  • Don't Set Your Heart on Evil Things
All the things that happened to the children of Israel in the exodus from Egypt serve as examples for us. From their acts of rebellion against God, we learn of the progressive nature of sin and idolatry that leads to judgment. We learn that we are to continually examine ourselves. We are to guard against pride and thinking that we are standing firm in our own strength. We trust in the Lord who is faithful to help us endure.

  • Keep Your Eyes on the Prize
Paul uses the analogy of an athlete training for and participating in the Olympic or Isthmian games to encourage the Corinthian believers to persevere in running the spiritual race set before them. The athletes in the games competed with one another for a crown that would quickly fade away. Believers in Christ do not compete with each other but rather encourage one another to remain steadfast in the Lord to finally receive the greatest reward, the Lord himself.

  • All Things to All People
Paul reinforces his willingness to give up his rights and privileges for the sake of the gospel by stating that he is more than willing to become all things to all people so that by all possible means he might win at least some to the Lord.

  • Regarding Material Support
In this passage, Paul begins with a spirited defense of his ministry and his rights. He then makes a case for ministers being eligible to receive material benefits from their ministry. And he concludes with why he has chosen to not receive any material benefits from the Corinthians. As he does in previous passages, he makes it clear that he is willing to forego his rights for the sake of others and for the sake of the gospel.

  • It's Not About the Food
Knowledge puffs up while love builds up seems like an odd thing to say when considering whether to eat food that had been sacrificed to idols. Pauls point to the Corinthian believers was that it was not about the food. Rather the Corinthians inappropriate boasting of their own knowledge and their behavior towards weaker brothers and sisters reflected their inappropriate heart attitude.

  • God's Good Design - Part 3
The Corinthians thought that being a Christian meant that you could either indulge the flesh in every way or you had to practice ascetic self-denial and not have any sexual relations even in a marriage relationship. Paul counters these arguments but his primary purpose in this passage is not to promote celibacy over marriage or describe the conditions for divorce and remarriage. Rather, his emphasis is that because of the present distress believers in the Lord Jesus Christ should live their lives in undivided devotion to him even as they await his second coming.

  • God's Good Design - Part 2
Our bodies belong to the Lord. Our bodies matter to the Lord. When we flee from sexual immorality, it is not only about denying the flesh to live self-controlled lives, but primarily about honoring the Lord with our bodies and actively pursuing Gods righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart (2 Timothy 2:22).

  • God's Good Design - Part 1
Having described his great distress and anguish of heart with many tears, not to grieve them but to let the Corinthian believers know the depth of his love for them, Paul calls out the Corinthians for not dealing appropriately with an egregious sin in their midst: a man is sleeping with his fathers wife. To understand why Paul describes this as sexual immorality and as yeast that will leaven the whole batch of dough if it is not removed, it is necessary to understand how the Bible describes sex as good and from God.

  • Like Father, Like Son
Paul describes his relationship with the Corinthians as a father with his children. He could have chosen to dissociate with them when they opposed him and boasted about their wrongdoing. Instead, he presses in to admonish, urge them to change, and even threaten discipline because he cares deeply for them. Through his continued interaction we see that Paul is not exerting authoritarian control. Rather, he is exercising parental care.

  • Do Not Go Beyond
Paul cautions his readers to not go beyond what is written. Based on his previous references to Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Psalms it is clear that we are not to go beyond the Old Testament scriptures. However, the best understanding of Pauls statement is that he is also referring to what we know as the New Testament scriptures. Ultimately, Paul is pointing us to Jesus, the Word of God made flesh, to remind us that it is always about Jesus and the gospel message. We are not to go beyond the Word of God.
