Bayden Barber - a Hastings District Councillor - has unseated long time chair of iwi - Ngāti Kahungunu.

Ngahiwi Tomoana has held the seat for 26 years - and after a campaign by opposition Barber.

In a statement Mr Tomoana says e pari te tai, e timu te tai, e ngunguru nei te moana, kua huri te tai! - meaning The time and tide waits for no man, and the tide has turned. 

He said he would support the new chair.
