiple characters, places, ships, etc. There are also several sub-plots that are left hanging until the next book or two.

I also felt the story jumped around in locations and I found it hard keeping track of the separate stories within the story.

Boy, I read the whole Incarnations of Immortality series and loved it! What rich writing! I expected more of the same from this series but could not even get through Part 1. It just ho-hummed along. The narration was flat, the story was flat. Flat, flat, flat. Narration was like listening to the reading of an instructional manual.

Incomplete but Good

There is lots of physics and plains theory in the book, but it has a good story line and characters. ** Be warned that this book is incomplete and you will need to get the other Mode books to get the entire story. There are also discussions of sex with under aged girls, rape, and suicide so be warned (All the same things teens experience so it should come to no shock to many).** Piers Anthony writes good stories that tie in very well if you like long epic or characters popping in and out so this is a good book.

Story excellent but much too perverted.

I would have given the story 5 stars - it is imaginative and makes you think - especially the last couple chapters.

However, the main character is 14, yet there are strong sexual themes surrounding her. I found this very disturbing. Also, sex or the female body was brought up every 5 minutes it seemed! Yet.. I have yet to figure out what the main male character even looks like. I don't think he was ever fully described.

I *highly* discourage this to young readers.

Also, the main female lead is definitely "emo" at the beginning. She doesn't stay that way, thankfully.

All that said... I am still going to get the sequel.
