  • Delays, good and bad
    Friday 18th January 2019
There’s still no sign of an end to the US China trade dispute as the end of the cease-fire period draws closer. There’s no end in sight for the US government shutdown either, yet, as Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s Rodrigo Catril, it doesn’t seem to be hurting the economy as much as you might expect. Mind you, it’s getting harder to tell as the publication of some data is being delayed. Over the Atlantic, though, a delay is seen as a good thing. The pound has risen on the prospect that Brexit won’t happen at the end of March, if ever.

  • A longer Brexit (perhaps), a boost for US banks and a bad night for the Aussie
    Thursday 17th January 2019
Theresa May has won the confidence vote in her government, so she can battle on with Brexit. Now there are reports that the EU might extend the Article 50 deadline, meaning even greater procrastination and uncertainty. Phil Dobbie discusses the latest on the fiasco with NAB’s Ray Attrill. They also look at the promising earning figures for US banks and why the Aussie and Kiwi dollars have had such a poor session.

  • Brexit vote defeat, confidence vote and a Sterling bounce
    Wednesday 16th January 2019
Theresa May’s government faced a massive defeat in Parliament with a 230 vote loss on their Brexit withdrawal agreement. Jeremy Corbyn, the Opposition Leader, has immediately launched a confidence vote in the government. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Gavin Friend in London about what happens next. The size of the defeat seems to have spooked the markets. They also discuss weaknesses in US and European data and China’s latest attempts to boost their economy.

  • Shutdown, Slowdown and Voted down
    Tuesday 15th January 2019
The US government shutdown is now in its 25th day but, as Phil Dobbie discusses with NAB’s Tapas Strickland, the direction of the global economy is a bigger concern. China’s export and import figures were well below target yesterday, and Europe delivered very weak industrial figures too. So, can Australia expect to avoid a slowdown, if it is happening? And what of Brexit – within 24 hours Theresa May is likely to have her plan voted down in parliament. Is a second referendum now looking like the most likely outcome or will she manage to get a revised plan agreed?
