Welcome to a profoundly moving episode as we sit down with Angie Hanson, who bravely shares her grief journey that began in June 2006. It was a heartbreaking start as her 1-year-old son, Garret, passed away suddenly in his sleep due to an undetected heart condition. Tragedy continued to unfold when, 1 1/2 years later, Angie's husband, Jack, was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal Ocular Melanoma. After a 16-month battle with chemo and radiation, Jack lost his fight in February 2009. In a heart-wrenching series of events, Angie's brother, Seth, who had been battling a brain tumor for 5 years, underwent a third surgery and, tragically, didn't recover. He passed away just two months after Jack, in April 2009. The thread of grief persisted as Angie unexpectedly lost her sister-in-law in 2018 due to alcoholism.
Despite these immense losses, Angie has found strength in her mission. She's successfully launched "Butterflies + Halo's," an online greeting card business focused on offering hope to grieving hearts. Her dedication extends to a podcast she co-launched called "From Loss to Light," aiming to change the narrative around grief and dispel the stigma associated with it. Angie's mission is clear: to educate everyone on grief and empower them to navigate it positively, fostering a culture where conversations about loss are met with understanding rather than awkwardness. Join us for this enlightening conversation as Angie Hanson shares her resilience, passion, and commitment to transforming the way we talk about grief.

Susan, your host, first wants the listeners to know that in this conversation, she's discussing the topic of suicide, which might be sensitive or upsetting for some of you. Be prepared for a respectful and authentic conversation.
Susan welcomes Alexandra Wyman. Alexandra is an advocate and public speaker for resources in the aftermath of suicide. After she lost her husband to suicide in August 2020, Alexandra found a need to change the language around suicide and decided to write about it. Her memoir, The Suicide Club: What To Do When Someone You Love Chooses Death, is an Amazon best seller. She has spoken at a variety of conferences, including the 2023 Northwest Conference on Childhood Grief and the 2023 Military Social Work & Behavioral Health Conference, and has been accepted to present at the International Association of Suicide Prevention Conference 2023 in Piran, Slovenia. Alexandra is the host of The Widows Club podcast. She practices pediatric occupational therapy and lives in Colorado with her son.
Key Takeaways:
Alexandra shares her grief story of when she lost her husband to suicide.
Grief is overwhelming; it comes in waves.
The individual experience of grief is unique.
Susan and Alexandra share how impactful it was for them when people took objects that belonged to their loved ones who passed away.
People tend to think that what happened to you would never happen to them, and in the way of protecting themselves, they end up asking questions that end up shaming and blaming the grieving person.
Not all people who died to suicide had a diagnosis.
Alexandra learned to have compassion for her husband, who chose suicide; in her opinion, it takes a lot of courage to decide to end your own life to end an excruciating pain.
Grief is an inward journey, a path of you learning about yourself and becoming a better version of yourself.
Practice compassion and love for yourself.
There are different types of grief.
Be unapologetic about your boundaries!
No matter who that person is, if someone is not honoring your grief, set boundaries to protect your healing process.
You are more than your grief.
Alexandra talks about The Widows Club.
Remember, it is possible to get to a place of joy again.
The grief will be with you for the rest of your life but will change over time.
YOU CAN DO THIS! You are not alone; seek those moments of joy.

In this raw and vulnerable solo episode, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who've taken the time to share those heartwarming, positive reviews about my show. Today, I would like to share with you my ongoing journey with grief, even after nearly six long years since a profound loss. It's a journey filled with struggle, one that I'm sure many of you can empathize with. But amidst this journey, two of the most challenging aspects have been betrayals by those I love and the need to convey and justify my grief and sorrow to others. It's not always easy for people to truly grasp the profound and pervasive nature of this emotional pain.
As I reflect on my personal journey through grief, it's been a myriad of emotions that have swept me from anger to resentment and back again. There have been moments when these turbulent feelings strained the bonds with those whom I once felt closest to and who I most needed to support me. Even though relationships were lost and I humbly removed some people from my life, what I've come to cherish above all else is the immeasurable value of understanding and compassion from the beautiful souls in our lives as we navigate the unique pathways of our grief. So, my friends, I want to emphasize that grief isn't a fleeting visitor; it's a lifelong companion. It's absolutely okay to still carry the weight of this sorrow many years after the initial loss. In this ongoing journey, self-compassion and the warm embrace of supportive relationships are like beacons in the darkest night, guiding us through the rough waters.
Once again, from the very depths of my heart, thank you for being an integral part of my podcast community and for your unwavering, soul-nourishing support.
