This week I'm talking to Lorri Brewer about her book 'Heaven Time: Discovering a New Way of Life After a Near-Death Experience'

On September 19, 2010, author Lorri Brewer, was faced with the greatest challenge of her life. Her cardiac condition worsened and she was rushed to the hospital where she lost her life for just almost two minutes. She crossed over from this living plane to another energetic dimension suffering a near-death experience (NDE). My working life began as an Apprentice Gas Fitter, through technical and managerial rolls to IT consultant, business owner, therapist, and political author, now largely retired, I’ve brought this work to the fore after about 13 years, because it is simply the right time. I had been conducting LBL (Life Between Lives) sessions for about 7 years from 2005, the year I undertook the training with the eminent Michael Newton as the lead trainer, until 2012, when I stopped work to concentrate upon a quite different role as my wife’s (Sandra) carer after her breast cancer diagnosis at the end of 2008. A few years have passed since then and the publication of this quite new perspective on the many spiritual revelations uncovered during these sessions took some time before forming into a realistic prospect for a book. That which I have discovered has been repeated by hundreds of other like-minded and like skilled facilitators.

The delay in writing the book was due, in the main, to a need to add a breadth of meaning and understanding not really explored that well in other similar texts. Rather than simply repeat the work that Michael Newton had pioneered, I wanted to connect these spiritual understandings to modern day living. Once I felt I had a sense of what I wanted to achieve with the book I began the onerous task of transcribing a seemingly endless supply of audio files, noting areas of special interest. The rather recent advent of AI, that could accurately turn an audio file into a textual document sped up the last of these quite dramatically. It still took about 18 months to two years to formulate the structure of the book in a way that would achieve these objectives best. Once that was decided in the back of my head, I began to write.

There have been three stages in my life where I have “grown” as a person and in my understanding about myself, my world and my spirituality. I came from a very practical background, was very focused on work and my family which I don’t think is too bad a place to start. I would have begun this with the short period as a musician where I went from playing in a group part time to going professional. Having been dabbling and playing since school I took the plunge and in 1969, gave up the full-time job (which actually paid), got married, and spent the next 9 months travelling all over the country for peanuts. All I learnt from that experience was that I wasn’t cut out for that kind of life. That’s not really personal growth so much as abject realism.

My first period of enlightenment was a two-year course in management (DMS, Diploma in Management Studies) taken when I was about 26. The course required engagement with people from very different backgrounds, all very able, and immersion in that environment opened my eyes quite a bit. A section of the course covered Psychology which added significantly to how I viewed the world and people. Secondly was the quite unusual involvement (because I was 30 years old) with Kyokushnkai Karate. I took my two young sons along initially and, of course, tried it myself.

They soon became bored, but for some bizarre reason I stuck at it, despite the fact that I had never been so physically and mentally stretched ever before. 20 years later, as a 4th Dan, I retired. Joints began to hurt more than before, and it was taking up too much of my time. However, I learnt a lot about myself as a person. The most significant period for me came after selling my small company and re-training as a hypnotherapist in 2003, aged 56. After an initial period, I began doing Past Life Regression and then after having read of the groundbreaking LBL work decided that I just had to train in that discipline as well. The whole period, including reaching trainer level in EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), opened my eyes to different worlds, metaphorically and reality. Throughout my life I’ve done things that could be described as impulsive, or unfounded, but I truly believe now that some of those momentous decisions, including writing this book, weren’t really my ideas at all. Sometimes if you just listen, you’ll know what to do.

In this episode I'm talking to Jim Matlock about his book 'Signs of Reincarnation: Exploring Beliefs, Cases, and Theory'

The guest this week is Linda Deir. We talk about her book 'Guided: Her Spirit Guide Angels Were Her Best Friends and Life Coaches'.

At the hands of her bully mother, just 20 months old, Linda’s life was in danger. Out of options, she ran away from home only to be returned by the Sacramento police. This week my guest is Sharon Rawlette. We talk about possible sources for coincidences such as spirit guides, God, deceased loved ones and what they mean. We go through many different areas and it's a fascinating conversation.

This all comes from her new book The Source and Significance of Coincidences: A Hard Look at the Astonishing Evidence.

Every now and then, we all have experiences that seem too meaningful to be chance but that we can't explain in any normal way. Now, philosopher Sharon Hewitt Rawlette tackles some of the hardest questions surrounding such coincidences, also known as "synchronicities":

   How can we calculate whether a synchronicity is too improbable to be just chance?
   What hard evidence is there that these events convey genuine messages from God or our deceased loved ones?
   Do ordinary people have the psychic ability to create coincidences, for themselves or others?
   Why do coincidences sometimes harm or deceive?

Rawlette brings together an immense body of research (drawn from science, statistics, near-death experiences, deathbed visions, and many other extraordinary human experiences) that clearly points to a meaningful reality beyond the bounds of current science and at the same time demonstrates both the promise and peril of interpreting synchronicities as signs from above. Rigorously paradigm-shattering, this volume will leave skeptics and believers alike ruminating for years to come.

Sharon is an analytically trained philosopher (PhD from New York University, 2008) who specializes in metaethics and the metaphysics and epistemology of paranormal experiences. My most recent scholarly publication is on the topic of the statistical significance of psychic coincidences and their implications for belief in psychic causation. Her past publications include The Feeling of Value (2016), a defense of analytic descriptivism in ethics, and "What do our intuitions about the experience machine really tell us about hedonism?" (2010).
