  • Optimism despite shutdowns, recession prospects and a meaningless vote
    Monday 14th January 2019
Get ready for a busy week. As NAB’s Ray Attrill discusses with Phil Dobbie, the shutdown impacting parts of the US government remains, the passing of Theresa May’s meaningful vote on Brexit seems unlikely, and negative data from Europe has some wondering whether the region is already in recession. Yet, despite all the doom and gloom there seems some optimism in the markets – why is that?

  • A choppy New Year
    Monday 7th January 2019
It was far from a quiet Christmas period, with volatility driven by data, trade concerns, a government shutdown and a very different attitude coming from the US Fed. To add more excitement, we saw a flash crash in the Aussie dollar last week. Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Ray Attrill about what’s happened over the last couple of weeks and what to look out for in the week ahead.

  • 2018 in Review from the Morning Call Team
    Monday 24th December 2018
2018 has been a year of surprises. The sentiment was positive until October, when equities started to turn, signs of weakness developed within Europe and trade tensions grew between the US and China. Since then we’ve seen equities wipe out the year’s gains, oil has fallen sharply with OPEC failing to counter it and in Australia the dollar lost ground and we pushed back expectations for rate hikes from the RBA. In this final edition of The Morning Call for the year, Phil Dobbie talks to NAB’s Ray Attrill, Rodrigo Catril and David de Garis about the year we had, and what we can expect in 2019.
We’ll be back in early in the new year. In the meantime, enjoy the holiday season and thanks for listening in 2018.

  • More than a Fed response - equities and dollar down, curve flattens
    Friday 21st December 2018
US stocks have fallen markedly since the Fed meeting yesterday, with the dollar also taking a hit and the yield curve flattening a little. Phil Dobbie asks NAB’s David de Garis why there’s been such a sharp reaction – did they really do anything that wasn’t expected? And how come the Riksbank can lift rates only to see their currency rally? They also discuss the impact of a US government shutdown, the response to yesterday’s weak employment numbers in Australia and a healthy dose of US data tonight, including the PCE deflator.
