People have limiting beliefs about money and personal finances all the time, and Amazon business owners are no exception. For instance, if you do retail arbitrage on Amazon and are thinking of pivoting to wholesale for the first time, you might already be thinking the words “I can’t afford that.” Starting wholesale on Amazon can be overwhelming, but stopping yourself from trying because of a limiting belief kills your Amazon business’s potential to succeed even before you try.
It’s time to flip the script on wholesaling and change “I can’t afford that” to a powerful mindset that will take your Amazon business to new heights.
Today, I discuss how limiting beliefs hinder you from growing your Amazon business and how you can change your money mindset. I explain why wholesaling on Amazon is way more affordable than you think and share a few tips to help you make smart business decisions. I reveal why many online businesses fail and the reason people give up their businesses at the first sign of a setback. I also describe how you can deal with different challenges on Amazon, including market competition, and underscore the power of taking small but consistent steps towards your dreams.
“How you think about money is the key to having more or less of it.” - Kristin Ostrander

I receive a lot of emails and private messages from new Amazon sellers about what it really takes to build a successful Amazon business. During the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were laid off from their corporate jobs or had their work hours drastically reduced and were trying to decide what they should do to earn a livable wage, many people turned to starting an Amazon business.
Now, as things begin to open up and more businesses are slowly starting to hire or call their former employees back to work - many of us are faced with the decision: Should I return to my 9-5, or should I turn my side hustle into a full-time career?
In today’s episode, I discuss the nuts and bolts of turning your Amazon side hustle into a successful, 7-figure business. I share my own experience with running an Amazon business and discuss the realistic expectations you should have if you’re thinking about taking your side hustle to the next level. I dig into the real numbers of how much revenue my business earns each year, our average profit margins, and how much I actually pay myself.
I explain how to ‘do the math’ to figure out how much you need to sell to earn enough to quit your 9-5 job and the things you need to consider when crunching the numbers. I highlight other factors - beyond money - that you should consider when deciding to turn your side hustle into your full-time career and how your “In a Perfect World” scenario can help you make this decision. I explain why it’s important to ask yourself what working from home could do for you, the sacrifices you’d need to make to be able to work from home full-time, and identifying your biggest fears about quitting your 9-5 job. I also share a blueprint you can follow to turn your Amazon side hustle into a full-time income.
“Staying stuck is hard, and changing is hard. So choose which ‘hard’ that you want.” - Kristin Ostrander

I have proven throughout the years that, through smart listing optimization, you can direct buyer traffic to your products without leveraging Amazon ads. But let’s face it: sometimes, Amazon takes time to pick up on your listings and keywords. So, if you’re someone who wants to kick start your bundles and make things speed up a little, you really need to make use of PPCs and some helpful advice from Amazon advertising & PPC marketing expert, Joe Shelrud. He is the founder and CEO of Ad Advance, an Amazon Advertising Management Agency. Joe shares my passion for helping people. By developing strategies and tools - in addition to creating The Ad Project podcast - Joe guides Amazon business owners through their journey towards success.
Joe joins me today to discuss how he transitioned from his career in project management and engineering to start an Amazon business and, eventually, Ad Advantage. He shares the different kinds of Amazon ads and the various ways to approach them. He highlights simple advertising strategies for new Amazon business owners and reveals the perfect time for sellers to outsource to an advertising agency like Ad Advantage. He also outlines the three stages of building a business and reveals the two crucial elements new Amazon sellers should focus on.
“Amazon is a marathon, not a sprint. With advertising, you’re building that foundation for your listing.” - Joe Shelrud

There is a serious issue in the Amazon community that we need to address: fake “gurus” and fraudulent “experts.” You’ve seen their webinars, flashy Ferraris, and lavish lifestyles. You’ve heard of leaving the 9-to-5 life to live in Hawaii and earning $20,000 a month. There’s nothing inherently wrong with all these things. But if you’re someone who’s ready and willing to invest what little you have left in the hopes of getting a better, brighter future, it’s easy to get caught in the illusions of grandeur conjured by dishonest people who’re only after your money.
And what’s the first illusion they’ll try to sell you? It’s that you can set up an Amazon business, forget about it, then earn lumps of money while doing nothing but enjoying a glass of coconut juice on a sunny beach somewhere in the Pacific.
In today’s episode, I discuss how fake Amazon experts lure would-be entrepreneurs into their deception and explain what you can do to avoid them. I share the story of a person whose attempts at private labeling fell flat because of a dishonest Amazon “guru.” I describe my Amazon journey and reveal what it really takes to build a successful online business. I also discuss why you need to think about your “In A Perfect World” scenario before you start your Amazon business and underscore the power of taking small, consistent steps towards your dreams.
“Amazon is not a get rich quick scheme. It takes skills that you’ll have to learn and practice. But if you continue on, it will get easier.” - Kristin Ostrander

