Segment 1: Wheels on Meals (movie 1984)

Keith's other guilty pleasure is the Hong Kong kung-fu acrobatics comedy "Wheels on Meals." The stunts, martial arts, and physical comedy skills of Jackie Chan, Samo Hung, and Yuen Baio are wrapped in a perfectly goofy, cheesy shell.

Wheels on Meals is available on DVD through Amazon. Unfortunately it is currently between digital availability (legally).

Segment 2: Nana (manga 2000-On Hiatus)

John's (@lordjoho) guilty pleasure is the world of Shojo Manga (primarily marketed to young women) and he recommends entering the world through Ai Yazawa's "Nana."

The series has run 21 issues so far, but no additional material has been added to the manga series since 2009.  Two live action movies and an animated series have been released based on the comic.

You can find Nana in trade paperback through Amazon, and you can purchase it digitally through VIZ, the US publisher.

Segment 1: The Tudors (television show 2007-2010)

Mary (@maryvarn) admits to Showtime's The Tudors as her Guilty pleasure. The series aims to show Henry VIII in his virile prime as a the young king. Lots of sex mixed with court intrigue, this is some saucy history.

Segment 2: Goldie Looking Chain (band from 2000-)

Keith's (earthlingkeith.tumblr.com) guilty pleasure is the sorta faux Welsh hip-hop group "Goldie Lookin' Chain." Formed in 2000 they didn't see a record pressed until their first in 2004, which was titled "Greatest Hits."

Segment 1: "Blowin' in the Wind" by Sam Cooke (1964) is better than "Blowin' in the Wind" by Bob Dylan (1963)

Keith (earthlingkeith.com) contends that Sam Cooke's live rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind," from Sam Cooke at the Copa is better than Bob Dylan's original version off of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan.

The Peter, Paul and Mary version is the most financially successful of the time, and Dylan's is the most well known now. 

Cooke's Copa was one of his last releases while alive, he died later in the same year, 1964.

Segment 2: "Risk: Legacy" (2011) is better than "Risk" (1957)

John (@lordjoho) proclaims that Risk: Legacy is better than the classic game of Risk. Legacy is built to be customized as you play, the board evolves over roughly 15 games. They encourage you to stick with the same group of up to 5 players.

The classic version of Risk has been revised a few times, most notably in adding alternate win conditions and goals.

Risk: Legacy has a loose Science Fiction theme, it isn't nearly as heavily themed as the excellent Risk: 2210.

Risk: Legacy is available on Amazon, online boardgame retailers, and possibly as your local friendly game store.

Segment 1: "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley (1994) is better than "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen (1984)

Mary (@maryvarn) contends that Jeff Buckley's rendition of Hallelujah from the 1994 album "Grace" is better than that of the writer of the song, Leonard Cohen, who released the original version on his "Various Positions" album in 1984.

Cohen's album wasn't even released in the US until a year or two later, while Buckley's version is considered one of the 500 greatest songs of all time. 

Buckley died shortly before the final legs of work began on his second album, so the success of his album and this song are posthumous.

Segment 1: "Dark Night of the Soul" by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, w/David Lynch (2010 album)

John (@lordjoho) brings us an album from the late Mark Linkous, AKA Sparklehorse, in collaboration with DangerMouse and featuring David Lynch. 

The Album had a rocky release, with a series of legal entanglements and the apparent suicide of Sparklehorse, it seemed that the project would stay unofficially released. 

Thankfully the album found release and you can now find it digitally on iTunes, Rdio, Spotify.  As well as in hardcopy.

Segment 2: "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace" (2004 television show)

Keith Vincent (earthlingkeith.com) wasn't able to join us for the record, but he did offer us a great pick for the "Cult/Fringe" theme.  This British comedy series from 2004 is a fake bad 80's tv show by a fake bad horror novelist, with fake commentary from the fake novelist and the fake producer. 

Left to Right- Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade, Matt Holness, Alice Lowe.

Currently the DVD isn't for sale in a US Region. It aired briefly on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. You can purchase a Region 2 version online, but you can't play that in most DVD players.

Segment 1: R. Crumb (comic artist/illustrator)

Jules (@beautifuljules) brings us a the underground comic artist Robert Crumb. Combining his own sexual and racial hangups with his experiments in psychedelics to contrast them with societal norms and hypocrisy, Crumb produces controversial works that have influenced the past 40 plus years of comic artists, illustrators and animators.

A professed misogynist who is obsessed with the female form and sex, Crumb folds his dark and deeply personal subject matter in art heavily influenced by the cartoonists and illustrators from the golden age of cartooning. 

A documentary about Crumb and his family was released in 1994. The director, Terry Zwigoff, was a long-time friend of Crumb. The two met in the 70's and share a love of vintage blues and early rock records and music. The pair played in a band who covered and emulated that style of music. 

Crumb illustrated the poster for Zwigoff's first film "Louie Bluie" about visual artist Howard "Louie Bluie" Armstrong, member of the last known black string band in America.

The Zwigoff documentary "Crumb" can be found in the Criterion release on Blu-Ray and DVD, as well as a digital copy on iTunes and Amazon. You can also watch it online at Crackle.

Segment 2: "Hairspray" by John Waters (1988 film)

Mary Varn's (@maryvarn, npccomic.com) "Cult/Fringe" pick is John Waters' first PG-rated film.  The film was turned into a broadway musical in the 00's, then the musical was made into a film in 2007. Don't bother with the musical or the remake until you've seen the 1988 original. 

This was actor Divine's final film role, which makes John Travolta's reprisal all the more insulting. 

John Waters is a cult filmmaker who tackles sexual themes and the taboo. In Hairspray he uses the musical movie optimism of the 1950's and 60's to explore the racial tensions of segregation. A strange aspect of non-mainstream films like John Waters' is that the female characters are strong individuals- something that highlights the flaws in mainstream filmmaking and storytelling.

Segment 1: "Daytripper" by Fábio Moon & Gabriel Bá  (comic book)

John (@lordjoho) brings us a graphic novel that collects ten issues of a finite-run comic series. Collected in late 2011, this is a Vertigo comic, an imprint of DC comics. Vertigo tends to skirt the edge of independent and is decidedly more adult oriented in terms of theme and subject matter. 

This graphic novel is available in hardcopy and digitally.

Segment 2: Searching for Sugar Man (documentary film)

Keith Vincent's (earthlingkeith.com) "Recent" pick is an award winning documentary about a musician from the 60's/70's who didn't have commercial success in the US. He faded into the past, but his music took root in South Africa.

Keith Vincent (earthlingkeith.tumblr.com) offers up a Nickelodeon television show from the 90's.  A surrealist sit-com from the dual perspective of two brothers, one on either side of puberty, it is a must see. This year (2013) Pete & Pete is celebrating it's 20th Anniversary.

The specific episode we're talking about is "Time Tunnel" from the second season. You can find The Adventures of Pete & Pete on DVD- Season 1, Season 2.
