Dear Friends
In the space of recording this podcast with Lynn Taylor, one of the founders of community growing in Nottingham and a font of local food system knowledge, we have emerged out of our cosy chrysalis blinking into the light of a new reality.
Have a listen to Lynn, her gentle voice and wisdom about community will soothe you. Please have listen to the back catalogue - so many interesting people, so many food heroes who will give you hope. We need to massively ramp up food growing and social eating spaces - there is a glorious necklace of community gardens - and a farm - across the city but we need to not only expand these important gathering and teaching spaces but to revalue available land and get growing at scale.
We are trying to work out how to do podcasts in social isolation - we will have a test run and hopefully will resume weekly broadcasts then!
With love
Penney and Shona
Hello and welcome to our weekly NGFP Local Lunch podcast trailer where we provide you, our lovely listeners with everything you need to know about Nottingham’s local food heroes and how you can get more involved in our vibrant local food scene!
Local lunch is brought to you by me Shona Munro and me Penney Poyzer of Nottingham Good Food Partnership the go to organisation for sustainable food in our fair city.
This week our guest is Lynn Taylor. We have both known Lynn for many years and her knowledge of the local food growing scene is un-paralled - and she knows everyone! Lynn is a highly respected community co-ordinator who has worked with a broad spectrum of communities across the city including Asian women, the Vietnamese community and the long established Polish community to name just a few.
Very early on in her career she realised that to draw people together you had to be in the heart of those communities and that by offering good food , you can build relationships and then the work flows from there - it's all about trust.
We will hear from Lynn about why food has been at the heart of her work and learn about her long relationship with St Ann’s allotments, Social Farms and Gardens and how so much of her work has enabled the network of community gardens to bloom and expand around the city.
This network is known as the Nottingham Growing Network which Lynn coordinates, has grown to 24 organisations all of which are building social and natural capacity for the communities in which they flourish. It is going to be a fascinating programme and we very much look forward to introducing Lynn to you.

NGFP LOCAL LUNCH Friday 14 February
Bulwell Forest Garden
Hello and welcome to our weekly NGFP Local Lunch podcast where we provide you, our lovely listeners with everything you need to know about Nottingham’s local food heroes and how you can get more involved in our vibrant local food scene!
Local lunch is brought to you by me Shona Munro and me Penney Poyzer of Nottingham Good Food Partnership the go to organisation for sustainable food in our fair city.
This week we are on location at Bulwell Forest Garden which opened its gates to the public in 2012. We will meet Barbara Bates the founder, Adele who is one of the growers and Rezi who is cooking here today. We will also have a chat with local people who use the space to find out why it is so important to them. What a lovely space, every space needs a BFG imagine if Nottingham had this in every ward… we have a wonderful network of community gardens but we need even more. They provide such a wealth of services which make an enormous impact on the local community.
Our visit was AMAZING! We love BFG and the people so much. It is a huge space of 2.5 acres slap dab in the middle of a housing estate. Now it was a bit windy so there are a couple of bits where our words are blown away!
It is a really special space and a really enjoyable podcast!
Listen out for our podcast trailer for next week’s episode which will feature John Morgan who is managing director of Leonards Design, an international architectural practice based in Nottingham. John will be telling us about the Leonard’s green team and why he thinks food growing and access to nature should be part of design.

This week we will be on location again! We will be off to the magical Bulwell Forest Garden which opened its gates to the public in 2012. We will meet Babs the founder and Jo who is main grower. We will also have a chat with local people who use the space to find out why it is so important to them.
Bulwell Forest Garden is open 4 days a week, with volunteering opportunities in gardening and wildlife conservation (or just as a lovely space to come and hang out!). Health and wellbeing is the heart of everything they do at BFG, including weekly yoga sessions during the summer.
The primary aim of BFG is to grow fruit and vegetables together as a community, and share it out. BFG provide regular family workshops during school holidays, offering environmental crafts, gardening and healthy cooking workshops, and adult learning courses spread out throughout the year. Check our events page for more info.
You can also sample their produce at a weekly Lunch Club during the summer, where BFG cook a 2 course vegetarian meal with freshly picked produce.

Luisa’s chocolates, sneinton market
Hello and welcome to our weekly NGFP Local Lunch podcast trailer where we provide you, our lovely listeners everything you need to know about Nottingham’s local food heroes and how you can get more involved in our vibrant local food scene!
Local lunch is brought to you by me Shona Munro and me Penney Poyzer of Nottingham Good Food Partnership the go to organisation for sustainable food in our fair city.
This week NGFP Local Lunch goes on location! When we go to visit Luisa’s Vegan Chocolates at her fascinating retail and production space in Sneinton Market.
Luisa is a gold medal award winning chocolatier. We will be seeing how they make their bean to bar chocolate and hearing about her personal relationships with her suppliers many of whom are female farmers - in Colombia! There are some tragic tales of the day to day dangers facing many small scale producers which will put into sharp perspective the pain that goes with the pleasure of the world’s favourite confection. That’s why consumers like us making an ethical choice really does make a difference to the producer.
We will also talk to Luisa about the on-going research project with the Future Food Beacon at the University of Nottingham.
So tune in this Friday at 1.30pm to NGFP Local Lunch simply search on your browser - and if you miss us live - remember you can always listen again to this episode and all previous shows.

Today is a big day for NGFP as it marks the launch of the Wellbeing Design Guide which we have been co-authoring with our guest today.
But first Lunch! Today we will be chatting over a butternut squash risotto topped with slow cooked onions flavoured with lemon thyme straight from the gardens at NGFP HQ! It is cheap, tasty and filling and perfect for a blustery day.
Our guest this week is a true pioneer and urban planning maverick! She is Dr Laura Alvarez who is senior principal, urban design and conservation officer for Nottingham City Council. Laura is the East Midlands Convenor for the Urban Design Group and was amongst the first recognised urban design practitioners in the UK. She is currently a Senior Principal Urban Design and Conservation Officer at Nottingham City Council, where she is developing the Design Quality Framework for the City, which includes bringing together various partnerships to co-create the design guides and establishing changes to planning and engagement processes for the city. She had an active role in launching and co-running the Urban Room where she acts as Lead Curator. And that is just the tip of the iceberg! She is also a published critic and contributor to national publications, TV and radio!
Laura is from the beautiful city of La Plata, Argentina which had a profound influence on her work as an urban planner and architect.
Next week our format changes slightly when we will be recording the podcast at Luisa’s Vegan Chocolates in Sneinton Market. Luisa is a gold medal chocolatier.
