Nicole Brown Simpson was born on May 19, 1959, in Frankfurt, West Germany, to a German mother and an American father who served in the military. She spent much of her childhood in Southern California, where she grew up in a middle-class family with her three siblings. Nicole was known for her beauty, charisma, and warm personality. After graduating from high school, she worked as a waitress at a Beverly Hills nightclub, where she would meet the man who would forever alter the course of her lifeāfootball superstar O.J. Simpson.
Throughout their marriage, the couple was often seen as an image of glamour and success. They had two children together, Sydney and Justin, and lived a life of luxury in Brentwood, an upscale neighborhood in Los Angeles. Nicole appeared to be the quintessential beautiful and devoted wife, often accompanying O.J. to Hollywood events and sports-related gatherings. However, behind the scenes, their marriage was plagued by turmoil and abuse.
Despite the public image of a happy marriage, Nicole suffered from repeated domestic abuse at the hands of O.J. Simpson. Friends and family later recounted incidents of physical and emotional violence that she endured throughout their relationship. The most publicized instance of abuse occurred on New Year's Day in 1989 when police responded to a call at their home. Nicole had been beaten so severely that she was left bruised and battered. In a haunting 911 call, she was heard screaming for help, and when officers arrived, she ran outside, fearing for her life.
O.J. was arrested and pleaded no contest to spousal battery, receiving a light sentence of probation, counseling, and community service. Despite this, Nicole remained in the marriage for a few more years before ultimately divorcing him in 1992, citing irreconcilable differences. Even after the divorce, their relationship remained volatile, with continued confrontations and disturbing encounters.
On the night of June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, were brutally murdered outside her Brentwood condominium. Nicole was stabbed multiple times in a gruesome attack, with her body left near the entrance of her home. Goldman, a restaurant waiter who had come to return a pair of Nicoleās motherās glasses, was also viciously killed.
The crime sent shockwaves across the nation. Almost immediately, suspicion fell on O.J. Simpson. The case became one of the most infamous in American history, culminating in a dramatic police chase on June 17, 1994, when O.J. led authorities on a slow-speed pursuit in a white Ford Bronco, watched live by millions.
The subsequent trial, often called āThe Trial of the Century,ā lasted from late 1994 to 1995 and captivated the world. On October 3, 1995, O.J. Simpson was acquitted of all charges in a verdict that deeply divided the nation. While many, especially in the Black community, viewed the verdict as a triumph over systemic racism in the justice system, others saw it as a grave miscarriage of justice. Nicoleās family was devastated by the outcome, believing that O.J. had gotten away with murder.

Sally McNeil, born Sally Dempsey on September 30, 1960, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, had a turbulent childhood marked by domestic violence. She attended Dieruff High School, excelling in sports, and later enrolled at East Stroudsburg State College to become a gym teacher. However, financial difficulties forced her to drop out.
Following in her familyās footsteps, McNeil joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving at Camp Pendleton and rising to the rank of Sergeant. She married Anthony Lowden, with whom she had two children. Their marriage ended in divorce due to abuse allegations. During her military service, she won the U.S. Armed Services Physique Championship twice but was eventually demoted and discharged due to behavioral issues.
Sally met fellow bodybuilder Ray McNeil in 1987, marrying him after two months. Their marriage quickly turned abusive. Despite domestic violence reports, Sally stayed with Ray while supporting his bodybuilding career. She engaged in "muscle worship" wrestling videos to finance his training and steroid use, even purchasing steroids from Mexico.
Ray achieved bodybuilding success, including competing in the 1993 Mr. Olympia competition. However, his violent tendencies, fueled by steroids, worsened. Reports indicate he was involved in physical altercations, including a violent nightclub incident.
Sally had a history of violent incidents, including attacking Rayās mistress, brandishing a firearm at her first husband, and threatening police officers. She was also accused of neglecting her children, leaving them alone for extended periods.
On February 14, 1995, after confronting Ray about his infidelity, Sally shot him twice with a sawed-off shotgun, claiming self-defense after he allegedly attacked her. Ray succumbed to his injuries, and Sally was arrested.
Evidence during the trial suggested inconsistencies in Sally's self-defense claim, including the trajectory of the bullets and lack of her DNA on Ray. In 1996, she was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 19 years to life.
Sally's conviction was temporarily overturned in 2004, but the U.S. Supreme Court later reinstated it. She served her sentence at Central California Womenās Facility until her parole was granted on May 29, 2020.

Elizabeth "Beth" Lochtefeld was a successful and well-liked businesswoman whose life was tragically cut short in October 2004. Originally from New York, Beth had recently begun dating Thomas E. Toolan III, a former Manhattan financier. However, their whirlwind romance quickly soured due to Toolanās controlling and erratic behavior. Recognizing the warning signs, Beth ended the relationship after just six weeks, hoping to distance herself from his volatility. She retreated to Nantucket Island, where she had a rental cottage, seeking solace and a fresh start.
Unfortunately, Toolan did not accept the breakup. In a fit of obsession and rage, he flew to Nantucket, rented a car, and drove straight to Bethās home. On October 25, 2004, he confronted her and, in a violent attack, stabbed her multiple times. Shortly after the murder, Toolan attempted to flee the island, but authorities quickly apprehended him at Logan International Airport in Boston. The brutal nature of the crime shocked both Nantucket and Bethās community in New York, leaving family and friends devastated.
In 2007, Toolan was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. However, his conviction was overturned in 2011 due to jury selection issues, leading to a retrial in 2013. Once again, the jury found him guilty, reaffirming his life sentence. The case stood as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the tragic consequences of obsessive and abusive relationships. Beth, remembered for her kindness, intelligence, and adventurous spirit, became yet another victim of intimate partner violence, a crime that continues to claim lives far too often.

MU is joined by survivor, activist, radio host, and subject of a new Lifetime movie...Laura Cowan!
After moving to California for a chance at a better life, Cleveland-native Laura Cowan's dreams quickly become a nightmare.. When her husband is arrested on gun charges, Laura seeks solace from a family friend, who turns out to be a violent polygamist. For four years, Laura and her 3 children endured unimaginable abuse...locked away and held captive in a cold dark garage with no heat, food, and water or plumbing. Laura was repeatedly raped, beaten and starved, alongside her children.
Stripped of everything but the will to survive, not only for herself but for her children; Laura would then decide to do the unthinkable. Fearing that she would never make it out of that garage alive, she began to meticulously keep detailed accounts (via pieces of scrap paper she found throughout the garage) of the horrific daily abuse that she and her children endured. However, it would not be until an unplanned outside visit to the post office with her capture, that her life would forever be changed.
On that fateful day, Laura was able to pass a note pleading for help to a post office clerk, who was then able to alert the proper authorities. Two days later, detectives would emerge onto her captureās doorstep, where she and her children were finally rescued.
In the years since, Laura has turned her ordeal into action...becoming an anti-violence advocate by spreading word about her harrowing story. You can catch her weekly show, "Dear Miss Laura," every Monday at 1:00 p.m. EST on Cleveland's WOVU (www.wovu.com).
Also, be sure to check out "The Girl in the Garage" on Lifetime, featuring the incredible Paige Hurd as Laura and Stephen Bishop as Musa Muhammad!
