We now enter the season of Lent, leading up to Easter on April 9. Every year it offers us the chance to reflect on the incredible sacrifice that our savior made by dying for our sins and saving our souls. We want to look at our own lives and how we can express a deep sense of gratitude and connectedness to God. So on this first Sunday of Lent we will reflect on God’s goodness and continue with our series MODERN PROBLEMS, ANCIENT SOLUTIONS, which deals with the difficult emotions that we face throughout our lives.

Hey family,

Last week was a very emotional service. We started to examine times when we’ve been hurt, places where we feel justified to feel real bitterness and rage due to the harsh things that have been done to us – perhaps in the past, maybe even now in the present. As we looked at this, we saw that the religious response of stuffing down our feelings with platitudes that are hollow in the midst of tears is not helpful. Neither is exploding and releasing all our anger on the institutions, individuals, or systems that have harmed us. This week we’re going to take another deep dive into anger and discover how the scriptures can help us not only heal, but even use anger as a tool to grow in peace and trust in the Lord.

We’ve started this series, MODERN PROBLEMS, ANCIENT SOLUTIONS, with the idea that you and I face difficult emotions that result in insecurity, fear, and lives that are spent making the same mistakes over and over again. In the last two weeks we’ve discussed what shame is, how it affects us, and how we can combat it.

What’s the thing that we all go through, never talk about, never want to expose to anyone, and when we see it in others, we wince. It’s shame. Shame is universal. Everybody experiences it, but nobody wants to talk about it, because… it’s so shameful.

This week in our new series—Modern Problems, Ancient Solutions: How the Gospels Heal Our Emotions—we're going to take a deep dive on shame. Bring it up, look at it for what it is, and see how the gospels can address and heal some of our darkest secrets, deepest hurts, and even a whole identity that is not in line with the gospel. This is so important, because shame has an effect on our romantic relationships, our interactions with our children, our work, how we view ourselves, the scripts that often go unnoticed and yet are very real in our minds… it literally affects every area of our lives. In this brand-new series, we’re going to dive into the deep pool of asking the question: How can the gospel heal our broken hearts and deal with our problem emotions? This is a series that will change your marriage, your relationships, your family dynamics and even your view of life. Hey family,

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.... For some, Christmas is the season of beauty, good will, and joy. But for others of us, it's a reminder of loss and pain and suffering. God is not unfamiliar with this. Christ was born during a time of loss and struggle for the Jewish people. God chose that hour to show that He is in control of every circumstance in life, even our most painful and difficult moments. And not only is God in control, but he is actively for us, and with us, and loving us.
