  • US open for business as earnings fall and Brexit debate returns
    Tuesday 29th January 2019
Equities took a hit as Caterpillar, a bellwether stock, missed its quarterly forecast, showing that the tariff war isn’t just hitting the Chinese economy. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Tapas Strickland about the market reaction, the end of the US government shutdown (for now) and a busy day for Brexit, as Theresa May’s bill is debated again, with amendments from the House. They also discuss whether the Fed will slow down the pace of the wind-back on its balance sheet and what to expect in the NAB Business Survey this morning.

  • Europe's weakening economy and a downbeat Draghi – time to write off a rate rise?
    Friday 25th January 2019
European PMIs came out weaker than expected. That, together with a downbeat Mario Draghi, saw the Euro weaken, helping push the US dollar higher this morning. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis whether that means a rate rise is off the table this year? They also look at mixed signals from the US, the fall in the Aussie dollar and what to look out for ahead of the long (Australia Day) weekend.

  • Speculation, determinism and pessimism
    Thursday 24th January 2019
There’s something for everyone in the markets this morning – speculation on the British pound on further hope that a no-deal Brexit won’t happen; negativity on the state of the global economy that has managed to overshadow positive earning results from US companies; and determinism – more of less the description Larry Kudlow gave for next week’s meeting on US China trade talks. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s Ray Attrill whether that means we can expect significant movement, one way or the other?

  • Blue day after a blood moon
    Wednesday 23rd January 2019
The Super Blood Wolf Moon in many parts of the world, has been followed by a fairly blue day on the global markets. As NAB’s Gavin Friend discusses with Phil Dobbie, its just another sign of the growing concern about the world’s economy, not helped by some weaker US data and, perhaps, the realisation that a US China trade truce continues to look unlikely anytime soon. But the pound did well overnight, as UK politicians manoeuvre to try and avoid a hard Brexit. And there are plenty of earnings reports over the next 24 hours to inject some life into the equity markets – or not.
