Chapter61

Pinocchio weeps uponlearning that the Lovely Maiden with Azure1 Hair is dead. He meets a Pigeon, who carries him to the seashore.He throws himself into the sea to go to the aid of his father As soon asPinocchio no longer felt the shameful2weight of the dog collar around his neck, he started to run acrossthe fields andmeadows3, andnever stopped till he came to the main road that was to take him to the Fairy'shouse.

　　When he reached it, he looked into thevalley far below him and there he saw the wood where unluckily he had met theFox and the Cat, and the talloak4tree where he had been hanged; but though he searched far andnear, he could not see the house where the Fairy with the azure Hair lived.

　　He became terribly frightened and,running as fast as he could, he finally came to the spot where it had oncestood.

　　The little house was no longer there. Inits place lay a small marbleslab5,which bore this sadinscription6:

　　HERE LIES THE LOVELY FAIRY WITH AZUREHAIR WHO DIED OF GRIEF WHEN ABANDONED BY HER LITTLE BROTHER PINOCCHIO The poorMarionette7was heartbroken at reading these words. He fell to the ground and,covering the cold marble with kisses, burst into bitter tears. He cried allnight, and dawn found him still there, though his tears had dried and onlyhard, drysobs8shook his wooden frame. But these were so loud that they could beheard by the far away hills.

　　皮诺乔一觉得脖子上那个丢脸的、硬绷绷的颈圈没有了，就撒腿穿过田野，一分钟也不停，一直来到通往仙女家的那条大道。
　　到了大道上，他低下头来看下面的草原。他极目远望，清楚地看到那座树林子，他当初就不幸在那里遇见了狐狸和猫；他清楚在看到兀立在许多树木之间的大橡树树梢，他当初就给套着脖子吊在那里摇来晃去。可他这里看，那里看，就是看不到天蓝色头发的美丽仙女的那座小房子。
　　这时候他感到不妙，马上使出最后的脚劲拼命跑起来，几分钟工夫就来到曾经有一座白房子的草地上，现在白房子没有了，原来是白房子的地方只有一小块大理石碑，石碑上用印刷体刻着如下几行字：

　　她因悲伤而溘然长逝。
　　木偶伤心地读完这几行字以后，该是怎么一种心情，就请诸位自己去想象了。他趴倒在地上，把那块大理石碑吻了成千遍，嚎啕大哭起来。他哭了整整一夜，到第二天早晨，到大白天还在哭，虽然眼泪早已哭干了。他哭得这样伤心这样响，周围所有的土岗子都接连发出了回声。

　　The best thing to do is to leave them in peace!“Were you awake or asleep when they came?" continued the Farmer.

　　"I was asleep," answeredPinocchio, "but they awakened me with their whisperings. One of them even cameto the door of the doghouse and said to me, `If you promise not to bark, wewill make you a present of one of the chickens for your breakfast.' Did youhear that? They had the audacity5to make such a proposition as that to me!

　　For you must know that, though I am avery wicked Marionette full of faults, still I never have been, nor ever shallbe,bribed6.""Fineboy!" cried the Farmer, slapping him on the shoulder in a friendly way."You ought to be proud of yourself. And to show you what I think of you, youare free from this instant! “And he slipped the dog collar from his neck.

And shakinghis head in a threatening manner, he seemed to say, "We’ll talk this overin a few minutes, my friends. “As soon as the four Weasels had talked things over,they went straight to the chicken coop which stood closet the doghouse. Diggingbusily with teeth and claws, they opened the little door and slipped in. Butthey were no sooner in than they heard the door close with a sharp bang.

　　The one who had done the trick wasPinocchio, who, not satisfied with that, dragged a heavy stone in front of it.That done, he started to bark. And he barked, as if he were a real watchdog:"Bow, wow, wow! Bow, wow! “The Farmer heard the loud barks and jumped outof bed.

　　Taking his gun, he leaped to the windowand shouted:

　　"What's the matter? “The thieves arehere," answered Pinocchio.

　　"Where are they? “In the chickencoop.""I'll come down in a second. “And, in fact, he was down in theyard in a twinkling and running toward the chicken coop.

