  • The Expanse S4 Episodes 7 - 10 - Super Tuesday Recap
First off, we apologize for the delay. We had a lot going on the last couple of months and we just couldn't get us all together to discuss the final 4 episodes of The Expanse Season 4. But much like the wait for Season 4, our review was worth it. For this episode we're joined by Rod from The Black Guy Who Tips and we talk about everything that goes down these last 4 episodes. And man is there a lot to talk about.

    * For once Holden isn't a complete idiot here and actually pulls everything together pretty well. Of course this is after finding out that Miller wasn't exactly Miller...until he was. Confused? Yes but it actually all ends up making sense
    * Amos is about that life. Chandra finds that out the hard way (Amos warned her). Murty THOUGHT he was about that life too until he sadly realizes too late that Amos is a completely different animal. We love Amos
    * We had a strong feeling Avasarala wasn't going to win this election but knowing what Marco is planning (or what he's done), Earth is in for a rude awakening without the woman who has been keeping them safe. And Bobbie does have terrible timing.
    * Ashford goes out like a champ. The Expanse is so good because of the political dynamics they've set up. Ashford starts off as a terrorist that you want nothing to deal with and in the end he's the man preaching that violence isn't the answer. It's sad to see him go but we're now excited to see how Drummer handles his death. Also, Naomi's son Felipe might just be a lost cause.

There's so much to discuss and love about season 4 of The Expanse. So strap in and give this episode a listen.

  • Birds of Prey Review: Harley Quinn & 'em - Movie Trailer Reviews
The first thing to realize about Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is that it’s not a Birds of Prey film but a Harley Quinn film. And that’s okay. As long as you come in knowing that, this film works (for the most part). Margot Robbie is great as Harley Quinn and is backed up of a cast of women that are solid (if not limited) in their roles. Best of all, this film has some of the best action/fight scenes of all the DC films. It really shows what DC can make when they give their films to directors who care about making films that respect their characters instead of making self righteous bullshit that claims to be “above” comic book films.

The only real problem with this film is the complete disrespect of Cassandra Cain. But we’ll talk more about that in detail in the spoiler review that will release after opening weekend. For now, listen to our non-spoiler review then go out and see this film. This is DC's second best film (right after Shazam!) and this is the type of film that DC makes that should make a bunch of money but probably won't.

  • Green Arrow Part 2 The Return of Oliver Queen - Character Corner #81

We’re back with part 2 of our Oliver Queen/Green Arrow Character Corner. We held off on it for a little bit so that we could record it after the final episode of CW’s Arrow. Watching Stephen Amell say goodbye as Oliver Queen while reading about Ollie’s return from death by writer Kevin Smith really complemented each other. It was fitting that Ollie’s return in the comics involved Hal Jordan as the Spectre as Arrow closes with Oliver being the Spectre himself.

Ollie’s return in the comics also sets up a clear difference between him and Bruce Wayne/Batman. It feels like the best stories with Oliver Queen always revolve around him being more grounded and emotionally connected than Bruce. We see Oliver struggle with finding the best ways to save his city while also keeping those around him, close. He struggles with the fact that he abandoned Connor at a young age, failed Roy and has a complex relationship with Dinah. There are ups and downs in this whole thing but it all sudden comes to an end with DC relaunching the character (and their entire line) with New 52. The first 3 volumes of the New 52 are...okay at best. They're not bad but they also completely ignore all of the character development that had been done previously with the character. Jeff Lemire's three volume run starting at volume 4 is pretty good but also feels like a set up for things that never come.

With the ups and downs of New 52, you can imagine we'd be a little skeptical of the Rebirth launch but the Green Arrow rebirth run by Benjamin Percy and others is absolutely fantastic. It does a good job of trying to tie in some of the pre-New 52 work with the New 52 stuff as well as finally reuniting Dinah and Ollie.

Give our episode a listen as we break it all down and wrap up our deep dive into Oliver Queen.

  • Supergirl S5E10 & 11 Review – Post Crisis Glow Up - Super Tuesday Recap
We were concerned prior to the Crisis event that the lead up lacked a link but, as one of our listeners pointed out, Supergirl decided to hold back to good stuff until after the cross over had concluded.  The fall out is massive, and the links are loud and clear.  We see Brainy unleashed, providing Jesse Rath with some amazing material to show off his acting range.   We get a sibling team up in Megan and Jesse Rath, last seen on screen by us in the U.S. version of Being Human.  J'onn creates an amazing superhero friend clubhouse (which leads us to wonder-what has Barry been doing with all that Harrison Wells cash on The Flash?).  Finally Winn returns, and Lex and Lena move forward with their separate agendas.  The show will be on break until February 17th when Supergirl returns!

