  • Why We Do What We Do
Christians should do what they do minister to others because of the grace and calling of God. Sadly, missions and ministry have sometimes been motivated by the wrong reasons. In this passage where Paul describes why he does what he does, he provides a great example of what God-glorifying, Holy Spirit manifesting ministry to others should look like.

  • The Culmination of the Gospel
Pauls letter to the believers in Rome culminates in the same way that the gospel culminates: in a message of hope. Gods plan of salvation for all humanity culminates in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Everything that happens on earth between Resurrection Sunday and the second coming of Jesus is merely the consequence of what Jesus accomplished during his earthly ministry. Our past, present, and future hope of salvation are all possible because Jesus rose from the dead!

  • Don't Quarrel Over Disputable Matters
Although Jesus command in John 13:34-35 was for his disciples to love each other, the Church has often been characterized by a lack of love and deep divisions. Many of these disagreements have not been over essential doctrines but over what Paul refers to as non-essential disputable matters. In Romans 14, disciples of Christ are reminded that whether they are weak or strong they can act in love towards one another by faith. As Rupertus Meldenius wrote in the 17th century AD, In essentials unity; in nonessentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.

  • Loving Others
Loving others is not just a virtue (Romans 5:5, 12:9) and a duty (Romans 12:10), it is also a debt that we can never pay off (Romans 13:10). Unlike the command to pay off every other kind of debt and not owe anyone anything, we will always owe others love. We must love others all our lives. And, in loving others, we fulfill the law of God.

  • Submitting to Authorities
What does it mean for a Christian to be subject to governing authorities? Are all governing authorities legitimate? Is there any occasion or justification for a Christian to oppose those in authority? There are no easy answers to these questions, however, the Bible does provide guiding principles for determining the appropriate interaction with governing authorities.

  • Living in Harmony
The Bible sets a deliberately demanding standard when it commands us to not be overcome by evil but rather to overcome evil with good. The command to bless those who persecute us requires a diligent dependence on God to obey his word and fulfill his will. When we are filled with the word of God and the Holy Spirit, our teacher and counselor who brings the word of God to life, then we apply the truth of Gods word in our relationships with friends and foes to live in harmony with everyone.

  • Loving Sincerely
Just as he does in 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14, Paul couples his description of spiritual gifts in Romans 12 with the directive to love sincerely. Our lives, ministry, and relationships must be undergirded by an active love for God and others. Two practical ways to express love are in sharing with those in need and practicing hospitality.

  • Body Ministry - Part 3
Developing Spiritual Gifts - We have different spiritual gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. Our responsibility is to eagerly desire the gifts not according to what we think is right or best but according to how the Lord, the gift giver, determines what we should have and when we should have it. We exercise our gifts with love in a fitting and orderly manner to build up the Church.

  • Body Ministry - Part 2
Desiring Spiritual Gifts - A spiritual gift is a special attribute given by the Holy Spirit, to the members of the body of Christ, according to God's grace, to be used within the context of the body, for the benefit of those inside and outside the body. As Philippians 2:3-4 reminds us, we do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility we value others above ourselves, not looking to our own interests but each of us to the interests of the others. We must be other-centered rather than self-centered. It is only then that we can rightly minister the spiritual gifts that God gives us.

  • Body Ministry - Part 1
Members of One Body - Romans 12:1-2 directs us to know the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. Romans 12:3-8 makes it clear that the will of God is discovered and lived out in community. We must understand the importance of the body of Christ and what it means to humbly care for the members of the body.
