Isn’t it a time for a fresh start? This time of year many are consumed by feelings of failure and regret as they reflect back on the past year. So many of our plans were unaccomplished. So many mistakes were made. As the music of the holiday celebrations fade, so do our spirits. But New Year’s is also a time for new beginnings! This is a time for fresh starts and second chances! Let us refuse the regrets and instead resolve to move forward and the joy that comes from making healthy changes!

Theme: Are we willing to be the Lord’s servant?

It is an often overlooked point that Mary said “Yes.” She was freely willing to be a servant of the Lord. Though she understood that being a young unmarried virgin and pregnant would surely bring hardships, judgment, and disgrace, she valued living into her calling from the Lord over comfort and idealistic dreams of a perfect life. Are we also willing? As the Day of the Lord draws near, we will increasingly be called upon to make sacrifices and difficult choices for the sake of the coming Kingdom. The road will not be easy. Will we, like Mary, yield to the Spirit saying, “Let it be with me according to your word”?

Are you baptized in the Spirit or in tradition? Being disciples of Jesus is not about culture, history, heritage, or family expectations. It is about receiving Jesus personally as Savior and Lord. It must be a personal faith in which we receive the presence of the Spirit into our lives. No one else can choose this for us and it is not enough to simply claim a connection with God through family or cultural heritage. Time is ever running out. Have YOU chosen Jesus today? Long ago John pointed to Jesus as the strong Savior, calling for all to repent and be baptized. His call still rings true today!

This is a complex prayer from Isaiah. On the one hand, he can’t wait for God’s Kingdom to come down. On the other hand, he laments over the sinfulness of God’s children in spite of the many mighty acts they’ve witnessed. They, like we, should know better. In the end, he acknowledges that God is the Master Potter and we are in His hands. His prayer: Oh, may God mold us and shape us so that we are prepared for the coming Kingdom! As we await the Second Coming of Christ, He is indeed preparing us for that return. Advent is a season to prepare.

On this last Sunday before the season of Advent we will learn about making the most of the Season through its true meanings, symbols, and devotional practices. It is a season to prepare for Christ’s return as a conquering King at the end of time, even as we prepare to celebrate His first arrival as a lowly baby in Bethlehem. We cannot know when this Second Coming will be. So, let us be prepared every day!