　　He opened the door, pulled out theWeasels one by one, and, after tying them in a bag, said to them in a happyvoice:

　　"You're in my hands at last! I couldpunish you now, but I'll wait! In the morning, you may come with me to the innand there you'll make a fine dinner for some hungry mortal. It is too great anhonor for you, one you do not deserve; but, as you see, I am really a very kindand generous man and I am going to do this for you! “Then he went up toPinocchio and began to pet and caress3 him.

　　“就这么干的。我们和它合作得很好。你安静地睡你的觉吧，我们走以前，保证在狗屋上留下一只拔掉毛的肥鸡，给你明天当早饭吃。咱们讲明白啦？”

　　把门又给关上的正是皮诺乔。他关上门不算，为了保险起见，还在门前放了块大石头顶住它。
　　接着他叫起来，叫得就象一只看门狗：“汪，汪，汪，汪。”
　　农民一听见汪汪叫，马上跳下床，拿起枪，把头探出窗子问道：
　　“什么事？”
　　“来小偷了！”皮诺乔回答。
　　“在哪儿？”
　　“在鸡埘里。”
　　“我马上下来。”
　　真的，就说一声“阿门”那么点工夫，农民已经下来了。他赶紧走进鸡埘，把四只鸡貂全给捉住，塞进布口袋，心花怒放地对它们说：

The Marionette2,being no exception to this rule, slept on peacefully for a few hours till wellalong toward midnight, when he was awakened by strange whisperings and stealthysounds coming from the yard. He stuck his nose out of the doghouse and saw fourslender, hairy animals. They were Weasels, small animals very fond of both eggsand chickens. One of them left her companions and, going to the door of thedoghouse, said in a sweet voice:

　　"Good evening, Melampo. “My name isnot Melampo," answered Pinocchio.

　　"Who are you, then? “I am Pinocchio.“What are you doing here? “I’m the watchdog. “But where is Melampo? Where isthe old dog who used to live in this house? “He died this morning. “Died? Poorbeast! He was so good! Still, judging by your face, I think you, too, are agood-natured dog. “I beg your pardon, I am not a dog! “What are you, then? “Iam a Marionette. “Are you taking the place of the watchdog? “I’m sorry to saythat I am. I'm being punished. “Well, I shall make the same terms with you thatwe had with the dead Melampo. I am sure you will be glad to hear them. “Andwhat are the terms? “This is our plan: We'll come occasionally, as in the past,to pay a visit to this henhouse, and we'll takeaway eight chickens. Of these,seven are for us, and one for you, provided, of course, that you will make believeyou are sleeping and will not bark for the Farmer. “Did Melampo really dothat?" asked Pinocchio.

　　When he reached the yard in front of thehouse, he flung him to the ground, put a foot on his neck, and said to himroughly: "It is late now and it's time for bed.

　　Tomorrow we'll settle matters. In themeantime, since my watchdog died today, you may take his place and guard my henhouse.“No sooner said than done. He slipped a dog collar around Pinocchio's neck and tightened4 it so that it would not come off. A long iron chain was tied tothe collar.

　　The other end of the chain was nailed tothe wall.

　　"If tonight it should happen torain," said the Farmer, “you can sleep in that little doghouse near-by,where you will find plenty of straw for a soft bed. It has beenMelampo's bedfor three years, and it will be good enough for you. And if, by any chance, anythieves should come, be sure to bark! “After this last warning, the Farmer wentinto the house and closed the door and barred it.

　　Poor Pinocchio huddled5close to the doghouse more dead than alive from cold, hunger, andfright. Now and again he pulled andtugged6at the collar which nearly choked him and cried out in a weakvoice:

　　"I deserve it! Yes, I deserve it! Ihave been nothing but atruant7and a vagabond. I have never obeyed anyone and I have always doneas I pleased. If I were only likes many others and had studied and worked and stayedwith my poor old father, I should not find myself here now, in this field andin the darkness, taking the place of farmer’s watchdog. Oh, if I could startall over again!

