Have you ever had a breast cancer scare? What thoughts have gone through your mind, and how did you cope with the situation? Where can you find support?
In this podcast episode, I open up and share a very personal story with you about my breast health journey. I share my fears, my anxiety, and my vulnerability.
Getting checked in the pastIn the past, Veronica found two lumps in her breasts when she was getting checked over 20 years ago.
Her doctor ruled that she had naturally lumpy breasts – a normal thing – but encouraged her to keep getting checked regularly to be on the safe side.
I’ve been doing it for a long time. Every single time I’ve gone it’s been like clockwork. I go, they tell me everything’s fine, I get the thing in the mail saying everything’s fine, I get a call from my doctor and they tell me everything’s fine. thats just the way it’s been. (Veronica Cisneros)
A recent scareA few weeks ago, Veronica went in for her standard breast examination, but the clockwork system didn’t go as it usually did.
She got a call back two days after her appointment from the doctors saying that another screening was necessary. Feeling uncertain, Veronica contacted her doctor personally and was told to schedule an appointment to receive the personal results.
Over the weekend before her appointment for the upcoming Monday, Veronica found herself looking at her family in a different way.
She became frustrated and upset with the uncertainty that she was feeling and had to get away for a moment to be by herself.
I was feeling all of these things. I was feeling flooded with emotions, I knew how to handle this but I didn’t want to do it that way. (Veronica Cisneros)
Getting the newsVeronica was called about her appointment and told that they had found four lumps.
I can’t get past her saying that they found four lumps, so I take a deep breath and I ask her to explain more, she says, “We’re not concerned, we believe they’re cysts, but we’re wanting to go ahead and get them scanned. (Veronica Cisneros)
Because Veronica had had previous scans from all her appointments over the years, she asked them to compare these recent scans with those.
Finally, Veronica is able to get an appointment to have the scans looked at. After all the fear, anxiety, and confusion, she got confirmation that they were harmless lumps. They should be checked regularly, but they were harmless, and she was going to be okay.
I’m here for you, and I’m so thankful that you all have allowed me to be a part of your journey and even more thankful that you guys have supported me. (Veronica Cisneros)
