Movieing On - Movies from 1999 or Earlier

There are few things in the artistic world that frustrate me as much as movies that aren’t quite movies. I’m sure you know the type. It’s like you’ve got your hands on a script, a director, a handful of actors, a production company and all the hardware you need, but never let any of the actors rehearse with each other. You then send the finished product to an editor who’s never read the script and doesn’t know what the movie is about before they hand it in turn to marketing, who try to down-play the entire “Everybody kills themselves in the end of the movie” angle…

Movieing On has come around to Vincent Gallo’s quasi-self-biographical movie Buffalo ’66. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Christmas is coming up, so why not do a christmas-themed movie? That’s what we asked ourselves, and we couldn’t come up with a good answer to that question … so we did a christmas movie.

Showdown in Little Tokyo is a 1991 action film. It features Brandon Lee in his first American film role, starring alongside Dolph Lundgren. In this film set in Los Angeles, two police officers (Johnny Murata and Sgt. Chris Kenner, respectively) attempt to take down a Yakuza drug operation. The tone of the movie follows the traditional buddy cop formula.

There’s a perverse kind of justice in a movie that already in the title gives a suggestion for what kind of a rating you could give it. The moon is a roundish type of thing, so that’s a zero, and by following “zero” with “zero two”, one would assume this means point zero two. So two hundreths of a point.

Thankfully, the movie was much better than that. Actually, quite a lot better than that, if we’re comparing our rating to 0.02, but … yeah, have a listen and find out how we enjoyed the 1969 sci-fi classic, Moon Zero Two.

It’s a lovely movie. It really is. Hugh Grant, Julia Roberts, Rhys Ifans and a cameo by Dylan Moran, all wrapped in a boy-gets-girl-boy-loses-girl-boy-gets-girl-boy-loses-girl-boy-no-longer-wants-girl-boy-changes-his-mind-boy-gets-girl narrative … What’s there not to love?!

This week on Movieing On, a French movie! To some, that would be all the description they need – but there’s more to it. It’s a Godard movie, which says a lot to the film buffs out there. He divides movie watchers all over the world, and I’ve never ever heard a single person talking about any of his movies as “Well, it .. it’s okay, I suppose. Nothing special.”

It’s interesting to contrast Roger Ebert’s perspective on this movie with a 41 year separation, how it changes as he’s gone through the entire 70s, 80s, and 90s of film.