  • Movie Review: The Rhythm Section
The Rhythm Section should've been the start of a great spy thriller franchise. With Blake Lively starring as a young woman hell bent on revenge and Jude Law as the embittered MI-6 agent willing to use her as bait and Sterling K. Brown as an ex-CIA turned rouge information broker looking to eliminate enemies and make a few coins on the side. Instead this film is a hot mess of shaky cam, shallow character development and shoddy scripting.

    The Premise:
Stephanie Parker's fallen into drugs and prostitution in the aftermath of her family's death in an airplane explosion. Stephanie feels guilty first because she skipped the flight that killed her family and second because she's the reason they were on that plane in the first place. When a journalist (Raza Jaffrey) shows up at the whorehouse this once bright college student now lives, claiming to have proof that her parent's death wasn't an accident Stephanie sets out to find the people responsible and kill them all.

    The Problem:
Based on the book - and screenplay - by Mark Burnell by the same name, The Rhythm Section lacks structure, depth and quite frankly a point worth reaching. It should've been tense and engaging to watch this woman battle her way back to fighting fit willing to do anything to avenge her family. It should've been engrossing to follow her from city to city hunting down the ones responsible for their deaths. Instead, Burnell's script fails to capitalize on it's own solid story to bring the audience into a world that makes sense.
Listen to Phenom and Ro discuss why it's a good idea to just rent A Simple Favor to see Blake Lively at her best. Then join them on premium for the spoiler chat and hear exactly what this ass backward story needed to not.

  • Arrow S8E10 Fadeout Review - Super Tuesday Recap
It's the end of an era. The Stephan Amell and the show that launched an another superhero comes to a close. The final episode of Arrow is full of fan service and payoffs for those who have watched this show for 8 seasons. Even better, it doesn't feel like the end but a new beginning. The Arrowverse Universe continues on strong.
Also...Thank You for finally giving Diggle his things.

  • Legends of Tomorrow S5E2 Review Meet The Legends - Super Tuesday Recap
The wait is over. The CW champ is back. Yes folks. Legends of Tomorrow is officially back. What can we say, we've missed this crazy group of misfits. What's always so great about Legends of Tomorrow is the blend of humor with the seriousness. The whole episode is ridiculous, with the documentary crew following the Legends around and the Legends acting ridiculous for the cameras. But in the background is the seriousness of Sara mourning because of the death of Oliver during Crisis. The show knows when to hit us with the humor while also giving us those serious and emotional moments. We also haven't forgotten about the disappearance of Zari and the show wastes no time addressing it. Just like the Arrow episode, we're starting to see some of the fallout from the changing timelines and merging of universes.
This season is clearly going to be ridiculous and we're here for it all.

  • Arrow S8E9 Review Green Arrow & The Canaries - Super Tuesday Recap
After Crisis we really had no idea what was going to be in store for us with the Arrowverse. We knew that combining all the earths and restarting the Multi-verse would have ramifications but who knew the back door pilot for Green Arrow & the Canaries would really lean into that? Gonna be honest, we were on the fence about covering this show next season but after this episode, to quote Rick & Morty: "You son of a bitch, I'm in".
Seriously, time travel, remembering the past and all the fall out that's gonna come from it...who wouldn't be in? Arrow spent 2 seasons building up Mia Queen and seeing her take over as the new Green Arrow is a great payoff. Not to mention bringing Laurel and Dinah in from the 2020 timeline gives us a pretty solid, all female core for this show. Add in the cliff hanger ending and well...what can we say, they got us for at least one seasons.

  • Black Critic Roundtable: Black Films of 2019
We're finally back with our much promised Black Critic Roundtable talking about the Black films and performances of 2019. Overall, 2019 was a pretty good year not just for films overall, but black films and performances. We start off our discussion with the obvious Oscar contender Black & Blue starring Tyrese tears. Just kidding. Although we have to give the marketing team credit for the boldness of their "For Your Consideration" emails for this movie.
While there are a lot of good movies and performances to talk about, one thing that did stand out to us is that we seem to be moving out of slave movies into "civil rights" movies. And while there is nothing wrong with films like Just Mercy, Clemency and others, it does make us wish we could get more variety in our films outside of just leaning on black pain, suffering and our struggle to overcome.
But sit back and listen as we talk about our favorite (and least favorite) Black films and performances of the last year. You can also get an early taste of our disdain for the Oscar nominations. We'll be back before the Oscars to talk about the horrendous nominations and our picks. Stay tuned.