Being an Amazon business owner can be incredibly isolating. No matter how much we love the people closest to us, it doesn’t necessarily mean they can understand what we’re saying when we talk about wholesale bundling or the latest terrors from Amazon. You might as well be speaking Greek.
Then there’s the pandemic. COVID-19 flipped the world upside-down when it hit a year ago. For some business owners - myself included - the pandemic made being an online entrepreneur even more isolating. But there’s hope: we don’t have to wait for vaccines to roll out to safely and genuinely connect as entrepreneurs.
In this episode, I contemplate the impact of isolation on our lives, businesses, and wellbeing due to the pandemic. I recall how our world looked before COVID-19 struck and how it changed the way we physically interact. I discuss how isolating it may feel when you run your own business and share what I learned from my own experiences with isolation from the past 12 months. I also highlight the power of finding a community of like-minded individuals where you elevate one another and help each other succeed.
“Being an entrepreneur can be extremely lonely, even if you prefer being alone. Everyone needs someone who understands them; to be heard and understood is at the core of our being.” - Kristin Ostrander

Writing an Amazon listing can be a real challenge. Even the best Amazon sellers can struggle with coming up with an effective title, interesting bullet points, and compelling product description that not only satisfy Amazon’s search algorithm but also entice customers. Luckily, there are people like Karon Thackston, a copywriting and listing expert. Karon is the founder of Marketing Words, through which she and her team have been training entrepreneurs and Amazon business owners on how to create impactful copy and amazing listings that make customers buy.
Karon joins me today to share her advice on how Amazon business owners can write a proper listing that attracts and sells. She discusses what makes a potent listing title and describes the “element of exact match” in Amazon’s search algorithm. She explains the best way to write the bullet points and reveals the right word count for the description section. Karon also shares tips on testing keyword phrases, reveals how long a seller should wait before they make listing changes, and underscore the value of understanding customers.

When some people think about running an Amazon business, they think of sunbathing on a beach in Miami. They think they can just set up a seller account, leave it alone, then reap their reward. Let me get this straight: an Ecommerce business is not all sunshine and rainbows, and it’s definitely not for everybody. It needs time, investment, and dedication if you want to grow a real, sustainable business online. But think about what you can do in your life if you had more time and money - because if you’re willing to get your hands dirty and do the work, your Amazon business will expand and profit.
And yes, that Miami beach dream can come true.
In this episode, I share the real benefits of wholesaling and its different methods, especially wholesale bundling. I describe the various challenges of wholesaling and illustrate how to manage them. I highlight the importance of having conversations with wholesale vendors and explain why it’s okay to admit to them that you’re a beginner. I also explain how wholesale bundling can help you keep competitors away while growing your Amazon business and reveal a question you should ask yourself before starting your Amazon journey.
“If you can send an email, you can run a wholesale business.” - Kristin Ostrander

Amazon communities all over the interwebs have been abuzz about creating private label products. Private labeling on Amazon can be lucrative, but there’s a reason I created my first full-on, authentic private label product only after ten years of running an Amazon business online. Building private label items is risky and involves large investments of time, energy, and money. While risk, investment, blood, and sweat are indeed part of running an online business, it definitely doesn’t have to cost you your entire life savings and two years of your life to see success in your Amazon journey.
Today, I discuss the ups and downs of private labeling on Amazon. I define what private labeling is, differentiate it from “white” labeling, and explain whether it’s really the Holy Grail of Amazon. I enumerate the average time and cost of investment related to building a private label item as well as describe how long it takes to launch a private label product off the ground. I also illustrate some of the risks involved in private labeling and reveal a strategy I’ve used to implement private labeling in a more profitable and less risky way.
“Amazon is its own beast. You need to understand how it works before you can launch a private label product.” - Kristin Ostrander

Whether you want to be a household name or a small Amazon business, trademarking and brand registration with the US PTO is essential to your business’s success. Benjamin Becker, a trademark attorney and founder of the Royal Trademark Law Services, is passionate about educating business owners from all walks of life on growing their brands and hitting new business milestones. Ben stresses that, like with any other kind of businesses, an essential part of keeping your Amazon business going and growing is through trademark registration and protection.
Ben joins me today to discuss the process of having your brand registered and trademarked. He describes what Amazon business owners need to have their products trademarked and reveals how long the process takes. He explains why it’s better to hire a trademark attorney than to go through the process by yourself. He also shares the many benefits of having your products trademarked and underscores how you can make the brand registration process easier.
“A trademark is a good asset to have. It shows your customers you’re somebody they can trust.” - Ben Becker
