This Sunday we begin our Advent journey with The Power of Hope as we wait expectantly for the promised One.

What is hope? An abstract idea? A feeling? Is it the same as faith?

Hope is a sense that things are going to be great or get better. It is desire or longing for things to go our way.

But in what do we place our hope? Or in whom? Well placed hope will change our priorities and motivate us to live differently.

This Advent season as always, we place our hope in the coming promised Lord of Righteousness.

James covers a lot of good instruction in his short letter. This week we’re wrapping up our series with James in chapter 5 as he wraps up his instruction and gives a few final encouragements.

Throughout the chapter, James talks about prayer. Pray in faith. Pray for each other. Confess, forgive, and pray together.

As we reflect not only on chapter 5 but all of James’ letter, we will better understand how to examine our hearts and make positive steps toward putting on our grown-up faith.

Pride, selfishness, and jealousy were major causes of these battles. These not only put us at odds with other believers, they are an attempt to lift ourselves to the same level with God.

James gives us a solution that comes with three promises. In James 4 we learn these three promises and find real freedom from bondage through humility.

Big Idea: Humble yourself, draw near to God, and do what you know is right.

In the first chapter of James, we learned that for our faith to grow and mature we will face trials and temptations. We can keep a joyful attitude through struggles because there is purpose in them.

Remaining faithful to God’s Word also grows our faith. It takes both hearing and doing what God’s Word says. Knowledge and Action.

In chapter two, James moves into practical application of living our faith. He begins with the command to stop showing favoritism.

In this passage, we will see that favoritism is an outcome of judging others. We will call favoritism what it really is and find a better way to approach our differences with others.
