Jeffrey J. Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His books include Kali’s Child, Esalen, Authors of the Impossible, The Serpent’s Gift, Mutants and Mystics, The Supernatural (with Whitley Strieber), Secret Body, The Flip: Epiphanies of Mind and the Future of Knowledge, and Superhumanities. He is coauthor, with Elizabeth Krohn, of Changed in a Flash: One Woman’s Near-Death Experience and Why a Scholar Thinks It Empowers Us All. Here he shares his understanding that the humanities (philosophy, religious studies, literature, and history) have always been deeply imbued with an appreciation for the paranormal and the sacred. He cites many examples to support this position, particularly Friedrich Nietzsche’s ideas of the “superman” and “eternal recurrence.”

The Marian Apparitions at Zeitoun with Travis Dumsday

Travis Dumsday is Chair of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Concordia University of Edmonton, Canada. He is author of several books, including Dispositionalism and the Metaphysics of Science, Alternative Conceptions of the Spiritual: Polytheism, Animism, and More in Contemporary Philosophy of Religion; and The Marian Apparitions at Zeitoun: An Evidential Inquiry.

Here he describes a series of intermittent apparitions associated with a Coptic church in a suburb of Cairo, Egypt, between 1968 and 1971, that were witnessed by over a million people. He evaluates a number of conventional explanations for the phenomena and find them all incapable of explaining the reported observations.

Shame: The Hidden Struggle with Pat DeYoung

Patricia A. DeYoung, PhD has a Masters of Social Work and a PhD in Philosophy of Education from the University of Toronto. She is a Registered Clinical Social Worker in Ontario, Canada and has been a practitioner of psychotherapy since 1996. She was a founding faculty member of the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy, where she taught for 25 years. Dr. DeYoung has written three books:  Relational Psychotherapy: A Primer; Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame: Healing Right Brain Relational Trauma; and Shame and Grace: Six Essays on Falling Apart and Becoming Whole Again.

Here Pat shares insights from her work as a relational psychotherapist and from her research on chronic shame. She discusses shame’s relationship to addiction, narcissism, and to the dysregulation in ourselves and in the culture writ large.

Emotions and the Brain with Mark Solms

Mark Solms is Director of Neuropsychology at the Neuroscience Institute of the University of Cape Town. He is also Honorary Lecturer in Neurosurgery at the St Bartholomew’s & Royal London Hospital School of Medicine and an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists. He is a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society and the American and South African Psychoanalytic Associations and has received numerous honours and awards, including the Sigourney Prize.  Mark has published 350 scientific papers, and eight books, the latest being The Hidden Spring (Norton, 2021). Mark is also the authorized editor and translator of the Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (24 volumes) and the forthcoming Complete Neuroscientific Works of Sigmund Freud (4 volumes).

Here Mark shares insights from his research in neuropsychoanalysis, including joyful play as the bedrock of harmonizing the various aspects of human nature. He emphasizes that time-and-time again, humans discover new frameworks for articulating the dynamics of suffering and salvation.

InPresence 0258: Graduate Education in Parapsychology

Jeffrey Mishlove shares his dream of establishing such a unique graduate level program in parapsychology. Magic: Chaos and Transcendental with Ronnie Pontiac

Ronnie Pontiac was the personal research assistance for Manly P. Hall at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles. He is author of American Metaphysical Religion: Esoteric and Mystical Traditions of the New World. He is coauthor with Tamra Lucid of The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic. 

Here he shares his personal experiences with the practice of chaos magic. He describes the history of this approach and various colorful practitioners. He also explores its application in politics. Then he compares chaos magic with Eliphas Levi’s writings on transcendental magic (and beyond).
