Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei vows their battle with the crown to be recognised as sole mana whenua in parts of Tamaki Makaurau will continue.

The High Court has declined to recognise that Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei have exclusive mana whenua rights in Auckland region.

Justice Palmer ruled Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has mana whenua in accordance with their own tikanga - but their tikanga did not extend to other iwi in the region seeking rights of recognition.
