  • A Clear Conscience
Paul states that he is not concerned that the Corinthians are judging him. And he is not even judging himself. Because he has a clear conscience. The conscience is not merely a referee of our thoughts but a consciousness of Gods truth and good and light and love that could only come from the Holy Spirit. A clear conscience is possible only through the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Building with Care - Part 2
Paul begins this chapter with a metaphor of the Corinthians believers as infants who are unable to consume solid food. He describes the work of the gospel with the metaphor of sowing, watering, and growing seeds. Then in verse 10, Paul switches from the agricultural metaphor to an architectural metaphor referring to the believers as a building, gospel workers as builders, and the Lord himself building up the Church to present four vitally important truths about the spiritual building process.

  • Having the Mind of Christ
When we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, we receive the Holy Spirit as the seal of salvation. Paul points out that it is the Holy Spirit who knows the deep things of God and reveals it to us so that we may understand what God has given us, what he destined for our glory even before the creation of time. The Holy Spirit reveals the mind of Christ to us. We can evaluate all things by considering what Jesus would think about it.

  • The Message of the Cross
In this passage, Paul elaborates on the message and power of the cross of Christ. Despite his wisdom, eloquence, and direct commission from the Lord Jesus, Paul did not rely on any of those factors to persuade his listeners. Instead, in his preaching and teaching, he resolved to know nothing except Jesus Christ and him crucified. Paul was convinced that the message of the cross accompanied by the power of the Spirit was sufficient to bring people to God.

  • Who Are You Following? What Are You Depending On?
The believers in Corinth were claiming to be aligned with Paul, Apollos, Peter, or even Christ to support their own arguments and interpretations of the gospel message. It is not that Apollos or Peter taught them something contrary to what Paul had taught them. It was, as 2 Timothy 4:2-4 makes clear, they had not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires they were trying to find support for what their itching ears wanted to hear.

  • The Last Word
Paul concludes his letter to the believers in Rome with a warning, a directive, and a blessing. His closing is a reminder that having received the truth of God, the children of God must be vigilant and discerning about remaining in the truth. They must apply the word of God but not go further than what the word of God says. And ultimately, the last word for every child of God is to join with Paul in declaring, to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

  • Naming Names
Paul greets or commends more than 35 people in Romans 16. The Bible contains many lists of names. Although the meanings of names, especially in the Old Testament, are significant the more important consideration for the modern reader of the Bible is the message that the listing of these names convey. These named individuals in the Bible help us to learn more about God and his plans for humanity.

  • What We Do to Minister to Others
In Romans 15, as Paul describes not only his motivation for doing what he does ministering to others to lead them to worship God he also describes how he goes where no one else has gone to proclaim the gospel, how he rallies the body of Christ to meet social and spiritual needs, and how prayer undergirds all that he does. Paul sets an example for us and motivates us to act similarly to minister to others.
