  • Living in Love & Forgiveness - Part 3
Forgiveness happens when we intentionally and voluntarily allow God to change our feelings and attitude regarding an offense or wrongdoing, let go of negative emotions such as revenge, and deliberately forgive the offender. We release the offense and the offender without requiring a penalty. Forgiveness is a choice, a decision, not a feeling. Living in love and forgiveness has spiritual, mental, and physical benefits.

  • Living in Love & Forgiveness - Part 2
The devils scheme is to trap us into living in offense versus living in love and forgiveness. As Matthew 24:10-12 makes clear, offense leads to turning away from the faith, betraying and hating each other, and ultimately letting love for one another grow cold. When we are offended, instead of building walls of self-protection and self-justification, we must open the door of our hearts to the Lord, experience his love and forgiveness, and then extend the same to others.

  • Living in Love & Forgiveness - Part 1
In this passage, Pauls concern for a repentant brother is that he would be restored in fellowship with the body of Christ. Rather than continuing to isolate the one who grieved them all, the church is called to love and forgive this person. The call to fellowship continues to be a vitally important command for the Church today.

  • How Should We Conduct Ourselves?
The Corinthians criticized Paul for changing his travel plans and not visiting them as he said he would. Paul makes it clear and he calls God as his witness and stakes his life on it that it was in order to spare them that he did not return to Corinth. Paul insists that his interactions with the Corinthians were based on godly wisdom and grace. In understanding how Paul conducts himself with the Corinthians, particularly in terms of how he responds to their criticism of him, we learn how we should conduct ourselves with all people.

  • Comfort
Paul draws attention to the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles because we will share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ. When we suffer, there is no better recourse than drawing near to the Father of compassion, the source of abundant comfort.

  • Finally...
In closing his letter to the Corinthians, Paul provides five directives for Christian living. If the summary of what it means to be a Christian is to receive, believe, and hold firmly to the gospel message, the summary of how to then live daily as a Christian is summarized here in verses 13-14. These directives are familiar themes from Pauls letters to other churches. They serve as important points of application for every believer.

  • Church Practices
In four verses, Paul highlights three common church practices regarding corporate worship, collection of funds, and helping those in need. The order of corporate worship, how much time is taken for each activity in a corporate gathering, and how the activity is managed may vary considerably within the body of Christ. The important biblical principle is that all these activities are for the glory of God and the building up of the Church.

  • Since You Will Be Resurrected...
The Corinthians objections to the resurrection were focused on how a dead body could possibly be resuscitated. Their focus was on the natural (physical) body. Pauls focus, however, was on the infinite, all-knowing, all-powerful God who created our spirits, souls, and bodies, provided a plan of salvation and restoration to deal with death (the wages of our sin), and made a promise to give us a spiritual body in the resurrection.

  • If Christ Has Not Been Raised...
If Christ has not been raised from the dead, then our preaching is useless. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, our preaching would be a false witness since we would be promoting a lie. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, sin and death, the wages of sin, would not be defeated and we would still be in our sins. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If Christ has not been raised from the dead, our faith is futile. Christs resurrection is fundamental to the Christian faith.

  • It's All About the Gospel
After teaching, correcting, rebuking, and encouraging the Corinthians through 14 chapters, Paul returns to the one topic that he believes is of utmost importance: the gospel message, the good news of what Jesus has done. It is by the gospel that we are saved if we hold firmly to the word that was preached, that is, if we apply the word, and live by the word.
