The Appalachian Basin is entering a pivotal new phase driven by power generation demands — including from data centers for artificial intelligence. The call on natural gas is surging and generating growth for the region for the first time in years. At the same time, however, infrastructure bottlenecks continue to create regional basis discounts and are preventing abundant natural gas from reaching the Northeast and reducing volatile prices there.
In this episode of Hub & Flow, NGI’s Jamison Cocklin and Christopher Lenton sit down with Jim Welty, President of the Marcellus Shale Coalition, to break down the key priorities, challenges and opportunities shaping the Marcellus and Utica shales. From addressing pipeline constraints and long-haul transport to examining the potential for regional data center development and local LNG export facilities, the conversation highlights what lies ahead for Appalachian energy dominance.

Appalachian Natural Gas at a Crossroads: Data Centers, Pipelines and Power

NGI’s Leticia Gonzales, managing director of North American natural gas pricing, is joined by Dave Marchese, CEO of Caliche Development Partners, to discuss the optimism and opportunities for natural gas storage development.
Several storage expansions are underway in the Lower 48, particularly along the Gulf Coast. A greenfield project also has received federal approval in recent days. But financing has been a struggle for some projects, preventing them from being sanctioned and ultimately, brought into the market in a timely manner.
Gonzales and Marchese discuss the challenges and successes Caliche has found in expanding its assets in Texas and California, as well as the outlook for future storage developments to accommodate rising natural gas demand.
