Dies ist der Roman über einen europäischen Schriftsteller, der – auf Vortragsreise in der afrikanischen Großstadt Nairobi – unvermittelt in die Affären der kenianischen Politik verwickelt wird und mit den erschreckenden und bedrohlichen Lebensverhältnissen der Slums konfrontiert ist.
»Nairobi riecht wie Frangipani und Diesel«, notiert er. Schwarze Dieselwolken hängen in der Luft, doch die Frangipani-Bäume mischen ihr Honigparfum hinein. In Nairobi sind alle auf der Durchreise, auch die, die hier geboren wurden und hier sterben.
»Was soll ich hier?«, fragt sich der Protagonist. »Ich bin hier, um Vorträge über kreatives Schreiben zu halten. In vier Stunden jeweils soll ich aus meinen Werken lesen, Fragen beantworten und den Studenten zeigen, wie man auf Deutsch ein Gedicht schreibt. „Kreatives Schreiben kann man gar nicht unterrichten.“ Mit dieser Feststellung beginne ich meistens meinen Vortrag«.
Schließlich verliebt sich der Held, schläft mit der falschen Frau, stolpert über eine Leiche und ist plötzlich mitten drin in einem Korruptionsfall. – Ein witziger und gleichzeitig trauriger Roman über das Verhältnis von Nord und Süd, Schwarz und Weiß, Frau und Mann.
