As followers of Jesus, we are called to live lives of compelling beauty, meaning, courage, and joy. Why is that so difficult? Because we're living in exile. We live in a foreign culture, one largely driven and defined by hostility, cynicism, and self-preservation. Today we will examine the dynamics of exile and gain a better understanding of how we can thrive in exile.

What do you do when life doesn't turn out how you hoped? The Israelites never dreamed of being conquered by a foreign empire. Daniel never dreamed of being taken from his home. Yet "Daniel resolved" to live differently in exile. He learned the language and literature of the Babylonians, but he refused to eat their food. How can we do the same today?

Have you traded the story you've been created to live for a lesser story? It can happen. This is the story of the Israelites. They were chose to be a people who belong to God and bless the world. They traded their calling in order to become like other nations, living to conquer and accumulate. Because of this, they end up in exile. Their story is our story.

Jesus didn't come to start a new religion but establish a new reality As we gather ourselves after a grueling election season, we're asking Jesus "where do we go from here?"
