  • Tongues & Prophecies are for the Common Good (Part 3)
Paul concludes his directives on how the gifts of tongues and prophecy should be exercised in the church by stating that everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way. Maintaining order in the church requires an understanding of who God is and how the Holy Spirit works.

  • Tongues & Prophecies are for the Common Good (Part 2)
Public tongues must be accompanied with interpretation so that the message is clearly understood. Prophecy must be by the Holy Spirit so that the message from the Lord for the people benefits the hearers. Rather than shying away from desiring and exercising spiritual gifts, we need to pray for tongues with interpretation and prophecy.

  • Tongues & Prophecies are for the Common Good (Part 1)
Tongues and prophecies in the Church are for the building up of the Church. It is important to understand that there are different kinds of tongues, both private and public. The public expression of tongues without interpretation results in unintelligible words. The private expression of tongues is for self-edification.

  • Love for the Common Good
1 Corinthians 13 reminds us of the necessity and preeminence of love (v. 1-3), the character of love (v. 4-7), and the permanence of love (v. 8-13). The familiarity of these verses may cause us to overlook their meaning and impact. We must, however, pay close attention to the divine imperative to love others according to the character of God.

  • Spiritual Gifts Are For The Common Good (Part 2)
In the second half of 1 Corinthians 12, Paul continues his explanation of spiritual gifts being for the common good by using the analogy of the human body. Every member of the body has a specific function, a gifting, that is vitally important to the overall health and wellbeing of the whole body. A healthy and unified body will manifest the power of God and advance the kingdom of God.

  • Spiritual Gifts Are For The Common Good (Part 1)
Chapters 12-14 of 1 Corinthians are often grouped together as a study of spiritual gifts because spiritual gifts in general and the specific gifts of tongues and prophecies are referenced in all three chapters. However, Pauls primary focus in these passages is not on a comprehensive listing or a detailed explanation of spiritual gifts. Just as we have seen in previous chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul is much more focused on how our gifts and our love for each other are exercised how our gifts are used and how the presence and power of the Holy Spirit are manifest for the common good of the body of Christ.

  • Do This in Remembrance
The behavior of at least some of the Corinthians when participating in the Lords Supper resulted in division and discrimination. Paul points out that the Lords Supper is meant to be a communal fellowship where everyone partakes together in the bread and the cup in remembrance of what Christ had done. We must remember the truth and, most importantly, take action.

  • Being Dependent
Pauls primary focus in this passage is propriety and order in worship. The 21st-century reader must understand Pauls emphasis and the cultural context of the 1st-century Corinthians to focus on healthy interdependent relationships (with Christ and within the body of Christ) rather than rules (related to length of hair or the nature and necessity of head coverings).

  • Free to Choose
Paul wraps up his response to the Corinthians questions about eating meat sacrificed to idols by reminding them to glorify God (the one to whom the world and everything in it belongs), to have a clear conscience, to forego their rights for the sake of a weaker brother or sister (for the sake of their conscience), to not cause anyone to stumble, to be all things to all people for the purpose of winning some to the Lord, and to not abuse their freedoms in Christ.

  • The Lord's Table
Paul points out that when we participate in the Lords Supper (communion), we are fellowshipping with Christ. We are also fellowshipping with the members of the body of Christ. Every time we participate in communion, we are acknowledging Christs sacrifice and were offering thanks for what he did.