　　But what is done can't beundone8, andI must be patient! “After this little sermon to himself, which came from the verydepths of his heart, Pinocchio went into the doghouse and fell asleep.

　　农民吩咐完，就进屋把门关上，还用粗链子拴好，于是空场上就剩可怜的皮诺乔一个人趴着，又冷，又饿，又怕，半死不活的。他不断生气地把手插到勒住他喉咙的颈圈里，哭着说：
　　“我这是活该！……真倒霉，我这是活该！我任性，只想闲逛……我只想听坏朋友的话，因此总是失去幸福。如果我是个好孩子，像别的孩子一样，如果我想读书想劳动，如果我同我的可怜爸爸一起在家，那我这会儿就不会在这儿田野当中，做一只狗给一个农民看门了。噢，我能重新做人就好了！……可现在迟了，没法子，我只好忍耐！”

　　"Dear little Glowworm, will you setme free?" "Poor little fellow!" replied the Glowworm, stopping tolook at him with pity. "How came you to be caught in this trap?" "Istepped into this lonely field to take a few grapes and--""Are thegrapes yours?" "No." "Who has taught you to take thingsthat do not belong to you?” I was hungry." "Hunger, my boy, is noreason for taking something which belongs to another. “It’s true, it'strue!" cried Pinocchio in tears. "I won’t do it again. “Just then,the conversation was interrupted by approaching footsteps. It was the owner ofthe field, who was coming on tiptoes to see if, by chance, he had caught theWeasels which had been eating his chickens.

　　Great was his surprise when, on holdingup his lantern, he saw that, instead of a Weasel, he had caught a boy!

　　"Ah, you little thief!" saidthe Farmer in an angry voice. "So, you are the one who steals my chickens!“Not I! No, no!" cried Pinocchio,sobbing3bitterly.

　　"I came here only to take a very fewgrapes. “He who steals grapes may very easily steal chickens also.

Take my word for it, I'll give you a lesson that you'll rememberfor a long while. “He opened the trap, grabbed the Marionette by the collar,and carried him to the house as if he were a puppy.

　　诸位可以想象，皮诺乔当然大哭大叫，大叫饶命。可是哭也好叫也好，全都没用，因为这儿周围看不见房子，路上一个走过的人也没有。
　　这时候天黑了。

　　等他打外套底下掏出灯来，看见捉到的不是鸡貂，而是个孩子，他惊奇极了。
　　“哈哈，小偷！”农民生气地说，“这么说，我的鸡都是你偷的？”
　　“我没偷，我没偷！”皮诺乔抽抽嗒嗒地说，“我本来只想采两串葡萄！……”

Chapter 55

　　"Is he dead, I wonder?" said Pinocchio, rubbing hishandstogether happily. Without a moment's hesitation,he started to step over him,but he had just raised one legwhen the Serpent shot up like a spring and theMarionettefell head over heels backward. He fell so awkwardlythat his headstuck in the mud, and there he stood withhis legs straight up in the air.

　　At the sight of the Marionette kicking and squirminglike a youngwhirlwind, the Serpent laughed so heartily and so long that at last he burst anartery and died on the spot.

　　Pinocchio freed himself from his awkward position and once morebegan to run in order to reach the Fairy'shouse before dark. As he went, thepangs of hunger grewso strong that, unable to withstand them, he jumped intoafield to pick a few grapes that tempted him. Woe to him!

Chapter 54

　　What was the matter? An immense Serpent lay stretchedacross theroad--a Serpent with a bright green skin,fiery eyes which glowed and burned,and a pointed tailthat smoked like a chimney.

　　How frightened was poor Pinocchio! He ran backwildly for half amile, and at last settled himself atop aheap of stones to wait for the Serpentto go on his wayand leave the road clear for him.

　　He waited an hour; two hours; three hours; but theSerpent was alwaysthere, and even from afar one could see the flash of his red eyes and thecolumn of smokewhich rose from his long, pointed tail.

　　Pinocchio, trying to feel very brave, walked straight upto him andsaid in a sweet, soothing voice:

　　"I beg your pardon, Mr. Serpent, would you be sokind as to stepaside to let me pass?"He might as well have talked to a wall. TheSerpentnever moved.

