MTR Network Main Feed

It's a TV show(s) inside of a TV show. Once again we're left asking "How can you not love Legends of Tomorrow?" Charlie "saved" the Legends by resuming her role as one of the Fates and putting the Legends on TV shows that gave each Legend what they "wanted". Of course that doesn't go as planned because when do the Legends ever behave like little good boys and girls? Once again sounding like a broken record, this episode does a great job of balancing the ridiculousness (Ultimate Buds!!!) with the serious (Ava remembering seeing Sara die, Behrad remembering he's dead on every timeline and John making a sacrifice so Astra can be happy). This show is so great.

We're finally back with a proper Character Corner. We get back to our roots with this episode. We're not doing Creator Spotlight runs or a Comic Book Book Club. No this time we're just going to take one character and tackle their history and we go for a big one: The Hulk.

Created in May of 1962 (seriously, we didn't plan on doing this episode in May, it just happened), Bruce Banner/The Hulk is an interesting character from Marvel in that his first appearance is is own solo book (Incredible Hulk #1). A lot of other big names from Marvel & DC got their first starts not in their own solo books, but as part of anthology series. The Hulk also built on the horror comics base of Marvel at that time. Modeled after Frankenstein's monster as well as Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde, what we see with The Hulk is a character that is written at his best when writers focus more on the horror as well as the internal psychological struggle between Banner & Hulk. Yes, "Hulk Smash" and "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry" are the things that most people focus on but in this episode we look at the runs that really highlight the various personalities and internal war between Banner & Hulk.

Episode note: We don't get too much into Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk. We will do a separate episode on Walters when we get closer to the Disney+ show coming out.

Key Issues:

* Incredible Hulk #1 - First appearance of Bruce Banner/Hulk, Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, Betty Ross and Rick Jones the universal side kick

* Tales to Astonish #62 - First appearance of Samuel Sterns aka The Leader

* Tales to Astonish #90 - First appearance of Abomination

* Incredible Hulk #141 - First appearance of Doc Samson

* the Incredible Hulk #181 - First full appearance of Wolverine

* The Defenders

* Bill Mantlo's Run: Starts with Incredible Hulk #245

* Crossroads of Eternity (#300 - #313)

* Peter David's 12 Year run

* Incredible Hulk #331 - 400

* JoeFixIt - Incredible Hulk #347

* Incredible Hulk The End - Peter David's "final" Hulk story

* Planet Hulk

* World War Hulk

* World War Hulks

* Civil War 2

* Jason Aaron's Incredible Hulk Run

* Al Ewings' The Immortal Hulk

Turn Off The Lights For "The Vast of Night"

If you like audio plays and ever wondered what it would look like if someone who loved them made a film, then Amazon Prime's latest, "The Vast of Night" a tailor-made fit for you.

This sci-fi story combines the best of intimate character byplay, an atmospheric intensity uniquely suited to a 1950 small town setting, and the driving need to know. It's a story worthy of a campfire and a starless night.

The "Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" Had A Love Child

"did you hear that sound?"

This beings with a classic B-movie starting point. A young woman Fay (Sierra McCormick) is the switchboard operator who meets up with radio DJ Everett (Jake Horowitz) and swaps snappy conversation and shares random facts as they each head to work.

The town's all gathered in the school gym for the basketball game. So the two walk through empty streets. It sets the right tone and look. It's a dark foggy night. If something odds going to happen, well the right two inquisitive minds are paying attention.

Set at the dawn of the race into space and when it wasn't unheard of for someone to call in sightings of unidentified flying objects, "The Vast of Night" is the best kind of a riddle wrapped in a mystery.

Listen as Ro discusses "The Vast of Night" with Joi about why it should make your watch queue.

We're not gonna let the latest news from WB get us down (Ruby Rose exiting Batwoman and WB caves to the lunatics with the "Snydercut"). We'll save all that for next week's Mailbag episode. Instead we're going to focus on the greatness that is Legends of Tomorrow. Get in losers, we're going looming.

* No one can waste 24 hours of immortality like the Legends

* Gary tries the "save the day" and fails cause...Gary

* Nice to  see Amy Louise Pemberton in the flesh again as Gideon

* Zari and John finally cut through the sexual tension (Nate stays losing)

* Another week, another episode of the Legends parodying pulp culture

As always, it's great to see this show balance ridiculous with the serious (lot of reflections on death this episode). It helps when its clear the cast really enjoys hanging out with each other.

Brainy and Lena are the dumbest smart people in the CW universe.  You both KNOW what Lex was like pre-crisis cause you have your memories-why in the HELL are you still trusting him?  Especially you Lena.  Big dummy.  Brainy and Nia being apart does not work for either of us.  Lena being this dense and stupid is exhausting to watch.   We also came up with a fool proof plan to incorporate Melissa Benoist's pregnancy seamlessly into the show-but it requires that Will comes back next season.

Apparently there are people that review Legends of Tomorrow seriously. We do not understand how that is possible. I mean they just did an episode where they hit every possible Frat/Sorority movie trope there is. HOW DO YOU TAKE THAT SERIOUSLY? This isn't a review, but an appreciation for greatness.

Our only real complaint is trying to figure out where they came up with that version of beer pong. I mean in the age of corona, beer pong is clearly dead but that won't keep us for thinking about the "good ole days"

The pandemic has cut this season of The Flash short which is a shame because this was a really good season. And all things considered, this finale made the best of the situation and put together a pretty solid finale that ends with the villain winning and some really interesting prospects for the next season.

* Eva as Mirror Master is going to give Barry and Team Flash all  kinds of problems. Add in her own team of dangerous female villains and we don't see an easy way out of this one for the team

* Gotta love how they let Danielle Panabaker be a part of this entire season through her pregnancy. Other shows have written off their female characters when an actress gets pregnant but Danielle not only directed an episode  but also had her character appear in more episodes than Carlos Valdes or Jesse L Martin

* We end the season with Barry still not having his powers at 100%. We have clues as to how he gets them back but this puts us in a really interesting position to start season 7

* There's still a lot of open threads that will be fun to explore:

* Barry's Powers

* What Eva really wants

* How do Iris, Kamilla and Singh escape the mirrorverse and what happened to Iris at the end?

* What is Bloodwork's long game? Kudos to the show  for making us give a shit about Bloodwork

* What's going on with Godspeed?

* When is Thawne going to return to fuck up Barry's life even more?

C'mon...how could Lex not have been masterminding stuff behind the scenes after Crises?  This entire latter half of the season stinks of his influence.  We discuss Lex's machinations, the impact of COVID-19 on the rest of the season, J'onn needing an on site love, and Kara being real damn dumb by not reactivating the anti-Luthor protocol in the Fortress after Lena tried to grab Myriad THE FIRST TIME!
