  • Health conversations: Rising number of illegal abortions

The National Health Department is concerned about the rising number of illegal abortions in the country. This is despite the existence of 346 public health facilities authorised to perform legal and safe abortions.

These facilities conducted 11 621 abortions on adolescents during the 2021/22 financial year.

They also terminated another 73 426 pregnancies on young women, from 20 years and above. The National Health Department says many women, who opt for illegal abortions claim that the reception at public health facilities is unwelcoming.

Deputy Health Minister Sibongiseni Dlomo says there is still a lot of stigmatisation around abortion, and a lot still needs to be done.

  • Tech and Environmental conversations: Electricity tariff hike another blow to Agri sector facing increased tax and wage bills

Agri SA is concerned that the decision of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to grant Eskom a 9.61% increase in the electricity tariff will place even more strain on an agricultural sector that is already under pressure. The new tariff will take effect on 1 April 2022.

The increase comes just one day after the Budget Speech in which Minister Godongwana announced an increase in a variety of taxes and excise such as the Health Promotion Levy that negatively affect specific commodity producers. Cumulatively, these increases can only hamper the ability of the sector to recover from the shocks of the past two years.

  • Closet conversations: Is your bad self-esteem ruining your sex life?

Men and women alike can sometimes suffer from a negative body image. It messes with our heads, and it messes around with us in bed. The way we see our bodies can have a negative impact on our feelings of sexual desire and enjoyment. We’re impacted by what we think of ourselves, and by what we assume our partners think of our bodies.

What is Organizational Culture and how does it affects Profitability and Service Delivery …

A great organizational culture is the key to developing the traits necessary for business success. And you’ll see its effects in your bottom line: companies with healthy cultures are 1.5 times more likely to experience revenue growth of 15 percent or more over three years and 2.5 times more likely to experience significant stock growth over the same period. Despite this, only 31 percent of HR leaders believe their organizations have the culture they need to drive future business, and getting there is no easy task — 85 percent of organizations fail in transforming their cultures.

This is a comprehensive guide to making culture a major strength of your organization, from what culture is and why it’s important to a roadmap you can follow to create a culture that delivers results time after time.

  • Closet conversations: the phenomenon of Intimate Partner Violence that is so pervasive in South Africa.

Intimate partner violence is one of the most common forms of violence against women and includes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse and controlling behaviours by an intimate partner. Intimate partner violence1 (IPV) occurs in all settings and among all socioeconomic, religious and cultural groups. The overwhelming global burden of IPV is borne by women. Although women can be violent in relationships with men, often in self-defence, and violence sometimes occurs in same-sex partnerships, the most common perpetrators of violence against women are male intimate partners or ex-partners (1). By contrast, men are far more likely to experience violent acts by strangers or acquaintances than by someone close to them (2).

  • Legal conversations: Resigning to avoid disciplinary action? Think again.

Many employees try to avoid their fate of dismissal by resigning with immediate effect. The question whether an employer can discipline an employee who it is alleged has committed a serious offence, when faced with a resignation with immediate effect by such employee, has been one that the Labour Court has been grappling with for years. This uncertainty has made it difficult to advise employers whether they can proceed with a disciplinary enquiry, which may lead to the dismissal of the employee who has resigned.

  • Social conversations: the current standoff between Russia and Ukraine

What does the current Russia –Ukraine crisis mean for South Africa?

Any country that ignores the current stand-off between Russia and Ukraine will be doing so at its own peril.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Boris Johnson, was perhaps correct when he said “Russia has plans for the biggest war since 1945”. He therefore wants people to understand the “sheer costs in human life”.

Indeed, the entire world will be impacted should the world superpowers go to war.

Russia has continually said it does not intend to invade Ukraine, or parts of Ukraine to be precise. It insists that amassing of hundreds of thousands of troops in the eastern boarder of Ukraine is part of its military drill taking place inside its territory.