　　Once more, in the same sweet voice, he spoke:

　　"You must know, Mr. Serpent, that I am going homewhere myfather is waiting for me. It is so long since Ihave seen him! Would you mindvery much if I passed?"He waited for some sign of an answer to hisquestions,but the answer did not come. On the contrary, the greenSerpent, whohad seemed, until then, wide awake and fullof life, became suddenly very quietand still. His eyesclosed and his tail stopped smoking.

Chapter 53

Freedfrom prison, Pinocchio sets out to return to the Fairy;but on the way he meetsa Serpent and later is caught in a trapFancy the happiness of Pinocchio onfinding himself free!

　　Without saying yes or no, he fled from the city and setout on theroad that was to take him back to the house ofthe lovely Fairy.

　　It had rained for many days, and the road was so muddythat, attimes, Pinocchio sank down almost to his knees.

　　But he kept on bravely.

　　Tormented by the wish to see his father and his fairy sister withazure hair, he raced like a greyhound. As heran, he was splashed with mud evenup to his cap.

　　"How unhappy I have been," he said to himself."Andyet I deserve everything, for I am certainly very stubbornand stupid!I will always have my own way. I won'tlisten to those who love me and who havemore brainsthan I. But from now on, I'll be different and I'll try tobecome amost obedient boy. I have found out, beyondany doubt whatever, that disobedientboys are certainlyfar from happy, and that, in the long run, they alwaysloseout. I wonder if Father is waiting for me. Will Ifind him at the Fairy's house?It is so long, poor man,since I have seen him, and I do so want his love andhiskisses. And will the Fairy ever forgive me for all I havedone? She who hasbeen so good to me and to whom Iowe my life! Can there be a worse or moreheartlessboy than I am anywhere?"As he spoke, he stopped suddenly, frozenwith terror.

　　Another burst of laughter, even more impertinent thanthe first, washeard in the quiet field.

　　"Well," cried the Marionette, angrily this time,"mayI know, Mr. Parrot, what amuses you so?""I am laughing at thosesimpletons who believeeverything they hear and who allow themselves to becaught soeasily in the traps set for them.""Do you, perhaps, meanme?""I certainly do mean you, poor Pinocchio--you whoare such alittle silly as to believe that gold can be sownin a field just like beans orsquash. I, too, believed thatonce and today I am very sorry for it. Today (buttoo late!)I have reached the conclusion that, in order to comeby moneyhonestly, one must work and know how to earnit with hand or brain.""Idon't know what you are talking about," said theMarionette, who wasbeginning to tremble with fear.

　　"Too bad! I'll explain myself better," said the Parrot.

　　"While you were away in the city the Fox and the Catreturnedhere in a great hurry. They took the four goldpieces which you have buried andran away as fast as the wind.

　　If you can catch them, you're a brave one!"Pinocchio's mouthopened wide. He would not believethe Parrot's words and began to dig awayfuriously at theearth. He dug and he dug till the hole was as big ashimself,but no money was there. Every penny was gone.

　　In desperation, he ran to the city and went straight to thecourthouse to report the robbery to the magistrate.

　　这时候田野上静悄悄的，他又听见了笑声，这一次笑得比上次更放肆。

　　“不管怎么说，”皮诺乔发疯似在大叫，“你告诉我，没教养的鹦鹉，你笑什么？”

　　“我不懂你说些什么，”木偶说，这时他已经吓得发起抖来了。

　　“没法子！我只好说得更明白些，”鹦鹉往下说。“你要知道，当你在城里的时候，狐狸和猫回到这块地里来，挖走了金币，像阵风似地溜掉了。如今要追上它们，已经办不到啦！”

　　皮诺乔就那么张大了嘴闭不拢来。他不愿意相信鹦鹉的话，开始用手指甲挖浇过水的土。他挖啊，挖啊，挖了很深很深的一个大坑，连一个稻草堆都可以放进去了，可就是找不到金币。

　　木偶于是绝望了，回到城里，马上到法庭去向法官告状，说两个贼偷走了他的钱。
